The verdict

Crans-Montana is a sunny, south-facing Valais resort spread across the plateau villages of Crans, Montana and Barzettes, with lifts running from about 1,500 m up to 2,883 m below the Plaine Morte glacier. Vail Resorts bought the lift company in 2024 and the area is now on the Epic Pass. The operator markets 140 km of piste across three sectors, but our own routing graph finds a single connected network of 72.2 km, and Aminona, the resort's third named area, has had no lift up from its own village since 2014.12

Goes well for

  • Intermediates who want wide, sunny, south-facing cruisers rather than steep terrain
  • Families, with dedicated nursery areas at Snow Island (on the golf course) and Snow Garden at Arnouva
  • Epic Pass holders looking for a European stop without blackout dates

Goes badly for

  • Skiers based in Aminona itself: the village lost its uplift in 2014 and still has none
  • Anyone chasing north-facing, shaded snow: our own measurement finds only 4% of the piste network faces north
  • Expert piste skiers: marked black terrain is a modest share of the network outside race season on the Piste Nationale

Key facts

Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.

Elevation 1,372m vertical · 1,511–2,883 m

Lowest piste1,511 m3
Highest lift-served point2,883 m4
Vertical drop1,372 m

The operator's own marketing rounds to "1,500 m to 3,000 m". The precise figures: the Funitel to Plaine Morte tops out at 2,883 m (Remôntees Mécaniques' lift database), matching our own routing graph's highest node (2,872 m) closely; the glacier plateau itself continues a little higher, toward the 2,927 m summit of Pointe de la Plaine Morte, but that ground is beyond the lift station. Vail Resorts describes the resort as having "nearly 4,600 feet (1,400 m)" of vertical, which matches the 1,372 m derived here.

Marketed vs measuredCrans-Montana Tourisme and both independent aggregators we checked (skiresort.info and J2Ski) agree on 140 km, and the operator's own factsheet separately claims a 9% black / 75% red / 12% blue split that would sum to only about 135 km — itself inconsistent with the 15/70/55 km split skiresort.info and J2Ski publish, which we use here as the more internally consistent pair. Set against any of that, our own routing graph finds a single connected component of 72.2 km of piste and 81.3 km including marked ski routes, roughly half the marketed figure. That is a wider shortfall than Zermatt's, where our graph measures 210.4 km against a 360 km marketed figure (about 58%, versus about 52% here). Aminona's own gondola has not run since 2014 (see lifts.note), but the Aminona-area terrain served by the Toula, Tsa and Bellalui lifts is inside our single connected component, so a missing sector does not explain the shortfall on its own; the remainder looks more like thinner OpenStreetMap piste coverage for this resort than a scope difference, and should be treated as an open question rather than a resolved one.

Lifts 24 5 types in the fleet

  • Funicular / cog railway 1

skiresort.info's type breakdown (1 funicular, 4 gondolas, 6 chairlifts, 9 T-bar/platter/button lifts, 4 magic carpets = 24) matches the operator's own count of 24 exactly, and the gondola, chairlift and platter counts each match the named lifts in our own graph. The funicular is the Sierre–Montana valley line (rebuilt 2022), a town-to-plateau connection rather than an on-mountain ski lift. Aminona's own valley gondola was dismantled in 2014 and has not been replaced, so none of the 24 currently lifts skiers out of Aminona village itself; a new Aminona–Colombire–Grangettes gondola has been proposed since 2016 and remains unbuilt.1

Crans-Montana is not car-free. The resort sits on a plateau above Sierre, reached by road via Sierre or, from the east, via Sion; both Crans and Montana have village-centre parking at the lift bases.

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 September 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.57

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

The ski area splits into three linked sectors above the plateau villages: Cry d'Er above Crans, Violettes–Plaine Morte above Montana with the glacier at the top, and the Aminona-area terrain around Toula, Tsa and Bellalui, reached from the other two sectors rather than from Aminona village itself.

For beginners

Two dedicated nursery areas anchor the beginner offer: Snow Island on the golf course in town, with two button lifts and two magic carpets, and Snow Garden at Arnouva, with three magic carpets. From there, the progressive blue pistes named Verdets, Les Planches, Boulevard and Mérignou are built for a first week on skis. Our own measurement finds that only about a tenth of the wider network is reachable without crossing a red, so a near-beginner ready to explore beyond the nursery slopes will end up funnelled onto intermediate terrain sooner than at some other resorts.6

For intermediates

This is the resort's main audience. The marketed split runs heavily toward red terrain, and the pistes are wide, south-facing and groomed for cruising rather than technical skiing. The long run down from the Plaine Morte Funitel toward the valley is the area's longest continuous descent at 8.3 km and 1,361 m of vertical.7

For experts

Marked black terrain is a modest share of the area. The best-known steep ground is the Piste Nationale, a 3.6 km World Cup downhill course dropping from 2,514 m to 1,560 m that has hosted women's races since 1977 and men's since 1979, including the 1987 World Championships and Marco Odermatt's Super-G win in February 2025. It skis as a normal piste outside race weeks, though the resort closes it for World Cup preparation and racing when the calendar requires it.89

Snow reliability

The resort's terrain is overwhelmingly south-facing: our own measurement of piste bearings finds only 4% facing north, well below Zermatt's 45% on the same measure. That is what gives Crans-Montana its sunny reputation, but it also means the lower pistes are the first in the region to suffer in a warm spell. The upper Plaine Morte sector sits below a glacier and holds snow longest.7

SkierVerdictWhy
First-timer excellent Two purpose-built nursery areas with magic carpets, at the golf course in town and at Arnouva.6
Intermediate excellent Wide, sunny, south-facing red cruising is what the resort is built around.1
Families excellent Dedicated children's areas, gentle terrain low on the mountain, and a plateau setting with little elevation to manage.6
Improving beginner fair Once past the nursery slopes, only around a tenth of the network is reachable without crossing a red run.7
Expert on-piste fair Black terrain is a modest share of the marked network outside the Piste Nationale race course.5
Non-skiers fair The Plaine Morte glacier viewpoint and cross-country tracks are reachable by lift, but there is no single landmark comparable to Zermatt's Matterhorn.1

By car

Crans-Montana is not car-free. The resort sits on a plateau above Sierre, reached by road via Sierre or, from the east, via Sion; both Crans and Montana have village-centre parking at the lift bases.

By train

No rail line reaches the plateau directly. Trains on the Simplon line stop at Sierre/Siders, from where the Sierre–Montana funicular — rebuilt with 121-person cars in 2022 — climbs to Montana in about 13 minutes.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 17 September 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • For the earliest start, use Montana–Arnouva when its published opening is earlier than Violettes Express.1213

A holiday-week report found Violettes opening at exactly 08:45 with an immediate 15-minute queue, while the resort's first lifts were already running; check the current timetable before choosing a base.

  • Cross from the Barzettes–Violettes side toward Montana or Crans before the afternoon rush on Nationale Express.1314

Skiers describe Nationale Express as the only lift-assisted return west; its mid-station is a poor shortcut because passengers can board only the occasional completely empty chair.

  • Make Plaine Morte your first objective, or save it for the last safe rotation within the posted closing time.1516

A snowHeads review and a January 2011 German-language trip report both recommend an early start, since the access lifts and the single main descent get busy and scraped; the January 2011 report found the descent quieter near the end of the day.

  • At Montana, get through the gondola before the 10:00 group-lesson wave.13

A New Year family report found the uplift still busy when ski-school groups assembled at 10:00, after an already large morning queue at the base.

  • Check the race calendar before booking because World Cup preparation and racing can remove the Nationale, one of the resort's best pistes and a key connection.9

Regular visitors call its closure a major loss, especially when spring conditions already reduce the useful lower-mountain terrain.

  • Do not rely on Crans-Montana's old reputation for skiing Plaine Morte into May or June when planning a late-season trip.171819

French discussion recalls Kandahar and the glacier tow operating very late in 2022–23, but local and Reddit discussions reported abrupt or early closures during Easter periods in 2018 and 2026 despite good snow, so verify the exact operating calendar before booking.

  • From Sierre, take the funicular to Montana and the free local ski bus rather than driving into the plateau's parking congestion.2016

Trip reports describe only a short bus transfer from the funicular terminus to the bases, while town traffic, scarce spaces and paid lift-station parking repeatedly draw complaints.

  • If driving to Montana, investigate legal spaces on Route de Zoutet or Route de Chorecrans and ski down to the gondola from the piste crossing.20

A 2020-era visitor used this to park free and bypass the normal gondola entrance queue; parking rules can change, so obey current signs rather than assuming the spaces remain unrestricted.

  • Use the Crans gondola base when you value a calmer arrival more than direct access toward Plaine Morte.20

A repeat visitor found Crans generally quieter than Montana, with an outdoor lot and a very small number of unmetered roadside spaces before its entrance.

  • When Montana's lift-side parking is full, use the lower shopping-area or Casino parking and take the escalator beside Mosaic up to the gondola.2013

Reports warn that some small lots accepted only coins, while the Casino garage accepted a full-day stay but added walking time during the morning rush.

  • Prioritise Nationale and Chetseron rather than repeatedly skiing the flatter, busier descent into Montana.16

A detailed trip report rates both among the resort's best pistes, with Chetseron providing steeper pitches and schuss sections while the Montana descent includes traverses and crosses the crowded Signal beginner area.

  • Save the Tsa piste at Petit Bonvin for late afternoon and use upper Toula when you want a short ungroomed mogul challenge.1613

Tsa was reported to retain excellent snow late despite the sunny exposure, while the upper Toula section is much steeper and rougher but is not consistently open.

  • Ski Kandahar from Plaine Morte for its length and setting, not because its black grading promises sustained difficulty.1316

A family trip report says only one section feels genuinely black and that a cut-around bypasses it; other reports likewise describe most of the long summit descent as wide and comparatively easy.

  • On a whiteout or when the upper mountain is closed, move into the lower wooded terrain around Cabane de Bois instead of abandoning the day.219

French visitors reported an excellent full day among the trees while the top stayed shut for avalanche work, and a regular visitor specifically notes that the Cabane de Bois tree zone can hold refreshed powder.

  • Choose the Cry d'Er café and terrace pizza over Arnouva when queues and value matter.13

A family repeatedly used Arnouva for convenience but abandoned it after waiting an hour for two portions of fries; they found better choice and value at Cry d'Er.

  • At Violettes, eat at Cabane des Violettes for atmosphere rather than defaulting to the large self-service restaurant.22

A long-time visitor recommends the cabane over the service-station-style alternative, although the latter's outdoor rotisserie chicken can be worthwhile.

  • Use Pépinet only in settled weather, and use the tiny hut below Toula when a simple raclette-and-wine lunch outweighs comfort.22

The Pépinet terrace below the Violettes gondola has no indoor refuge, while the Toula hut was reported to have neither indoor seating nor toilets; confirm that these older recommendations are still operating.

  • Combine piste 23 toward Aminona with rösti at Auberge du Sex only when you are content to finish by bus.15

A trip report calls its quiet valley view and rösti a highlight, but the descent ends away from the lift system and required the approximately 20-minute-interval bus back.

  • Buy the lift pass online in advance instead of turning up without the app or a booking.2123

A French visitor reported a 58% advance discount one week before skiing, while a spontaneous visitor described being charged substantially more after struggling to find a walk-up sales point; the exact saving varies under dynamic pricing.

  • Do not descend to Aminona expecting a gondola or chair to bring you back into the ski area.12

The former Aminona access gondola was removed, leaving a long, partly flat descent followed by a bus journey; several experienced visitors consider the marked valley run not worth the detour.

  • Do not plan the day from the piste-map kilometre figure alone because the skiable area feels smaller and more repetitive than its broad footprint suggests.1524

The domain is wide at village level but narrows toward Plaine Morte, and its lower gondolas are used repeatedly as ski lifts; multiple visitors found the real touring distance shorter than the map implied.

  • From Kandahar or Toula, carry speed onto piste 18a when returning toward Cabane de Bois and Montana.25

A detailed trip report says this long traverse is compulsory for that westbound return, making it particularly tedious for snowboarders or anyone who stops unnecessarily.

  • Keep the live map open around Cry d'Er and read the piste-edge poles carefully in flat light.1612

One experienced visitor got lost twice among Cry d'Er's many lifts and pistes, while another report calls the resort's signage sparse and describes a scraped bottleneck above the 4a/4b split.

  • Never blindly follow off-piste tracks below Bella Lui or beneath the first Violettes gondola section because cliff bands are difficult to see from above.19

Several French-speaking locals describe being surprised by the same hidden drop below Bella Lui, including one estimated at over ten metres, and warn of similarly deceptive lines beneath the gondola.

  • On a warm clear day, ski the lower south-facing pistes early and move progressively toward Tsa, Violettes and Plaine Morte.26916

The entire area faces broadly south, so lower snow can become spring-like early while the high glacier sector usually remains firmer; in lean conditions the first morning surface can instead be hard or icy.

  • During a foehn event, check each lift separately because the Plaine Morte funitel may run while glacier tows and conventional gondolas stop.2728

One skier found the funitel operating in winds they estimated near 85 km/h, even though the exposed surface lifts and some gondolas were shut; French contributors also identify foehn as a recurring weakness of the resort.

  • In spring, verify that the bottom of the Plaine Morte descent is open before committing to the glacier or an eastward tour.9

Regular visitors say avalanche risk can close the lower section, eliminating the ski descent from Plaine Morte and cutting the normal route across toward the Aminona sector.

Questions

Is Crans-Montana good for beginners?

Yes for a first-timer: Snow Island on the golf course and Snow Garden at Arnouva are purpose-built nursery areas with magic carpets. It is a weaker choice once a beginner is ready to explore, since our own measurement finds only about a tenth of the wider network reachable without crossing a red run.6

Is Crans-Montana on the Epic Pass?

Yes. Vail Resorts bought the lift company (CMA) in 2024, and the full Epic Pass gives unlimited, unrestricted access. Epic Local and the 5-day Epic Adaptive pass give 5 days here; Epic Day Pass holders with All Resorts Access can use any purchased day, subject to peak-date restrictions.234

Can you ski to Aminona?

You can ski down to Aminona village, but not back up: the gondola that used to lift skiers out of Aminona was dismantled in 2014 and has never been replaced. The Aminona-area terrain around Toula, Tsa and Bellalui is still part of the connected ski area, but it is reached from Crans, Montana or Barzettes, not from Aminona itself.32

How much does a Crans-Montana lift pass cost?

MyCMA sells day tickets through a dynamic online pricing tool rather than a fixed table. Skiresort.info's cited main-season rates are around CHF 89 for an adult, CHF 69 for a youth and CHF 50 for a child; check the operator's shop for the exact date.5

How big is the Crans-Montana ski area?

The operator markets 140 km of piste across Crans, Montana, Aminona and the Plaine Morte glacier. Our own routing graph measures a single connected network of 72.2 km, roughly half the marketed figure, a wider shortfall than we find at nearby Zermatt and one we could not fully explain from lift or piste data alone.17

Do you need a car for Crans-Montana?

No. Trains on the Simplon line stop at Sierre, from where a funicular — rebuilt in 2022 — reaches Montana in about 13 minutes. The resort is not car-free, though, and both Crans and Montana also have road access and parking.33
