The verdict

Hochzillertal-Hochfügen is two Zillertal ski areas run as one network: Kaltenbach on the valley floor at 550 m and Hochfügen on the plateau above Fügen at about 1,500 m. The operators market 90.7 to 94 km of piste, served by 37 to 39 lifts up to 2,377 m. Intermediates get the most from it, with 48% of the graded piste red. The weak points are wind closures of the link lifts and crowded Kaltenbach pistes.1234567

Goes well for

  • Confident intermediates who want a lot of red piste: 41.3 km of the 85.6 km graded on the operator's list is red
  • A long first descent: forum posters log roughly 1,850 vertical metres from the Wimbach-Express down to Kaltenbach
  • Epic Pass and Zillertaler Superskipass holders who want a second Zillertal area with a large network

Goes badly for

  • Wind days: forum reports from March 2024 describe the link between Hochzillertal and Hochfügen closing with little warning, and a bus ride out of Hochfügen when it does
  • Weekend crowds at Kaltenbach: forum posters describe dense pistes around the Sonnenjet even when lift queues stay short
  • Treating Spieljoch as part of the area: it is on the same day ticket but linked to Hochfügen only by a ski shuttle bus, so it is not in the figures on this page

Key facts

Hochzillertal lists the Kaltenbach valley station at 550 m, a mountain station at 1,760 m and the Wedelexpress at 2,377 m, which is the highest figure it gives; skiresort.info lists 600 m and 2,378 m. German Wikipedia puts Kaltenbach village at 558 m. Hochfügen's 2022/23 fact sheet quotes 1,500 m for its valley level and 2,499 m for the Marchkopf summit, and the piste map marks Pfaffenbühel at 2,431 m and Rastkogel at 2,762 m. None of those summits is given as a lift station, so the highest lift-served point is taken from the Wedelexpress figure and marked as medium confidence.

Marketed vs measuredThis page covers the Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach and Hochfügen network that the two operators describe as one linked area. Hochzillertal publishes 90.7 km for it: 29.7 km blue, 41.3 km red, 14.6 km black, 3.6 km ski routes and 1.5 km park. The three graded categories alone add to 85.6 km, which is the total Tirol Werbung lists. Hochfügen's own site gives 94 km for the same combined area with a 2.9 km park, but the parts it lists add to 92.9 km, and its 2022/23 fact sheet says 93 km. Skiresort.info counts 89.1 km plus 4.5 km of ski routes with a different split of 38.3 km easy, 37.7 km intermediate and 13.1 km difficult. The operator's breakdown is used here because it comes with a full split. Spieljoch above Fügen shares the day ticket but has no piste link, so its 21.1 km (tirol.tl) is not included. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 75.7 km of marked piste in a single connected network, about 12% less than the operator's 85.6 km of graded piste, which is the usual gap between a centre-line figure at full width and a graph measurement.

Lifts 39 4 types in the fleet
  • T-bar 19
  • Chairlift 11
  • Gondola 6
  • Conveyor belt 3

Hochzillertal's list reads 39 lifts: 6 gondolas, 2 feeder cable cars, a 10-seat gondola at Wimbachkopf, 11 chairlifts, 18 surface lifts and 3 conveyor belts, which adds to more than 39 depending on how the gondolas overlap. The split shown is Tirol Werbung's 2024/25 listing of 6 gondolas, 11 chairlifts, 19 T-bars and 3 conveyor belts, which does add to 39. Hochfügen's 2022/23 sheet counted 36 lifts plus one practice carpet, and skiresort.info counts 38. The difference is mostly a question of whether carpets and practice lifts are counted.1

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.10

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

Hochzillertal above Kaltenbach and Hochfügen above Fügen are run by two companies, sold on one ticket and linked by lift and piste across the col between Wimbachkopf and Marchkopf.

Two operators, one connected network

Bergbahnen Skizentrum Hochzillertal runs the Kaltenbach side and Skiliftgesellschaft Hochfügen GmbH runs Hochfügen. Hochfügen's fact sheet describes its area as linked with Hochzillertal, skiresort.info says the two have been connected for more than 20 years, and German Wikipedia dates the link to December 2004. On the 2026/27 piste map the link crosses the col between Wimbachkopf and Marchkopf, with the Topjet and the Zillertal Shuttle gondola as the lifts and pistes 1, 2 and 3 leading down to Hochfügen's Panorama base. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds the Kaltenbach and Hochfügen sides in one connected network, from 552 m to 2,374 m.103111213

Red piste dominates, with parks at both ends

Of the 85.6 km graded on Hochzillertal's list, 41.3 km (48%) is red, 29.7 km (35%) is blue and 14.6 km (17%) is black, with 3.6 km of ski routes and 1.5 km of park on top. The Betterpark sits below the exit of the Schnee Express chairlift, is 320 m long, has its own lift and runs from easy boxes to an 18 m kicker. Hochfügen's own page lists a FunLine, a SpeedLine, a PhotoPoint and a RacePoint training piste.11415212

Valley runs and a long first descent

Two marked valley runs reach Kaltenbach: the Stephan Eberharter Goldpiste, snowmade and floodlit, and the Aschau ski route, snowmade. An alpinforum.com poster logged about 1,850 vertical metres in 13 minutes from the Wimbach-Express through Neuhütten to Kaltenbach in January 2023 and advised doing it early. A snowHeads poster warned that the narrow wooded finish into Kaltenbach fills with fast traffic late in the day. Our own measurement finds a longest continuous descent of 8.2 km with 1,794 m of vertical, which fits the forum figure.151613

Spieljoch shares the ticket, not the piste

Spieljoch above Fügen is covered by the same day ticket and the Zillertaler Superskipass, but tirol.tl describes a ski shuttle between Spieljoch and Hochfügen and no piste or lift, and the 2026/27 piste map shows only Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach and Hochfügen. Tirol.tl gives Spieljoch 650 to 2,100 m, 21.1 km of piste and 10 lifts, so it is a separate area that this page does not count. An alpinforum.com thread from March 2025 worked through the 2024/25 shuttle times: first bus from Hochfügen to Geols at 13:30, last return at 15:14, leaving about 90 minutes there.4171218

SkierVerdictWhy
Confident intermediate excellent Red piste totals 41.3 km, about half of the graded network, spread over both sides of the link, and the Wimbach-Express to Kaltenbach descent is the long run forum posters recommend.15
Second-week skier good Blue piste totals 29.7 km, and a June 2026 r/skithealps thread says blue-run skiers can reach Hochfügen but need red-run ability to ski back toward Kaltenbach, so a bus or car covers the return.119
Freestyle good The Betterpark has its own lift and lines from beginner boxes to an 18 m XL kicker, and Hochfügen lists a FunLine and SpeedLine.152
Epic Pass holder good The pass gives five consecutive days across the Zillertal's five areas, including Hochfügen-Hochzillertal and Spieljoch, from 1 October 2026 to 15 May 2027, and a keycard has to be collected at a ticket window.2021
First-timer fair 35% of the graded piste is blue and Kaltenbach has a kindergarten at the 1,760 m Mountain View station, but only 32% of the measured network can be reached without leaving easy runs, and an alpinforum.com thread from March 2025 calls the opening pitch of the Sonnenjet piste steep for novices.1221813
Advanced skier fair Black piste totals 14.6 km, 17% of the graded network, and a Reddit thread from April 2023 asking for avalanche-safe off-piste here ended with advice to talk to the resort's freeride hub and probably hire a guide.123

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 17 October 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • Be at the Kaltenbach gondola for 07:30, when the upper lifts are already running and the slopes are empty.628

An alpinforum.com thread from January 2026 reports virtually empty slopes and waits of at most three chairs early in the day, with Sonnenjet and Schnee-Express running before 08:00, although the area filled up later. The operator's first lift time is 07:30.

  • On Saturdays use the 07:30 opening or start in Hochfügen, because Kaltenbach fills from mid-morning.296

A snowHeads post from July 2025 describes coaches from southern Germany filling Kaltenbach on Saturdays. The alpinforum.com thread from January 2026 separates short lift queues from dense traffic on the Sonnenjet piste and its junction.

  • Ski the lower Kristall piste early, because it is the first to soften in sun.6

An alpinforum.com poster in January 2026 describes the lower pitch under the Kristall-Express as one of the first to turn soft or cut up, and suggests moving on to Schnee-Express and Wimbach-Express afterwards.

  • Leave the Topjet until the afternoon crowd at the link has thinned.56

An alpinforum.com thread from January 2023 records the Topjet at 5 to 10 minutes on a busy day while most lifts stayed at 0 to 5 minutes. The January 2026 thread notes that it runs later than many visitors assume, and the closing time should be checked on the day.

  • Expect lift queues to ease from about 12:30 even when the pistes stay busy.186

An alpinforum.com report from March 2025 found lift traffic easing after 12:30, and the January 2026 thread repeatedly distinguishes short lift lines from crowded pistes around the Sonnenjet.

  • In Kaltenbach, drive straight into the parking garage instead of queuing for the outdoor lot.30

An alpinforum.com post from March 2024 says regulars enter the garage directly while most drivers queue below, and that around 08:00 they parked near the pedestrian exit with no longer a walk than from the middle of the surface lot.

  • Driving to Hochfügen avoids the Kaltenbach crush but adds time and needs chains after snow.316

A January 2026 r/Tirol thread has a local warning that the mountain road can be delayed or blocked by avalanche control. The alpinforum.com thread from January 2026 adds a snowy-weekend report that recommended taking the bus to Kaltenbach and skiing across, because the Hochfügen road was chaotic and the return bus took over an hour.

  • From elsewhere in the Zillertal, use the valley train and ski buses.321633

A January 2026 r/snowboarding thread describes half-hourly trains and buses that are free with the pass. Another post puts Kaltenbach station roughly 500 m from the gondola. SnowHeads and CARVING-SKI.de threads (both undated) give the same advice for avoiding parking fights.

  • Ski from the Wimbach-Express past Sonnenjet and down the Neuhütten to Kaltenbach for the longest continuous descent.5

An alpinforum.com poster in January 2023 logged about 1,850 vertical metres in 13 minutes and recommended going in the morning, while the lower valley run is still grippy and less crowded.

  • In warm weather, ski the Kristall sector early and cross to Hochfügen after lunch.3418

Alpinforum.com threads from March 2024 and March 2025 report that the lower Kristall pitch softens first while Hochfügen's mostly north and east pistes hold longer; late-March visitors still found Waidoffen powdery and Neuhütten pleasant on the way back.

  • Lap the Wedelexpress when the main Kaltenbach pistes are busy or soft.185

Alpinforum.com reports from March 2023 and March 2025 describe four consecutive, nearly empty laps there, with the piste still excellent into the afternoon on a windy late-season day.

  • Take the Aschau ski route when it is open, and plan for the bus back to Kaltenbach.3536

A January 2020 r/skiing post and a March 2026 alpinfans.com report call it the better of the two valley descents and often undertracked even when soft. The map marks its last section black. The 2020 post mentions buses every 15 minutes back, which should be checked against the current timetable.

  • Eat at the Firnhütte rather than defaulting to the famous gourmet huts.37638

The operator describes it as a timber hut at the start of the valley run, serving steaks on a 300 degree stone. The alpinforum.com thread from January 2026 praises its prices, food and fast service, and a snowHeads post recommends the steak salad and says the Kristallhütte becomes extremely busy.

  • Try Marendalm for a large, inexpensive lunch.381

A repeat visitor on snowHeads (undated) reported portions big enough that the group ordered less the next day. The operator places the Marendalm at the valley station of the Sonnenjet.

  • On the Hochfügen side, choose the Aar-Wirt at Holzalm for food and value.39

An alpinforum.com hut discussion from March 2019 praised its food, service, wooden interior, terrace and price-to-quality ratio.

  • Do not leave the Stephan Eberharter valley piste for the last run of the day.16

A snowHeads poster who lives near Munich (undated) describes the narrow, tree-lined finish as full of fast, after-ski traffic late in the day and reports two rear-end collisions in his group. Take the gondola down if it is crowded or scraped.

  • Check the way back before taking blue-run skiers across to Hochfügen.19

A June 2026 r/skithealps thread says they can reach Hochfügen on blue terrain and download there, but skiing back toward Kaltenbach needs red-run ability, so otherwise a bus or car is needed.

  • Do not plan a same-day Hochfügen and Spieljoch circuit around the shuttle.184

The alpinforum.com thread from March 2025 gives the 2024/25 shuttle times as first bus from Hochfügen to Geols at 13:30 and last return at 15:14, leaving about 90 minutes there and still a lift to regain the Zillertal Shuttle. Regulars advised treating Spieljoch as a separate day or an arrival or departure stop.

  • In early season, check the exact piste section before relying on an open piste number.40

Forum posters in the alpinforum.com thread from December 2025 found apparently impossible combinations because several sections share one number, concluding that a numbered piste can show as open while a connecting section is still closed.

  • Beginners should not make the Sonnenjet piste their first descent.186

Alpinforum.com posters in April 2025 and January 2026 call its opening pitch unexpectedly steep for novices and the piste one of the busiest and most cut-up corridors; broader terrain lies toward Schnee-Express, or take the Mizun side.

  • In directional wind, change sides within Hochfügen before giving up the day.7

A snowHeads trip report from March 2024 had skiers struggling to unload at the Waidoffen chair because wind pushed them back onto it, while the Zillertal Shuttle summit on the other side was completely calm.

  • When föhn is forecast to strengthen, be on your intended valley side before lunch.734

The snowHeads report and an alpinforum.com thread, both from March 2024, describe wind accelerating after 13:00 and connecting lifts closing with almost no warning; on one day the whole area shut by 13:30.

  • If the link closes while you are in Hochfügen, take the bus to Fügen and the Zillertalbahn.734

The same March 2024 reports say this bailout worked more than once, but buses were very full, the trip back toward Mayrhofen was long, and warning of closures was described as unreliable.

  • Treat everything beyond the marked pistes as uncontrolled avalanche terrain and ask at the resort's freeride service or hire a guide.2312

An English-language r/snowboarding discussion from April 2023 asking for avalanche-safe off-piste ended with advice to speak to Hochfügen's freeride hub and probably take a guide, and the piste map marks freeride and LVS checkpoints.

Questions

How many kilometres of piste does Hochzillertal-Hochfügen have?

Hochzillertal publishes 90.7 km for the linked Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach and Hochfügen area: 29.7 km blue, 41.3 km red, 14.6 km black, 3.6 km ski routes and 1.5 km park. Hochfügen's own site gives 94 km and skiresort.info counts 89.1 km plus 4.5 km of ski routes. Spieljoch, which shares the day ticket, is a separate area and is not included in these figures.1234

Is Spieljoch connected to Hochzillertal-Hochfügen by piste?

No piste or lift link is described. Tirol.tl says a ski shuttle connects Spieljoch with Hochfügen, and the 2026/27 piste map shows only Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach and Hochfügen. The day ticket and the Zillertaler Superskipass cover all three areas.41217

How much is a day ticket for Hochzillertal-Hochfügen in 2026/27?

An adult day ticket bought from 07:30 costs 83.00 EUR on Hochzillertal's 2026/27 price list, with 65.50 EUR for youth born 2008 to 2011 and 37.00 EUR for children born 2012 to 2020. Hochfügen's own list shows 82.00 EUR for adults. Tickets bought from 13:50 cost 42.00 EUR for adults.917

When does Hochzillertal-Hochfügen open in winter 2026/27?

Hochzillertal publishes continuous ski operation from 5 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with lifts running from 07:30 to 16:30. Its news item gives the last valley descent as 16:00. Hochfügen's own site gives no dates for 2026/27.281

Is Hochzillertal-Hochfügen good for beginners?

It is workable for beginners, not ideal. About 35% of the graded piste (29.7 km of 85.6 km) is blue, and Kaltenbach has a kindergarten at the 1,760 m Mountain View station. An alpinforum.com thread from March 2025 calls the opening pitch of the Sonnenjet piste steep for novices.12218

Can I use the Epic Pass at Hochzillertal-Hochfügen?

Yes. Epic Pass and Epic Adaptive Pass holders get five consecutive days across the Zillertal's five areas, including Hochfügen-Hochzillertal, from 1 October 2026 to 15 May 2027. A keycard has to be collected at a ticket window with photo ID, and Epic Local and Epic Day Passes are not included.2021

How do you get to Hochzillertal-Hochfügen by train?

Take a train to Jenbach and change to the Zillertalbahn for Ried, Kaltenbach or Aschau. Hochfügen is reached from Fügen by a 12 km road. The Zillertaler Superskipass covers ski buses and the Zillertal trains and buses, without the steam train.411017

Route Hochzillertal-Hochfügen as it skis today

SkiAllDay solves a way across the whole lift and piste network: held to the grade you actually want to ski, around whatever is closed, with the other ways round alongside it. Then it matches your day back to the runs and lifts you took.
