The verdict

Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is a four-village lift network across Salzburg and Tyrol, joined into one ski area since the TirolS gondola linked Fieberbrunn to the rest in December 2015. The operator markets 270 km of piste (140 km easy, 112 km intermediate, 18 km difficult); our own measurement of the connected network finds 244.6 km. It hosted the 2025 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships on the Zwölferkogel, and its reputation is built on broad, well-groomed cruising terrain rather than steep skiing: only 18 km of the marketed total is graded difficult.12345

Goes well for

  • Intermediate skiers who want distance and variety: broad, well-groomed blue and red runs link four villages, and the Skicircus Challenge circuit covers 65 km and 12,400 vertical metres in one lap
  • Groups mixing abilities, since the Fieberbrunn and Leogang sides give gentler beginner terrain while Saalbach and Hinterglemm carry the resort's few black runs and its apres-ski reputation
  • Snow-sure late-January and February trips: our measurement finds 37% of the network facing north, northeast or northwest, and Fieberbrunn's Hochhörndl-Wildseeloder sector holds a strong freeride reputation independent of the groomed network

Goes badly for

  • Dedicated steep-terrain skiers: only 18 km of the marketed 270 km is graded difficult, one of the lowest black shares among Austria's large circuits, and most of what strong skiers rate highly here is off-piste rather than marked black pistes
  • Budget trips: a peak-season adult day ticket is EUR 82.00, among the pricier tickets in the Alps, with no discounted early or late-season rate close by in price
  • Skiers who want a compact base: the resort spans four villages and multiple valley stations, and getting from St. Anton-style opposite ends of the circuit (Fieberbrunn to Saalbach) needs planning around lift closing times

Key facts

Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.

Vertical drop1,266 m

Skiresort.info gives the ski area's lowest lift-served point as 830 m, close to Fieberbrunn's and Leogang's valley stations rather than to Saalbach itself. The four base villages sit at different heights: Saalbach at 1,003 m, Leogang at 788 m and Fieberbrunn at about 790 m. The top station is the west summit of the Schattberg above Hinterglemm, at 2,096 m; there is no glacier.

Marketed vs measuredThe operator's own figure is 270 km, split 140 km easy, 112 km intermediate and 18 km difficult; skiresort.info rounds the same split slightly differently, to 140/110/20. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network for the connected graph (873 of 886 nodes, one component) finds 244.6 km, about 9% less than the marketed total. A Ski ALPIN CARD extends the total to 408 km and 121 lifts by adding the separately operated Schmittenhoehe (Zell am See) and Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) areas, which are not counted here. The Schmittenhoehe is linked: since December 2019 the zellamseeXpress gondola has climbed to it from Viehhofen, where a piste from the Skicircus ends, and a shuttle bus covers the way back. Kitzsteinhorn does not connect on skis.

The operator's own figure, repeated across its site, is 70 cableways and lifts. German Wikipedia's itemised count, sourced to the individual lift companies, totals 69: 29 gondolas, 22 chairlifts and 18 drag lifts and practice tows; the one-lift gap is not reconciled in either source. Five separate companies run the network: Saalbacher Bergbahnen, Bergbahnen Saalbach Hinterglemm, Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen, Leoganger Bergbahnen and Fieberbrunner Bergbahnen, unified under one lift ticket and piste map.1

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 14 September 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.78

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

Four villages feed one connected lift network: Saalbach and Hinterglemm share the Glemmtal valley floor, Leogang sits over the Asitz ridge to the west, and Fieberbrunn, in Tyrol rather than Salzburg, joined the other three only in December 2015 when the TirolS gondola opened. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network confirms all four sides sit in one connected component, holding 873 of the graph's 886 nodes.

Mostly blue and red, and built for distance

The operator splits its marketed 270 km as 140 km easy, 112 km intermediate and only 18 km difficult, so more than half the network is graded for beginners and improving skiers. Our own measurement of the connected network puts the length-weighted average gradient at 24% and finds 68% of piste reachable from the base without descending anything harder than an easy run, one of the higher shares among the large Austrian circuits.13

A circuit around the whole ski area

The Challenge is a signed circuit around the whole ski area, 65 km long with 12,400 vertical metres of descent, skiable clockwise or anticlockwise and intended to take a fit skier six to seven hours without long stops. Community trip reports describe needing the full window even with only modest queues, and regulars advise against trying to complete it and also fit in repeat laps on the same day.18

Where the black terrain and the racing history sit

The 18 km graded difficult concentrates on the Zwölferkogel above Hinterglemm, where the resort hosted the 2025 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 4 to 16 February 2025 and the 1991 World Championships before that. The Zwölferkogelbahn's mountain station, at 1,984 m, is also where the 12er Treff mountain restaurant sits.549

Fieberbrunn skis differently from the rest

Fieberbrunn's Hochhörndl and Wildseeloder sector carries the network's strongest freeride reputation, distinct from the groomed-cruising character of the Saalbach and Hinterglemm sides. German-language forum regulars name the Hochhörndl access and the traverse from the Henne across Wildseeloder as the terrain behind that reputation, and note that a dry early season can leave it short of cover despite Fieberbrunn's generally snowy record.1011

Snowmaking rather than altitude

There is no glacier and the top lift-served point is only 2,096 m, so the operator relies on snowmaking across all of its main descents rather than height to hold a season from late November to early April. Community reports describe the resort as aspect-sensitive in shoulder season, with south-facing valley runs turning slushy while shaded, higher pistes on the Zwölferkogel or in Fieberbrunn stay skiable later in the day.121314

SkierVerdictWhy
Confident intermediate excellent This is what the resort is built for: 112 km of red plus 140 km of blue, linked into a signed 65 km circuit with 12,400 vertical metres, at a measured 24% average gradient that rewards distance skiing over technical difficulty.13
Apres-ski and nightlife excellent Saalbach and Hinterglemm carry one of the best-known apres-ski reputations in the Alps, with more than 60 mountain huts feeding directly into the village bar scene at the base; Leogang and especially Fieberbrunn are markedly quieter.1
First-timer good 68% of the measured piste network is reachable without leaving easy-graded terrain, one of the higher shares among large Austrian circuits, and the Fieberbrunn and Leogang sides in particular offer gentle, uncrowded progression away from the Saalbach-Hinterglemm valley floor.31
Family with mixed abilities good The gentle circuit sides, dedicated learner areas and the free ski bus linking all the villages make it workable for a family spread across ability levels, though the resort's apres-ski culture in Saalbach and Hinterglemm is more oriented toward adults than very small children.15
Expert / steep-terrain skier fair Only 18 km of the marketed 270 km is graded difficult, one of the lowest black shares among Austria's large circuits, and most groomed black runs sit on the Zwölferkogel alone. Fieberbrunn's Hochhörndl-Wildseeloder sector has a genuine freeride reputation, but that is off-piste terrain requiring a guide, not marked black pistes.110
Budget skier fair A peak-season adult day ticket is EUR 82.00, and even the cheaper winter-start and bonus-season tiers are EUR 74.00, among the pricier tickets in the Alps; the Epic Pass includes 5 days here shared with Schmittenhoehe and Kitzsteinhorn, which is the main way to bring the effective daily cost down.716

By car

The Tauern Autobahn (A10) to the Bischofshofen junction, then the B311 Pinzgau road through Zell am See and Maishofen, is the main route from the east; from the north the A8 Munich-Salzburg autobahn connects via the Lofer road and the Steinpass border crossing. There is no motorway into the valley itself; parking is at village-edge lots and garages by base station.

By train

The nearest railway station is Zell am See, roughly 18 km away, reached from Salzburg or Innsbruck; from there the Postbus line 680 runs to Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Lengau at one-to-two-hour intervals. Fieberbrunn has its own station on the Giselabahn line between Wörgl and Saalfelden, putting it within a couple of stops of Kitzbühel and on a more direct rail connection than the Glemmtal villages.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 14 September 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • Clear the U-Bahn and Reiterkogel base lifts in Hinterglemm, or Schönleiten, Bernkogel and Turmwiese in Saalbach, before ski schools move uphill at roughly 09:25–10:00.1920

Regulars report that these otherwise-efficient lifts briefly become the resort's main choke points; at February peak, Schönleiten around 09:30 can mean 15–20 minutes, so parents should leave immediately after a 09:15 lesson drop-off.

  • When starting in Fieberbrunn, use the early Streuböden uplift and a Lärchfilzen lap before continuing to Reckmoos Nord when it opens around 09:00.21

A successful long-distance itinerary used the staggered openings to avoid waiting and reached an empty Reckmoos Süd; confirm that day's operating times because early-season schedules and lift openings vary.

  • On a Fieberbrunn excursion, reach the TirolS connection by 16:00 and use the downhill gondolas at Reckmoos Süd and TirolS if time or legs are running short.22

The published local itinerary explicitly flags 16:00 as the last TirolS gondola and treats lift-downloading as the sensible escape route for slower groups; verify the current day's last-ride board.

  • Do not assume Saturday changeover day will automatically be quiet throughout the Skicircus.2324

German regulars say Saalbach and Hinterglemm are often quieter before lunch while day visitors load Fieberbrunn and Leogang, but a January 2025 report found Saturday busier than Sunday, so treat this as a tendency rather than a rule.

  • Check the annual Rave on Snow dates before booking or planning a quiet mid-December ski day in Saalbach.25

In December 2025, locals warned that slopes which had been almost empty would become noticeably busier from the festival's Thursday start, although much of the skiing remained usable while attendees stayed near event venues.

  • For a day trip from Maishofen or Zell, favor the large Schönleiten surface lots—or drive through to Hochalm—rather than gambling on a central Saalbach or Hinterglemm space.26

Village-centre lots can fill from lift opening, and discovering that Kohlmais is full can cost about 15 minutes of backtracking; Schönleiten has substantially more capacity, though its gondola then hits the morning ski-school rush.

  • At Fieberbrunn, arrive well before 09:00 on a busy day and allow time to walk from the outer parking areas.25

A German report from 3 January 2026 found the lots almost completely full at 09:00 and noted that the remaining parking was a significant distance from the lift.

  • At Leogang's Steinbergbahn, the first arrivals can park immediately across the ski-bus loop from the escalator, but that convenience depends on being there at or before opening.27

A repeat Fasching-week visitor contrasted this near-door parking with the longer approach from the Asitzbahn lots; later arrivals should not expect the front row.

  • Keep the parking ticket and ask the lift office whether your exact Saalbach or Hinterglemm lot requires validation rather than assuming every garage is free with a ski pass.2628

Reports conflict by facility and year: SnowHeads users describe central parking as free after lift-ticket validation, while German posters distinguish paid underground garages from reimbursed or free lift-side surface spaces and warn about ticket-office closing times.

  • For a car-free trip that may include Kitzbühel, base yourself in Fieberbrunn and use the roughly five-minute local shuttle to the gondola plus the direct railway.29

A recent discussion describes Kitzbühel as two train stops away, making Fieberbrunn much more useful for rail-based side trips than lodging deep inside the Glemmtal.

  • Use upper Bernkogel piste 146 for relaxed carving or learner progression, then download the Bernkogelbahn instead of committing to the steeper, more cut-up lower descent.3031

The upper section is repeatedly described as a broad, gentle plateau, while its lower blue becomes substantially more demanding and the learning area gets churned after lessons finish.

  • From the Asitz top in Leogang, take piste 215 beneath AsitzBräu and turn left to reach the upper Steinberg blue while bypassing its steepest entry pitch.30

The upper Steinberg sector is excellent for improving skiers, but the lower halves of both Leogang valley runs contain steeper passages, so downloading remains sensible for anyone at their limit.

  • When the obvious circuit pistes are crowded, lap the descent from the Sunliner toward Reiterkogelbahn.25

A January 2026 German report called it the day's best piste and, as on previous visits, almost empty even while nearby Fieberbrunn connectors and car parks were busy.

  • Ski the long Viehhofen descent—called piste 68 in older reports and 168 in newer ones—only when the natural-snow route is open, and stop at Hecherhütte before taking the valley bus back.3233

Regulars single it out as one of the area's best long runs and praise Hecherhütte for steaks, goulash soup and apple strudel; the route's dependence on natural snow makes it far less reliable than the piste-map line suggests.

  • In poor visibility, favor the wooded Steinberg valley descent and check whether Fieberbrunn's long tree-lined red 110a is open before crossing over for it.3435

Trip reports find the resort's lower tree-lined terrain navigable in flat light, but 110a is frequently closed because it lacks a dependable base, so confirm it on the live board first.

  • Self-caterers can use the Billa and MPreis in Saalbach without automatically paying a resort premium.33

A resident reported that these chains use normal Austrian pricing, making an extra drive down-valley unnecessary for routine groceries even though a larger shop may still justify it.

  • For a large arrival-day shop, stop at Interspar or Hofer in Saalfelden and refuel at the adjoining Jet rather than relying on Saalbach's BP.36

A 2024/25 thread notes easy multi-storey access at Interspar and says the Jet is usually among the cheapest, whereas Saalbach BP prices can jump sharply, particularly on Saturday and Monday.

  • For Christmas or other peak weeks, eat a snack around 11:00 and take lunch near 14:00; pre-book Hendl Fischerei and Wieseralm, and reach Hendl Fischerei early for rotisserie chicken.37

Current regulars say most huts can squeeze people in outside 12:00–13:30, but the small Hendl Fischerei can fill many times over and Wieseralm is another place worth reserving.

  • For an evening meal used by residents, book Kohlmais Stub'n at weekends; for cheaper informal food, try Schattberg Stub'n or Bobby's rather than defaulting to the conspicuous hotel restaurants.38

The local restaurant roundup identifies Kohlmais Stub'n as the place most likely to be recommended by villagers, Schattberg Stub'n for large reasonably priced portions, and Bobby's for budget pub food; because the roundup dates from 2019, verify current opening days.

  • Around Reiterkogel, choose Wieseralm, Reiteralm or Sonnalm for lunch and avoid Rosswaldhütte at peak time or Walleggalm if you want quiet table service and value.3937

Regulars describe Rosswaldhütte as habitually packed and Walleggalm as louder, self-service and slightly dearer; recent discussion still singles out Wieseralm for some of the mountain's best food.

  • Do not read every blue connector as novice terrain: piste 87 toward Wetterkreuz, piste 2a toward Schönleiten and the lower Bernkogel can all become steep, busy or heavily mogulled late in the day.3140

Use Reiter-Ost or Bernkogelbahn downhill where offered, and ski 2a in the morning rather than discovering its polished final pitch on tired legs.

  • Do not send a weak skier over red 125 merely because it is the signed connection toward Fieberbrunn.31

Recent local guidance calls 125 a genuinely challenging red and also warns about 121 on the Fieberbrunn side; both awkward sections can be bypassed by riding the connecting gondolas.

  • Between Saalbach's Kohlmais and Bernkogel lifts, cut across Turmwiese and use the elevator to street level instead of trudging up Dorfstrasse in ski boots.4126

For the reverse transfer toward Schattberg X-press, descend Bernkogel keeping right and use the tunnel near the bottom; first-time visitors often mistake the town-centre crossing for a long unavoidable walk.

  • Do not interpret the Ski ALPIN CARD map as a continuous piste connection between Zell am See and the Skicircus.4225

The ZellamSeeXpress reaches Viehhofen, but the return toward Saalbach still requires the roughly ten-minute shuttle to Schönleiten; the natural-snow piste into Viehhofen is reported as rarely open.

  • Do not attempt the full Skicircus Challenge merely to tick off the map unless you can start at opening and keep moving for roughly six hours.825

One detailed German trip report needed six hours despite only modest queues, while a 2026 regular noted that trying to cover everything creates needless pressure and prevents worthwhile repeat laps.

  • While descending red 110 in Fieberbrunn, watch closely on the right for Reckmoos Nord and do not overshoot its entrance.22

The turn is easy to miss on a through-skiing day, and missing it disrupts the intended connection across the Fieberbrunn sector.

  • Treat Skicircus as a low-altitude, aspect-sensitive area and check open pistes rather than relying on headline kilometres for early or late-season trips.1343

Recent visitors report that south-facing valley runs can be bare or slushy while high north-facing pistes remain good; January and February usually reduce this risk, but February adds the resort's largest crowds.

  • On warm spring days, ski Reiterkogel and the sunny Saalbach side early, then finish on north-facing Zwölferkogel or in Fieberbrunn.144425

A March 2026 report found the southern pistes softening rapidly into slush while Zwölferkogel held firm later; German March reports similarly favor Schattberg Nord and Reckmoos Nord over Schattberg West or Reckmoos Süd after midday.

  • After overnight snow, inspect grooming before making Lärchfilzkogel-to-Reckmoos your first fast run and switch toward Hasenauer or Leogang if the new layer has not been rolled.25

After about 10 centimetres on 3 January 2026, one local found Fieberbrunn's Lärchfilzkogel and Reckmoos connectors completely chopped while grooming and grip improved from Hasenauer onward and the Asitz valley run remained good.

  • For the resort's serious lift-accessed freeride, concentrate on Fieberbrunn's Hochhörndl–Wildseeloder terrain rather than the groomer-oriented Saalbach sectors.1011

German locals identify the Hochhörndl access and the line from the Henne across Wildseeloder toward Reckmoos Nord's middle station as the terrain behind Fieberbrunn's freeride reputation.

  • Plan a Fieberbrunn powder trip for February or March rather than Christmas if the natural-snow base matters.10

The sector benefits strongly from Northern-Alps storm flow, but a long-time German contributor notes that dry Christmas periods can leave insufficient cover despite Fieberbrunn's snowy reputation.

  • Treat every off-piste turn as uncontrolled terrain, carry full avalanche equipment and book a local guide if you do not know the lines.4546

A January 2026 Saalbach-specific backcountry discussion describes the off-piste as very lift-accessible but still immediately recommends a guide, while another resort discussion stresses that only marked pistes are secured.

  • For tour planning around Saalbach, cross-check Alpenvereinaktiv routes with Skitourenguru and obtain Panico's route GPX where useful before assessing the current avalanche bulletin yourself.47

These were the specific tools recommended in response to a request for an English-language Saalbach touring guidebook; contributors explicitly warn that route scoring is only a filter, not a substitute for field assessment.

The Schmittenhoehe side has been linked since December 2019: a piste runs down from the Skicircus to Viehhofen, where the zellamseeXpress gondola climbs to the Schmittenhoehe, and a shuttle bus bridges the roughly 10-minute way back from Viehhofen to Schoenleiten. Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun is reached by road.

Questions

How big is Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn?

The operator markets 270 km of piste across four connected villages: Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, served by 70 lifts. Our own measurement of the connected OpenStreetMap network, which confirms all four sides form a single connected ski area, finds 244.6 km, about 9% less than the marketed figure. A Ski ALPIN CARD extends the total to 408 km by adding the separately operated Schmittenhoehe and Kitzsteinhorn areas near Zell am See and Kaprun. Since December 2019 the zellamseeXpress gondola has linked the Skicircus to the Schmittenhoehe from Viehhofen; Kitzsteinhorn does not connect on skis.1348

Can you ski from Saalbach to Zell am See?

Yes, in one direction. Piste 168 runs from the Skicircus down to Viehhofen, where the zellamseeXpress gondola has climbed to the Schmittenhoehe above Zell am See since 7 December 2019. The way back is a shuttle bus of about ten minutes from Viehhofen to the Schoenleitenbahn in Saalbach. The piste into Viehhofen relies on natural snow and is often closed, so check it before planning the trip. Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun, the third area on the Ski ALPIN CARD, does not connect and is reached by road.48492533

When did Fieberbrunn become part of the Skicircus?

Fieberbrunn, in Tyrol, joined the Salzburg side of the network on 19 December 2015, when the ten-person TirolS gondola opened from Reckmoos-Süd. Before that, Fieberbrunn's lift company operated separately and Fieberbrunn was sold on its own ticket; the connection created one of Austria's largest single connected ski areas.4

Is Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn good for beginners?

Yes, more than most large Austrian circuits. The operator grades 140 of its marketed 270 km as easy, and our own routing measurement finds 68% of the network reachable from the base without ever descending something harder than an easy run. The Fieberbrunn and Leogang sides in particular give gentler, quieter progression than the busier Saalbach-Hinterglemm valley floor.13

What does a day ticket cost at Saalbach Hinterglemm?

For winter 2026/27, an adult day ticket is EUR 82.00 in peak season (19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027) and EUR 74.00 in the winter-start (27 November-18 December 2026) and bonus-season (13 March-4 April 2027) periods. Adolescents born 2008-2010 and children born 2011-2020 pay reduced rates in each tier. All prices include 10% VAT.7

Is Saalbach Hinterglemm on the Epic Pass or Ikon Pass?

It is on the Epic Pass: Epic Pass and Epic Adaptive Pass holders get 5 days combined across Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, Schmittenhoehe and Kitzsteinhorn, shared across all three rather than 5 days at each. It is not included on the Ikon Pass.16

How much of the terrain is difficult or black-graded?

Only 18 km of the marketed 270 km, concentrated on the Zwölferkogel above Hinterglemm, where the resort hosted the 2025 and 1991 Alpine World Ski Championships. That is one of the lower black shares among Austria's large ski circuits; strong skiers looking for more of a challenge tend toward Fieberbrunn's Hochhörndl-Wildseeloder freeride terrain instead, which is off-piste and not part of the graded network.1510

How do you get to Saalbach Hinterglemm without a car?

The nearest railway station is Zell am See, about 18 km away, connected to Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Lengau by the Postbus line 680 running every one to two hours. Fieberbrunn has its own station on the Giselabahn line and is a more direct rail connection, a couple of stops from Kitzbühel. Salzburg Airport is the closest airport, roughly 1h30 away by road.50
