Routable 3D map
The whole lift and piste network of Zillertal Arena is routable in the app: difficulty limits, live lift and piste status, alternative ways to the same place, and a 3D view of the terrain.
Open in SkiAllDayThe verdict
Zillertal Arena links Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Königsleiten and Hochkrimml into one lift-served network across Tyrol and Salzburg, marketed at 150 km of piste against our own measurement of 121 km. Skiing the full Zell-to-Hochkrimml traverse takes about three hours each way. Terrain leans red and intermediate, snowmaking backs pistes to 2,500 m with no glacier, and the network rewards a skier who can already link turns; a first-timer has to search for the beginner terrain, which is scattered across the four bases rather than concentrated at one.123456
Goes well for
- Confident intermediate and advanced skiers who want a big, varied network: skiresort.info measures 88.1 of the marketed 150.1 km as intermediate, and our own measurement finds a 9.6 km, 1,941 m continuous descent from the Übergangsjoch to Zell
- Families, with dedicated children's lifts and terrain at each of the four bases rather than one shared beginner zone
- Skiers who want to cover real ground in a day: the Arena Tour crosses the whole network from Zell to Hochkrimml in about three hours each way, per the operator's own FAQ
Goes badly for
- Beginners: our own routing measurement finds just 7% of the network reachable from the base without ever leaving an easy run, and forum regulars explicitly warn newer skiers off the Zell side, where the reds are described as genuinely steep
- Skiers on a tight budget: an adult day ticket is €82 for 2026/27, and the operator explicitly rejects early-bird or dynamic pricing in favour of one fixed rate all season, so there is no cheaper way to book ahead
- Anyone treating 'Zillertal Arena' and the wider Zillertaler Superskipass as the same thing: the Superskipass adds Mayrhofen, Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch and the Hintertux glacier, reached by road or bus, not by piste from this network
Key facts
Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.
Elevation 1,925m vertical · 575–2,500 m
| Village | 575 m7 |
|---|---|
| Lowest piste | 575 m7 |
| Highest lift-served point | 2,500 m3 |
| Vertical drop | 1,925 m |
The operator's own piste map prints Zell am Ziller, the main base, at 575 m and the Übergangsjoch, the highest lift-served point, at 2,500 m; the operator's FAQ separately confirms the Übergangsjoch figure in running text. Skiresort.info and Wikipedia both round the base to 580 m instead. Our own measurement of the routing graph finds the network spans 572 to 2,501 m, close to both figures. Gerlos sits at 1,246 m, Königsleiten at about 1,600 m and Krimml at about 1,100 m, all per the operator's own village pages and piste map.

- Difficult 12km 8%
Plus 3 km of marked ski routes, which are neither pisted nor patrolled to piste standard.
Marketed vs measuredThe operator's own site markets 150 km of piste. Skiresort.info's more precise figure of 150.1 km splits as 50 km easy, 88.1 km intermediate and 12 km difficult, plus 3 km of ski routes, and matches the operator's day-ticket price list, which cites the same 52-lift, 150 km headline. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 121.1 km of piste, about a fifth less than the marketed figure. The operator does not explain the difference.
Lifts 52 3 types in the fleet
- Chairlift 19
- T-bar 18
- Gondola 15
The operator's own live lift-status page groups its 52 lifts as 15 cableways/gondolas, 19 chairlifts and 18 drag lifts and children's conveyors; Wikipedia's German article lists every lift individually by build year and independently counts 19 chairlifts, matching exactly. Three named crossings stitch the four bases into one network: Zell to Gerlos, Königsleiten to Gerlos, and Königsleiten to Hochkrimml. The Zell-Gerlos link runs on the Wilde Krimml gondola, a 10-person cabin lift opened in 2023 whose name refers to the adjoining Wilde Krimml nature reserve rather than to the village of Hochkrimml. Our own measurement of the network finds a single connected sector across all four villages, not four areas sharing one ticket.1

| Multi-resort passes | The Zillertaler Superskipass, sold from 2 days, covers the whole Zillertal valley: Zillertal Arena plus Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, the Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and the Hintertux glacier (Ski- & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000), a combined 546 km of piste and 180 lifts across four separate ski areas. None of the other three is lift-linked to Zillertal Arena's own network; they are reached by road or the Zillertalbahn train. Mayrhofen has its own page. Zillertal Arena season pass (Zillertal Arena only, not the Superskipass): €940 adult, €750 youth, €420 child for 2026/27. The operator's own site also lists Zillertal Arena on the Epic Pass, alongside the Snow Card Tirol and the SuperSkiCard multi-resort products; none of these carry the discounted pricing of the resort's own day or season tickets. |
2026/27 main-season rate for a full day from 08:00 (Gerlos and Gerlosstein from 08:30, Hochkrimml and Königsleiten from 09:00). Later starts are cheaper: €78.50 adult from 10:30, €63.50 from 12:00, €45 from 13:30. The operator's FAQ explicitly rejects early-bird discounts or dynamic pricing for the whole Zillertal valley, holding one fixed price all season instead, and frames a 55% child discount and 20% youth discount as the family-pricing trade-off. A day ticket can be refunded up to €13 if cancelled before 13:00 on the day.

From the east or from Salzburg, the B168 to Mittersill and the B165 Gerlosstraße over the Gerlospass reach Gerlos, Königsleiten and Hochkrimml directly from the Salzburg side. Community advice suggests drivers coming from Mayrhofen start at Gerlos instead of Zell to avoid the Zell morning rush, at the cost of the extra mountain-road driving.
The mountain
These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 14 September 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.
Piste km per lift km
1.19
Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide
Four villages across two Austrian states feed one connected lift network rather than four separate ski areas sharing a ticket. Zell am Ziller anchors the Tyrol side; Gerlos, Königsleiten and Hochkrimml sit across the Gerlospass in Salzburg's Pinzgau.
Four villages, one connected network
Zillertal Arena links Zell am Ziller and Hainzenberg in Tyrol with Gerlos, Königsleiten and Hochkrimml in Salzburg's Pinzgau through three named crossings on the operator's own live map: Zell to Gerlos, Königsleiten to Gerlos, and Königsleiten to Hochkrimml. The Zell-Gerlos link runs on the Wilde Krimml gondola, a 10-person cabin lift opened in 2023 whose name refers to the adjoining Wilde Krimml nature reserve rather than to the village of Hochkrimml itself. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds a single connected sector across all four villages, not four separate areas stitched together only by a shared ticket.182
Mostly red and blue, with black terrain concentrated near Zell
Skiresort.info measures 150.1 km of piste, split 50 km easy, 88.1 km intermediate and 12 km difficult, plus 3 km of ski routes; our own measurement of the network finds 121.1 km, about a fifth less than the operator's marketed figure, at a length-weighted average gradient of 20%. Forum regulars describe Zell's red runs as genuinely steep rather than the gentle version of red found at some Austrian resorts, and warn beginners away from the valley descent specifically. The resort's longest continuous descent, measured at 9.6 km and 1,941 m of vertical from the Übergangsjoch to Zell, ends on a section some visitors have found icy or heavily cut up by afternoon.4291011
Crossing the whole network takes real time
The operator's own FAQ puts the Arena Tour from Zell am Ziller to Hochkrimml at about three hours with no stops, and says an average skier can ski it there and back in one day. Community trip reports caution against spending a whole day on the traverse itself: one skier needed about 2.5 hours each way and regretted bypassing the terrain in between, concluding the network's linear layout rewards concentrating on either the Zell-Gerlos or the Königsleiten-Hochkrimml end rather than crossing the whole thing. Some of the connecting lifts have had short-notice stoppages serious enough to threaten a return crossing, so forum regulars build contingency time into any afternoon crossing.312111314
Beginner terrain is scarce and scattered
Skiresort.info grades a third of the marketed network, 50 of 150.1 km, as easy, but our own routing measurement finds only 7% of the piste network reachable from the base without ever leaving an easy run. The gap exists because a run can be graded easy without being reachable except by first descending something harder, and the network's easy terrain sits scattered across the four bases rather than joined into one beginner circuit. Forum advice steers first-timers away from Zell specifically and toward Gerlos, Königsleiten and especially Hochkrimml for gentler progression.42910
Snowmaking backs a no-glacier network
There is no glacier, and the highest lift-served point is the Übergangsjoch at 2,500 m. The operator's FAQ describes the season as having 'almost 100% snow guarantee' given pistes reaching that height, backed by technical snowmaking across the network, and markets the 2026/27 season as running from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Our own measurement finds 34% of piste faces north, northeast or northwest, and the median piste sits at 1,873 m. On a whiteout day, local advice steers skiers to the smaller, more sheltered Gerlosstein/Sonnalm sector rather than the exposed main network, which has few tree-lined runs.31521612
| Skier | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Confident intermediate | excellent | The network rewards a skier who can already link turns on red terrain: the Arena Tour crosses all four villages, and the longest continuous descent runs 9.6 km and 1,941 m of vertical from the Übergangsjoch to Zell.32 |
| Second-week skier | good | 88.1 of the marketed 150.1 km is graded intermediate, more than half the network, and forum tips name specific red runs, such as 38/39 between Gerlos and Königsleiten, that hold good snow into the afternoon.412 |
| Family | good | Each of the four bases has its own beginner lifts and children's terrain, including Kinderland at Gerlos, the Märchenwaldlift and Märchenwald Babylift at Königsleiten, and covered conveyor belts in Zell, so a family does not have to travel between sectors to find age-appropriate terrain.1 |
| Advanced skier | fair | Only 12 of the marketed 150.1 km is graded difficult, and the resort is not built around steep or mogul terrain the way some Austrian day resorts are. The Höhenfresser descent to Zell and black run 36 out of Gerlos are the standout challenges named in trip reports, though both are condition-dependent and can turn icy or heavily bumped by afternoon.41112 |
| First-timer | poor | Our own routing measurement finds just 7% of the network reachable from the base without leaving an easy run, and forum regulars explicitly warn beginners off the Zell side, where the reds are described as genuinely steep. Gerlos, Königsleiten and especially Hochkrimml offer gentler terrain, but a first-timer has to seek it out rather than finding it at the main base.2910 |
| Budget skier | poor | An adult day ticket is €82 for 2026/27, and the operator explicitly rejects early-bird or dynamic pricing in favour of one fixed rate all season, so there is no way to book ahead for less. A later start is the main lever: €63.50 from 12:00 or €45 from 13:30.5 |

-
Rosi's Schnitzelhütte
A self-service hut reached via the Karspitzbahn, known for XXL schnitzel and a sun terrace called the Hochleger; repeat visitors treat it as a late-lunch stop rather than an early break.171819
-
Larmachalm
A family-run hut with Tyrolean-style interiors and a fireplace lounge, built around an in-house Hendl-Braterei chicken roastery; the sit-down side is pricier than the adjoining self-service section.2021
-
Gipfeltreffen
A service restaurant and wine lounge at the cable car's summit station, with an international menu; it also has a self-catering room favoured by skiers bringing their own lunch.2223
What skiers say
-
From Zell, board the Karspitzbahn at 08:00, repeat Kapauns three or four times, then continue toward Gerlos before that piste deteriorates.24
A frequent visitor reports that Kapauns is substantially worse in the afternoon, while most other sectors hold up longer.
-
When returning toward Zell, cross Ebenfeld X-Press before 13:30 or after about 15:15, or use Dorfbahn Gerlos instead.2526
Reports describe Ebenfeld as the regular afternoon choke point, particularly around 14:30; many skiers overlook the quieter Dorfbahn alternative.
-
During German or Dutch school holidays, be away from the main teaching areas before roughly 10:00 and expect another surge at the cross-resort lifts late afternoon.2728
Ski-school starts and the return migration to each accommodation sector create the sharpest peaks; queues elsewhere on the mountain often remain much shorter.
-
Use Saturday changeover day for Gerlos, Königsleiten and Gerlosplatte, but still reach the Zell lifts before 08:00 if starting there.252930
Several regulars find the accommodation-heavy eastern sectors quieter on Saturdays, although reports conflict: Zell parking has filled by 08:30 and one exceptional Saturday already had about 100 people waiting at 08:00.
-
For the return from Königsleiten to Zell, either leave around 14:00 or deliberately wait until roughly 15:30 for Krummbach X-Press rather than joining the main wave between those times.3113
One regular accepts the early queues to finish with Zell laps, while another reports less waiting late; the late tactic needs a generous margin because recent Krummbach stoppages have added 15-20 minutes.
-
If the Karspitzbahn car park in Zell is nearly full at 08:10, divert immediately to Rosenalmbahn rather than circulating until it closes at capacity.30
A February report found Karspitzbahn full by 08:30 while the Rosenalmbahn lot was only about half full at 08:10 and its lift was already operating.
-
When approaching from Mayrhofen by car, consider starting at Gerlos instead of Zell to bypass the Zell morning rush.32
A Zillertal local recommends this explicitly, but the extra mountain-road drive is a real trade-off and chains may be required after snowfall.
-
If staying in Gerlos, use the local ski bus for the short trip to Isskogelbahn instead of driving the roughly 800 metres.28
A resort review found that unnecessary hotel-to-lift car trips gridlocked Gerlos around opening and last lift; verify the current stop and timetable with the accommodation.
-
Do not expect to step onto Rosenalmbahn at opening if you still need to buy a ticket in Zell.26
A Christmas/New Year trip report recorded about 15 minutes at the ticket office followed by another 20 minutes at Rosenalmbahn, so collect or load the pass beforehand where possible.
-
At quiet Hochkrimml, lap pistes 1 and 2 at the Handlalm lift for consistently good snow and unusually little traffic.33
A skier familiar with the Arena singled these out as the best-snow, least-used runs in that sector.
-
When the central Gerlos corridors are crowded or soft, move to Gerlosplatte for relaxed carving or Falschbachbahn for the stronger piste.3435
Trip reports repeatedly rate Gerlosplatte and Falschbach among the day's best areas; Falschbach's black run has retained good snow into the afternoon when lower Gerlos was already soft and bumped.
-
Ski black 36 from Gerlos toward Königsleiten early, then take the long red 38/39 back toward Gerlos while it still has firm, grippy snow.12
Black 36 is enjoyable when freshly groomed but becomes a mogulled bottleneck full of overmatched skiers later; the same March report rated 38/39 among the trip's best descents.
-
Only commit to the Höhenfresser descent from Übergangsjoch to Zell when the lower mountain is in good condition.11
The nearly 2,000-metre vertical run is a standout, but its steep final section can be unpleasant when icy, thin or heavily cut up.
-
In Zell, prioritize the upper two-thirds of Sportabfahrt and save red 13 at Karspitz X-Press for late-afternoon laps.3436
German trip reports repeatedly praise Sportabfahrt, while red 13 has remained in excellent condition close to 16:00 even when more obvious runs were scraped.
-
On a whiteout day, abandon the exposed main Arena and ski the small Gerlosstein/Sonnalm sector instead.1612
Local-language advice specifically recommends its more sheltered terrain; a recent English trip report warns that the main Arena has few tree-lined pistes and difficult flat light.
-
For a cheap drink or snack at the Salzburg end, use the Spar supermarket reached by lift at the base of the new Duxer chair.37
A late-season regular found it directly accessible by elevator and used it as a quick refreshment stop while the surrounding slopes were nearly empty.
-
At Larmach-Alm, choose the sit-down side for the roast chicken or the adjoining self-service section when time matters.21
A snowHeads diner called the chicken excellent but found table service pricier and advised actively finding a waiter rather than waiting for a table to appear.
-
Make Rosi's Schnitzelhütte on Sportabfahrt 18 a late lunch rather than sacrificing the best morning piste hours.1819
Repeat visitors describe skiing continuously until roughly 14:40 before eating there, and another regular returned for lunch during a March 2026 Zell session.
-
Bring lunch and use the self-catering room inside Gipfeltreffen at the top of Dorfbahn Königsleiten II.23
A German forum's compiled list places the room directly at this lift station, making it a rare indoor alternative to buying an on-mountain meal.
-
Before buying a separate Wildkogel ticket, check whether your multi-day Zillertal Superskipass already covers it.38
Skiers note that Wildkogel is included and is only about 15 minutes from Krimml, making it a useful second area for guests based at the Pinzgau end.
-
Do not spend your only Arena day racing from Zell to Hochkrimml and back unless the traverse itself is your objective.1211
A competent skier needed about 2.5 hours of steady skiing each way and regretted bypassing much of the good terrain; the resort's linear layout rewards concentrating on Zell-Gerlos or Königsleiten-Hochkrimml.
-
Do not assume every skier must descend black 36 to reach Königsleiten from Gerlos, because Krummbach X-Press accepts downhill passengers.1012
Piste 36 is the only skiable outward route, but intermediates uncomfortable with it can download the chair from its upper station.
-
Do not put tentative beginners on the Zell side merely because the piste map appears predominantly red.910
Regulars describe Zell's reds as genuine reds and explicitly warn beginners away from the valley descent; Gerlos, Königsleiten and especially Hochkrimml offer gentler progression.
-
Do not duck a closure on the Zell valley descent simply because the piste looks groomed from above.39
German reports describe an exceptionally steep, near-bare-ice section where people who removed their skis then slid dangerously; download from a gondola station when it is closed.
-
Do not assume the Gerlos ski bus will still return you to distant accommodation after après-ski.28
One detailed review found the shuttle ending around 17:30 and guests facing a long walk in ski boots; schedules change, so check the last departure before staying for drinks.
-
Build at least 20 minutes of contingency into any afternoon crossing that depends on Krummbach X-Press.13
In January 2025 the lift stopped for more than 15 minutes, and another incident took almost 20 minutes to cover the final 100 metres, nearly causing skiers to miss the Zell connection.
-
Check Fußalm X-Press status before leaving either Gerlos or Königsleiten on a full traverse.14
A January 2026 discussion reported a three-day technical closure with buses shuttling skiers around the broken link and described the lift as overloaded even when operating.
-
Read the live lift status separately from piste 21, because a closed Wilde Krimml descent does not always mean the Zell-Gerlos crossing is closed.3639
Early-season reports describe the gondola carrying the connection while its piste remained shut; the crossing fails only when a required lift such as Kapauns or Wilde Krimml is also unavailable.

Questions
How many piste kilometers does Zillertal Arena have?
The operator markets 150 km of piste, and skiresort.info's more precise figure of 150.1 km splits as 50 km easy, 88.1 km intermediate and 12 km difficult, plus 3 km of ski routes. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 121.1 km, about a fifth less than the marketed figure; the operator does not explain the gap.142
Is Zillertal Arena good for beginners?
Not especially. Skiresort.info grades a third of the marketed network as easy, but our own routing measurement finds only 7% of the piste network reachable from the base without leaving an easy run. Forum regulars specifically warn first-timers away from the Zell side and toward Gerlos, Königsleiten and Hochkrimml instead.42910
How do you get from Zell am Ziller to Hochkrimml, and how long does it take?
The operator's Arena Tour covers the whole network and takes about three hours with no stops; a competent skier can ski it there and back in a day. Community trip reports warn against spending the whole day on the crossing itself, since it bypasses much of the terrain in between, and recommend concentrating on either the Zell-Gerlos or the Königsleiten-Hochkrimml end instead.31211
What does a day ticket at Zillertal Arena cost?
An adult day ticket from 08:00 is €82 for the 2026/27 season, with €65.50 for youth and €37 for children. Later starts are cheaper: €63.50 from 12:00 and €45 from 13:30. The operator explicitly rejects early-bird discounts or dynamic pricing, holding one fixed price for the whole season instead.5
What is the Zillertaler Superskipass, and what does it add to Zillertal Arena?
The Zillertaler Superskipass, sold from 2 days, covers the whole Zillertal valley: Zillertal Arena plus Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, the Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and the Hintertux glacier, a combined 546 km of piste and 180 lifts across four separate ski areas. None of the other three is lift-linked to Zillertal Arena's own network; they are reached by road or the Zillertalbahn train.65
Does Zillertal Arena have a glacier or guaranteed snow?
No, there is no glacier, and the highest lift-served point is the Übergangsjoch at 2,500 m. The operator describes the season as having 'almost 100% snow guarantee' at that height, backed by technical snowmaking across the network, for a 2026/27 season running 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.315
