The verdict

Ischgl is a high-altitude, lift-linked ski area in Tyrol's Paznaun valley that crosses the border into Samnaun, Switzerland, on the same ticket. The operator markets 239 km of piste across the whole cross-border area; our own routing measurement of the connected network finds about 153 km, still a large run of contiguous piste by Alpine standards. Terrain is heavily red and black, only a fifth is graded easy, and the resort's other reputation, for expensive tickets and loud apres-ski, is as well documented as its skiing.123

Goes well for

  • Confident intermediates and advanced skiers: 140 km is graded red and a further 47 km black, at a measured 22% average gradient across the whole network
  • Skiers who want a genuine cross-border day: pistes run directly from Ischgl into duty-free Samnaun, Switzerland, on the same ticket
  • Anyone who wants the apres-ski scene as much as the skiing: season-opening and season-closing concerts at Idalp and a cluster of well-known bars are as central to Ischgl's identity as its terrain

Goes badly for

  • Absolute beginners: only 47 km of the marketed 239 km is graded easy, and our own measurement finds just 25% of the network reachable without leaving an easy run
  • Budget trips: an adult day ticket was 83 EUR for winter 2026/27, among the higher prices in the Alps
  • Anyone taking the marketed 239 km at face value: our own routing measurement of the connected network finds about 153 km, closer to two-thirds of that figure

Key facts

The operator's own 'at a glance' summary gives the resort's altitude range as 1,377–2,872 m. The Silvrettabahn, the main valley lift out of Ischgl village, has its own valley station lower down at 1,360 m per the operator's technical specifications for that lift; the summit is Greitspitze, marked directly on the current piste map at the Austria–Switzerland border.

Marketed vs measuredSilvrettaseilbahn AG markets 239 km of piste for the combined Ischgl/Samnaun area: 47 km easy, 140 km intermediate and 47 km difficult, which sums to 234 km; the remaining 5 km covers the operator's own separately listed race, mogul and steep 'special slopes'. Skiresort.com's independent measurement puts the difficult share slightly higher, at 52 km. Our own routing graph finds one dominant connected component covering effectively the whole resort, 152.9 km of piste and 116.8 km of lift line, plus a separate, unconnected half-kilometre fragment elsewhere in the OpenStreetMap data too small to count as a second sector; this is genuinely one connected ski area, not a ticket union of separate hills. Silvrettaseilbahn AG states that its 239 km figure comes from GPS-assisted surveying, measured in two dimensions without height correction and externally audited by AVT-ZT-GmbH; it does not say how that method compares with a map-based measurement, so the page does not attribute the gap to any one cause.

Lifts 46 0 types in the fleet

Silvrettaseilbahn AG counts 46 lifts and cable cars across the combined Ischgl/Samnaun area, with a stated uphill capacity of about 97,000 people per hour; skiresort.com counts 45, most likely a definitional difference rather than a closed lift. The operator's own site does not publish a category breakdown. Named lifts include the tricable Piz-Val-Gronda-Bahn serving the resort's main freeride sector and the Twinliner, a double-deck cable car that carries skiers across the border into Samnaun.1

Winter 2026/27 window prices for a one-day ticket covering Ischgl/Samnaun. There is no separate youth tier: only adult, senior (identical to adult on a one-day ticket) and 'Kid'. A ticket of two days or more is instead sold as the wider Silvretta Skipass, which also covers Galtür, Kappl and See on the same card, a regional ticket bundle rather than extra terrain inside this connected area. A cheaper VIP Skipass tier applies to multi-day tickets bought with an Ischgl/Mathon or Samnaun guest card. The Swiss-side operator, Bergbahnen Samnaun AG, publishes its own price list in Swiss francs on its own schedule rather than mirroring the Austrian euro figure directly; its one-day adult price for the same winter is CHF 82, close to parity with the Austrian side but a separately set, separately published number.

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 14 September 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.31

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

The connected network splits into two linked halves either side of the Austria–Switzerland border: Ischgl's own slopes above the Paznaun valley, and Samnaun's smaller Swiss sector reached by the Alp Trida and Viderjoch lifts or the Twinliner cable car. Three lifts leave the Ischgl valley floor, and Idalp, at 2,320 m, is the hub where most of the network converges.

Three lifts up, one hub at Idalp

Silvrettabahn, Pardatschgratbahn and Fimbabahn each leave a different point in Ischgl village and climb to a shared shelf around Idalp, at 2,320 m, where most of the network's lifts meet. Idalp sits on the flatter, sunnier upper mountain rather than in the village, so every day here starts with a ride on one of those three lifts rather than skiing straight out of a hotel door.15

Mostly red, with a genuine black core

The operator lists 47 km of easy, 140 km of intermediate and 47 km of difficult piste inside the marketed 239 km, so well over half the network is red. The steepest marked run drops from the summit at Greitspitze (2,872 m) to the valley station of the Lange Wandbahn at up to 70% gradient, covering 1.8 km and 633 m of vertical. The Piz-Val-Gronda-Bahn, a cableway that opened on 20 December 2013 above the Gampenalpe, added freeride terrain in the Fimbatal after a construction project contested for years over the high-alpine terrain it crosses.16

Limited easy terrain, and it isn't at the valley floor

Only 47 km of the marketed 239 km is graded easy, and our own routing measurement of the connected network finds just 25% of piste reachable from the base without ever dropping onto something harder than a blue run. Idalp and the upper Samnaun sector around Alp Trida and Alp Bella carry most of that easier terrain; the valley runs back down into Ischgl are graded red and, by several forum accounts, get congested with a mix of fast skiers, tired beginners and après-affected traffic by mid-afternoon.13789

Snow and aspect

Our measurement finds 45% of the piste network facing north, northeast or northwest, and 30% of it above 2,500 m, with a median piste altitude of 2,374 m, well above most Tyrolean resorts. The length-weighted average gradient across the whole network is 22%. There is no glacier, so the top of the season still depends on the winter's own snowfall rather than a guaranteed high-altitude reserve.3

A resort as well known for its nights as its runs

Ischgl markets itself on nightlife as directly as on skiing: the season traditionally opens and closes with a free outdoor concert at Idalp, and its apres-ski bars, Kitzloch among them, are a fixture of German and Austrian ski media. That reputation turned into something else in March 2020, when the Kitzloch bar was identified as an early European COVID-19 transmission hotspot and the village was placed under quarantine. The skiing itself was not the story that spring, but the episode is now part of how the resort is known.10

Crossing into Samnaun

Pistes run directly across the Austria–Switzerland border into Samnaun, a duty-free zone, and back on the same ticket. Community reports describe the return crossing as weather-dependent: the Palinkopf and connecting lifts close in high wind, and a skier caught on the Swiss side after the last lift faces a road detour of several hours around the mountain rather than a short walk back. Checking that day's posted return time, not the resort's general closing time, is the advice that recurs across the forums.1112

SkierVerdictWhy
Improving intermediate excellent 140 km of red piste, more than half the marketed network, at a measured 22% average gradient across the whole area: a large amount of terrain to grow into without needing black runs.13
Apres-ski and nightlife excellent Ischgl markets its nightlife as directly as its skiing, with a free season-opening and season-closing concert at Idalp and a cluster of well-known apres-ski bars in the village, the same scene that made the Kitzloch bar an early, widely reported COVID-19 hotspot in March 2020.10
Advanced skier good 47 km of black piste including a run off Greitspitze at up to 70% gradient, and the Piz-Val-Gronda-Bahn opens genuine freeride terrain in the Fimbatal, though on-piste black mileage is modest against the size of the marketed total.61
Freerider good Piz Val Gronda's freeride sector and the area's altitude (a measured 30% of piste above 2,500 m) give real off-piste terrain, though this is a lift-served resort rather than a touring or guiding hub.36
Non-skier / shopping day good Duty-free Samnaun is reachable on the same ticket, and the connected network includes enough flat, sunny cruising around Alp Trida and Alp Bella on the Swiss side for a companion who skis only a little.131
First-timer fair Only 47 km of the marketed 239 km is graded easy, and our own measurement finds just 25% of the network reachable without leaving an easy run. Idalp and the Samnaun side hold most of the beginner terrain; the valley return runs into Ischgl are graded red, not blue.13
Budget skier poor An adult day ticket was 83 EUR for winter 2026/27, among the higher prices in the Alps, and the cheaper VIP tier requires a local guest card most visitors won't hold.4

By train

There is no railway into the Paznaun valley. The nearest station is Landeck-Zams; bus 260 runs from the station forecourt into the valley roughly every 30 minutes, taking about an hour to reach Ischgl. The ride is free with an activated Ischgl, Kappl, Galtür or See guest card.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 14 September 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • If you reach the base after 09:00, walk through the Dorf Tunnel to the Fimbabahn instead of joining the Silvrettabahn queue.161117

Reports repeatedly put the Silvrettabahn wait around 09:00–10:30 at 20–40 minutes while Fimba was usually much quicker; at 08:15–08:40, however, Silvretta waits ranged from zero to about ten minutes.

  • At Idalp first thing, ski past the B2 and B3 queues and start with C3 and the E-sector lifts, working back toward C2 and the border after the rush.18

The obvious lifts directly below the gondola arrivals collect the morning flow even when nearby sectors are quiet.

  • Use the first hour to ski the home runs, especially 7-7a-1a or piste 1, and upload again before they become afternoon traffic funnels.1718

A 2026 visitor repeatedly lapped 7–7a–1a in the morning, while another discussion recommends an immediate first descent for empty pistes and the day's best surface.

  • In late March, ski Samnaun's south-to-southeast-facing runs before lunch and Ischgl's northwest-to-west-facing terrain later.1920

When starting from Samnaun, one regular skied there from 08:30 to 10:00 and moved toward Höllkar as the Ischgl traffic arrived; exposure and snow state can reverse the advantage after fresh snow or a cold snap.

  • If your pass covers the whole Paznaun, consider Galtür or Kappl on Sunday when Ischgl absorbs more day-trippers.2118

Multiple regulars describe Galtür as markedly quieter on Sundays; Kappl can also become busier, but less so than Ischgl.

  • In the Floriangarage, drive into the forward old section and use the stairs emerging near Billa for the shortest practical walk to the Pardatschgratbahn.22

For the Silvrettagarage, forum regulars warn that the entrance is inconspicuous: it is roughly 200 metres before Silvrettaplatz and requires taking the right-hand lane.

  • Do not rely on old posts promising free Ischgl day parking; compare the outdoor and garage tariff because the covered option has sometimes cost only a small premium.2223

A 2022 discussion recorded €5 outdoors versus €7 in a garage, and a 2026 rider still reported €5 at A1; these are historical figures, so verify the current season's tariff.

  • From Landeck, allow roughly 50 minutes by bus versus 30–35 minutes by car when driving early enough for first lift.23

One 2026 rider reported about €10 each way or roughly €30 for a weekly route ticket; treat those prices as trip-specific and check the current timetable and fare.

  • When booking in Kappl, verify the exact address and nearest ski-bus stop rather than trusting the village name.24

Kappl's accommodation is widely scattered, the valley bus does not pass every property, and buses leaving Ischgl can be crowded at closing time; valley-floor lodging was also described as dark, traffic-noisy and diesel-affected in February.

  • Build repeat laps around pistes 4, 5 and 7 using the Velilleckbahn and Pardoramabahn before crossing the busier Idalp core.17

A weeklong 2026 report ranked this combination among the best parts of the area, with 7–7a also providing an alternative approach to the valley runs.

  • Make time for piste 40 under the Gampenbahn, which is unusually long for a high-mountain lap rather than a valley descent.17

It became a repeat favourite in a seven-day report, although access depends on the Höllspitzbahn or Palinkopfbahn operating normally.

  • For quiet cruising, head to the M-lift sector around Alp Trida and Alp Bella and lap piste 76.2319

Both English-language discussions describe this Swiss-side pocket as easier and substantially quieter than Idalp, with piste 76 singled out for its flow.

  • For firm, fast morning skiing, try the black 21 variants near D2 before 10:00–11:00 rather than black 20 or 14A.23

A snowboarder found 21 quiet and grippy while 20 bumped up sooner and 14A was already an ice sheet by 11:00 even after recent snow; this is one trip's condition-dependent comparison, not a safety endorsement for high speed.

  • On a spring freeze-thaw day, leave the true north-facing pistes until they soften and try black 35 at the Höllspitzbahn in the afternoon.25

An April 2025 report found the north-facing runs icy in the morning but rated 35 the best piste later in the day.

  • If staying in Ischgl or Mathon, obtain the guest card before buying and compare the discounted VIP pass with the full Paznaun/Silvretta pass.1711

A January 2026 visitor bought seven VIP days online for €365, but discussions warn that the cheaper Ischgl/Samnaun product does not generally cover Galtür, Kappl and See; prices and eligibility vary by season.

  • For a quick-value mountain lunch, use Slope Food beside piste 38 rather than defaulting to the largest Idalp canteens.17

A January 2026 report called it the resort's price-to-quality winner after paying €16 for a cheeseburger with fries and €5 for a wheat beer; expect seasonal price changes.

  • At Alp Bella, order the repeatedly recommended house-reared grilled chicken rather than assuming every self-service dish is equally good.191117

Regulars praise the chicken specifically, while a January 2026 visitor rated the currywurst and hard fries the weakest and relatively expensive meal of the week.

  • For self-catering, shop at the MPreis just outside See before returning to Ischgl instead of entering Ischgl or Kappl supermarkets immediately after lift closing.24

A family staying in the valley found MPreis cheaper and far less crowded while the resort supermarkets were packed at that hour.

  • Before buying a day ticket, check whether a Top of the Mountain concert is bundled into that date's price.2627

One skier reported being unable to decline a concert ticket and paying about €110 instead of an expected €60; another local discussion says concert days do not necessarily make the pistes worse because many attendees do not ski, so the pricing may matter more than the crowd.

  • Beginners and tired intermediates should download from Idalp or Pardatschgrat instead of treating the Ischgl home runs as obligatory.789

A March 2025 first-timer and a March 2026 solo intermediate both wrote up downloading rather than finishing the valley runs once they turned narrow, icy or moguled near the bottom, and a snowHeads thread comparing St Anton and Ischgl made the same point about the mix of fast skiers and après-affected traffic lower down.

  • Snowboarders should preserve safe momentum before the flat sections on pistes 22, 12, 1 and 80 or expect to skate.23

Piste 1 also forks at several crossings, so slowing to navigate can leave a boarder stranded on the following flat.

  • Do not leave Paznauner Thaya at peak après time expecting piste 37 to be a normal final descent.26

A local-language discussion identified 37 toward the Fimbabahn middle station as the scene of an exceptional crush when an easier neighbouring pitch or E1 was unavailable, with poor visibility, ice, bumps and many impaired or weak skiers.

  • Do not default to piste 3 simply because it leads toward Fimba and Pardatschgrat; test it early and switch to piste 1 or 7a–1a if you dislike it.17

A weeklong 2026 visitor called piste 3 the worst run in the area and stopped using it, although that judgment is explicitly subjective.

  • Do not rely solely on the stylised piste map when crossing this compact but interlinked area; use the Ischgl app's location-enabled map or a topographic map.11

German first-timers repeatedly found the paper plan confusing, while experienced posters recommended the app and OpenSkiMap to understand gradients and actual terrain relationships.

  • When strong wind or delayed avalanche work is forecast, stay on the Austrian side until the Palinkopf and Swiss-link lifts are confirmed open.11

A 2026 local-language warning notes that link closures can strand skiers in Samnaun, where an emergency taxi around the mountains may cost more than a hotel night.

  • In flat light, use the lower wooded Pardatschgrat sector rather than the largely treeless high bowls.289

A German conditions report retained usable visibility there until about 13:00, while broader discussions stress that most Ischgl skiing is above the treeline.

  • If Ischgl is wind-affected, switch to Galtür, Kappl or especially See rather than writing off the day.2930

Visitors report these separate Paznaun areas being much more sheltered and sometimes calm while Ischgl's exposed lifts were curtailed; access requires the pass product covering the wider valley.

  • After rain or a warm spring night, stay high and download rather than committing to a late valley run.318

Reports found excellent snow above 2,200 metres but hard, rattly pistes below after rain, while a March visitor found the valley runs slushy below roughly 1,600 metres.

  • Treat red 80 to Samnaun as a once-per-trip excursion and do it while the snow is cold and fast.2319

The attractive 3–4 kilometre descent ends with a long flat approach; riders report needing a bus because walking to the Ravaisch lifts is impractical, followed by a slow or crowded L1/L2 upload.

  • Research the bus connection before skiing runs 60 or 61 because neither delivers you directly to the Twinliner.1824

Discussion describes a walk to a poorly signposted stop, sometimes down a steep slippery road; the runs themselves are often quiet precisely because many skiers avoid this transfer.

  • Treat the posted Ischgl-return cutoff, not the final resort closing time, as a hard deadline and start back toward Flimsattel well before roughly 16:00.1211

A German trip report used about 16:00 as the relevant last-return time, while newer discussion warns that weather closures can remove the cross-border link unexpectedly; always use that day's displayed operating time.

  • Near Schwarze Wand and Palinkopf, disable automatic roaming or select your network manually if Swiss roaming is not included.32

A season worker noted that phones in the same group can attach to different sides of the border even while everyone remains at the same hut or piste.

Questions

How many piste kilometres does Ischgl have, and how much of it is easy?

Silvrettaseilbahn AG markets 239 km of piste across the connected Ischgl/Samnaun area: 47 km easy, 140 km intermediate and 47 km difficult, surveyed by GPS in two dimensions and audited externally. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap routing network finds about 153 km of piste, roughly two-thirds of the marketed figure.1343

Is Ischgl good for beginners?

Not especially. Only 47 km of the marketed 239 km is graded easy, and our own measurement finds just 25% of the network reachable without leaving an easy run. What beginner terrain exists sits up around Idalp and the Samnaun side rather than at the valley floor, and the runs back down into Ischgl village are graded red.13

How much does a day ticket cost at Ischgl?

An adult day ticket covering Ischgl/Samnaun was 83 EUR for winter 2026/27, with a child ticket at 51 EUR. Tickets of two days or more are instead sold as the wider Silvretta Skipass, which also covers Galtür, Kappl and See on the same card.4

Can you ski from Ischgl into Switzerland?

Yes. Pistes run directly across the border into duty-free Samnaun on the same lift ticket, connected by lifts including the Alp Trida and Viderjoch chairs and the Twinliner double-deck cable car. The crossing is weather-dependent: high wind closes the connecting lifts, and forum reports recommend checking the day's posted return time rather than assuming the resort's general closing hour applies.611

How do you get to Ischgl, and is there a train station?

There is no railway into the Paznaun valley. The nearest station is Landeck-Zams, from where bus 260 runs into the valley roughly every 30 minutes, taking about an hour to reach Ischgl. By car, Ischgl is about 100 km from Innsbruck via the A12 motorway and the B188 into the valley, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes' drive.2

What happened at Ischgl during the COVID-19 pandemic?

In March 2020, the Kitzloch apres-ski bar in Ischgl was identified as one of the early hotspots for COVID-19 transmission in Europe, and the village was placed under quarantine. It remains one of the most documented early spread events of the pandemic, and is now part of the resort's wider reputation alongside its skiing and nightlife.10
