Open in SkiAllDayThe verdict
Hochkönig is a long, linear ski area in Salzburg with up to 120 km of piste and 34 lifts, strung between Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach at 800 to 1,900 m. The 35 km Königstour crosses all three villages and suits skiers comfortable on reds. The limits are altitude, with no glacier and a full-area season that ends on 29 March, and a box-office day ticket of 81 EUR.12345
Goes well for
- Intermediate skiers who want to cover distance: the Königstour links six peaks over 35 continuous piste kilometres, and the operator asks for confidence on red pistes
- Freestylers and families on one ticket: Kings Park has 1.8 km of snowpark with over 50 jibs and jumps, a separate beginner park sits at Natrun, and children born in 2021 or later ski free with a companion
- Car-free visitors: trains reach Saalfelden and Bischofshofen, with buses on to Maria Alm and Mühlbach, and a free ski bus links Maria Alm and Dienten
Goes badly for
- Late-season skiing: the whole area, including the Königstour, is scheduled to close on 29 March 2027, only the Aberg lift in Maria Alm runs to 4 April, and the highest lift-served point is about 1,900 m
- Price-sensitive skiers: the 2026/27 day ticket is 81 EUR at the box office in the main season, and the discounted online prices of 68.90 EUR and up depend on the date of purchase
- Advanced skiers wanting steep terrain: skiresort.com grades 27 km of the 120 km as difficult, and forum reports recommend leaving the Königstour for the Aberg and Karbach blacks
Key facts
Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.
Elevation 1,100m vertical · 800–1,900 m
| Village | 800 m6 |
|---|---|
| Lowest piste | 800 m5 |
| Highest lift-served point | 1,900 m5 |
| Vertical drop | 1,100 m |
The operator's regional site gives village heights only: Maria Alm at about 800 m, Mühlbach at about 860 m and Dienten at about 1,070 m. The base and top figures come from skiresort.com, which lists 800 m at the valley station and 1,900 m at the mountain station. The operator's own panorama marks Aberg-Langeck at 1,900 m, which agrees, and labels the peaks above the pistes at Schneeberg 1,921 m, Kollmannsegg 1,848 m and Wastlhöhe 1,730 m. Those summits are labelled on the map and are not the lift-served maximum. The Hochkönig massif itself, at 2,941 m on the panorama, is not skied.
Pistes 120km measured, not marketed
- Easy 52km 43%
- Intermediate 41km 34%
- Difficult 27km 23%
Plus 8 km of marked ski routes, which are neither pisted nor patrolled to piste standard.
Marketed vs measuredThe operator markets up to 120 km of piste for the Hochkönig region, and skiresort.com gives the same 120 km, split 52 km easy, 41 km intermediate and 27 km difficult, plus 8 km of ski routes. The Königstour's 35 km is a route over those same pistes and adds nothing to the total. Neither source says what the 120 km covers. The day ticket also includes the small Hochkeil and Hinterreit areas, which the operator's panorama draws apart from the main network, and skiresort.com's 34-lift roster names the two Hinterreit T-bars, so the marketed figures may include ground that the lifts of the main area do not reach. This page treats the linked area from Maria Alm to Mühlbach as the subject and the 120 km as the operator's figure for the region.
Lifts 34 3 types in the fleet
- Drag lift 19
- Chairlift 8
- Gondola 7
The operator counts 34 lifts, and skiresort.com's itemised list reaches 34: 7 gondolas, 8 chairlifts, 13 T-bars, 4 J-bars and 2 rope tows, listed here as three types with the drag lifts grouped. The list includes the Hinterreit I and II T-bars, which belong to the detached Hinterreit family area, and an Arthurhauslift, a name that matches the Arthurhaus marked in the Hochkeil area of the panorama. The main area is therefore served by fewer than 34 lifts. Skiresort.com lists two lift operators, Hochkönig Bergbahnen GmbH in Mühlbach and Aberg-Hinterthal Bergbahnen AG in Maria Alm, and the region sells one ticket for all of it.1

Tickets valid for more than one day are Ski amadé tickets and are valid at all lifts in Ski amadé, which includes Snow Space Salzburg, Schladming-Dachstein and Gastein among its regions. |
Box-office prices for the 2026/27 winter in the main period, 19 December 2026 to 26 March 2027. At the box office these do not vary. Online prices vary with the date of purchase and demand: adults pay 68.90 to 81.00 EUR, youths 51.90 to 61.00 EUR and children 34.50 to 40.50 EUR. In the opening and closing periods, 5 to 18 December 2026 and from 27 March 2027, the box-office day ticket is 75.50 EUR for adults, 57 EUR for youths and 38 EUR for children. Youth means born 2008 to 2010 and child means 2011 to 2020; children born in 2021 or later ski free with a companion. The Keycard deposit is 3 EUR and an age proof is needed at the box office. Partial-day tickets at main-season box-office prices cost 65.50 EUR for adults for 3 hours, until 13:00 or from 12:00, and 75.50 EUR from 11:00.

From Munich, Vienna or Villach, take the Tauern Autobahn (A10) to the Bischofshofen exit and continue toward Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm, which is a toll route. The operator's site names two toll-free approaches from Germany: via Munich, Siegsdorf and Lofer, or via Rosenheim, Kufstein, St. Johann in Tirol and Saalfelden.
The mountain
These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.
Piste km per lift km
1.27
Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.
measuredLift minutes per ski hour
84 min
Time riding up for every hour spent descending, from the graph’s own traversal times.
measuredLongest continuous descent
8.6 km
The longest run of linked pistes that never rides a lift.
measuredReachable on easy runs only
50%
Share of piste a skier can reach from the base without ever descending something harder than an easy run.
measuredNorth-facing terrain
64%
Piste facing N, NE or NW, from the bearing of each descent. Shaded aspects hold snow longest.
measuredVertical on that descent
1,066 m
measuredUphill on surface lifts

Share of climbing served by drag lifts and platters, weighted by vertical rather than by lift count.
measuredPiste above 2,500 m

Guide
Hochkönig is one chain of lifts and pistes between Maria Alm at one end and Mühlbach at the other, with Dienten in the middle. The operator's panorama draws two further areas, Hochkeil and Hinterreit, apart from that chain, and the day ticket covers both.
Three villages on one chain
The operator describes the area as a ski shuttle between Maria Alm with Hintermoos and Hinterthal, Dienten and Mühlbach. Skiresort.com dates the final link in Maria Alm to the 2018/19 season, when the Natrunbahn and Sonnbergbahn gondolas completed it, and says the Gabühelbahn of 2019 replaced the last outdated lift toward Dienten. Hinterreit is a separate family area with two T-bars, reached by ski bus from the main area. Hochkeil is a natural-snow area at 1,300 to 1,784 m that the operator lists among the small ski areas of the region and the panorama draws as its own area at the Mühlbach end. The day ticket covers both small areas.378910
The Königstour
The Königstour is a marked ski circuit of six peaks and 35 continuous piste kilometres, with 7,500 m of vertical in total, and the operator asks for skill on red pistes. Yellow and orange direction arrows mark the whole route, and a free piste map is available at every ticket office. The operator's panorama labels it in both directions, Maria Alm to Mühlbach and Mühlbach to Maria Alm. The operator reports that skiresort.de named the area and the Königstour test winners for 2026. A March 2026 alpinforum report timed a skier from the Abergbahn at 08:45 to the return at 13:30, so a full out-and-back day is a long one.29311
Mostly easy and intermediate
Skiresort.com splits the 120 km into 52 km easy (43%), 41 km intermediate (34%) and 27 km difficult (23%), with 8 km of ski routes. Beginners start at Natrun and Hintermoos, where the lift list includes a practice lift at Hintermoos and baby lifts at Natrun, and the operator names a beginner park at Natrun. Skiresort.com also lists a night-skiing piste at Natrun. The operator advertises the Marlies Schild training piste for advanced skiers.57123
Snowparks and family slopes
Kings Park, reached from Mühlbach by the Kings Cab gondola, has 1.8 km of snowpark with over 50 jibs and jumps. Natrun has a separate beginner park with small jumps and a wave track. Families get the 850 m Funslope at Schönanger, with a wave track, rainbow butterbox and sound high-five, and the Skimovie piste for filming a run is at the Schönanger piste. The Family Run in Mühlbach completes the list.127
Altitude and snow
The pistes run from about 800 to 1,900 m, and there is no glacier, so the season depends on natural snow and snowmaking. The operator schedules the whole area to close on 29 March 2027. An alpinfans report from February 2024 found the north-facing sectors at Zachhofalm, Dachegg and Fellersbach firm during a thaw while the lower pistes at Maria Alm and Natrun were heavy, which suggests aspect counts for more than height here.5313
| Skier | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Confident intermediate | excellent | The Königstour is a 35 km marked circuit over six peaks with 7,500 m of vertical, and 41 km of intermediate pistes sit beside it.25 |
| First-timer | good | Skiresort.com grades 52 km of the 120 km as easy, and the lift list includes a practice lift at Hintermoos and baby lifts at Natrun, with a beginner park at Natrun. The Königstour needs red-piste skill, so beginners stay on the easy pistes and the separate Hinterreit family area.57122 |
| Second-week skier | good | Intermediate pistes make up 41 km, the second largest share after the 52 km of easy ones. The Königstour asks for red-run skill and is a long day, so this skier may do only part of it.52 |
| Freestyler | good | Kings Park offers 1.8 km of snowpark with over 50 jibs and jumps, and Natrun has a separate beginner park for first jumps.12 |
| Family with young children | good | Children born in 2021 or later ski free with a companion, and there is an 850 m Funslope and a Family Run in Mühlbach. The small Hinterreit area sits near Maria Alm for first turns.4128 |
| Advanced skier | fair | Skiresort.com grades 27 km as difficult, 23% of the total. A March 2026 alpinforum report found both Aberg blacks excellent into the afternoon, a snowHeads thread recommends the upper Aberg terrain over the Königstour itself, and a February 2026 alpinfans trip report preferred the black Karbach descent to Mühlbach over the blue.5141115 |
| Budget skier | fair | The box-office day ticket is 81 EUR in the main period and 75.50 EUR at the start and finale, with online prices from 68.90 EUR depending on the purchase date.4 |
| Late-season skier | poor | The whole area is scheduled to close on 29 March 2027, only the Aberg lift is scheduled to run to 4 April, and the highest lift-served point is about 1,900 m with no glacier.35 |
By car
From Munich, Vienna or Villach, take the Tauern Autobahn (A10) to the Bischofshofen exit and continue toward Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm, which is a toll route. The operator's site names two toll-free approaches from Germany: via Munich, Siegsdorf and Lofer, or via Rosenheim, Kufstein, St. Johann in Tirol and Saalfelden.
By train
The nearest stations are Saalfelden, Lend and Bischofshofen. Bus 620 runs from Saalfelden through Maria Alm and Hinterthal to Dienten, bus 590 from Bischofshofen to Mühlbach, and bus 631 from Dienten to Lend. In winter the ski bus runs from Maria Alm to Dienten and within Mühlbach, with no connection between Mühlbach and Dienten.
Where to base yourself
| Maria Alm | The western base, at about 800 m, with the Natrunbahn and Sonnbergbahn gondolas, and the Abergbahn at Aberg in Maria Alm |
|---|---|
| Dienten | The middle base, at about 1,070 m, with the Gabühelbahn, Bürglalmbahn, Dacheggbahn and Zachhofalmbahn |
| Mühlbach | The eastern base, at about 860 m, with the Karbachalmbahn gondola and the Kings Cab gondola to Kings Park |
What skiers say
-
Ski midweek rather than on a peak-January Saturday.11
A January 2026 alpinforum thread logs a packed Saturday, with the Mühlbach car park full early and lift failures adding to the queues, and an almost private Wednesday four days later, when the poster did not share a chair until 10:30.
-
For a fast Mühlbach-to-Maria-Alm day, be at the Karbachalmbahn before 08:30.16
A March 2026 alpinfans report has the poster past Dienten by 10:05 with no queues, and notes that the Karbachalmbahn sometimes starts just before its advertised 08:30 while later arrivals queued behind poorly filled cabins.
-
Avoid the Schönangerbahn and the Abergalmbahn in the morning if you want mileage.11
A February 2026 alpinforum report found waits of only a few chairs elsewhere, while these two lifts collected the morning queues. The Abergalmbahn was much calmer later in the day.
-
Ski the Gabühel descent early on warm days.1116
Alpinforum reports from February and March 2026 describe it as soft and churned by morning in warm weather, with large bumps by late afternoon, although one February report still found it serviceable at 14:00. An alpinfans report from March 2026 saw more skiers riding the Gabühel gondola down after lunch.
-
Plan the Königstour as a full day.1117
A March 2026 alpinforum report timed a fast skier from the Abergbahn at 08:45 to the return at 13:30 with no lunch stop. A snowHeads poster (thread 150322, undated) called Maria Alm to Mühlbach and back close to a full day for intermediates.
-
Without a car from Salzburg, take the train to Bischofshofen and the bus to the Karbachalmbahn in Mühlbach.1819
An r/Salzburg thread about the 2025/26 season, started after the direct Salzburg ski coach was dropped, discusses this route. The operator lists bus 590 from Bischofshofen to Mühlbach.
-
Pick the road approach by the village where you are staying.20
A snowHeads thread on where to stay (78962, undated) says the villages sit at opposite ends of a long linear area and use different road corridors: Saalfelden for Maria Alm, Bischofshofen for Mühlbach.
-
Arrive at Mühlbach well before 08:30 for the free car park beside the Karbachalmbahn.16
A January 2026 alpinfans report says the lot filled quickly and a sizeable lift queue had formed before opening.
-
Do not choose Dienten as a base only because it is central on the piste map.207
A snowHeads poster (thread 78962, undated and older) found both approaches over high roads awkward in snowfall and the village shop and restaurant choice limited. Skiresort.com says the Gabühelbahn of 2019 has since replaced the last outdated lift toward Dienten.
-
Leave the signed Königstour after the Sinalcobahn for the red and black descents to Hinterthal.2111
A snowHeads poster (thread 136505, undated) says most through-skiers carry on toward Dienten and these slopes stay quieter, with Hochmais Alm about three-quarters of the way down for a stop. A January 2026 alpinforum report points the same way.
-
In a warm spell, go to the north-facing sectors at Zachhofalm, Dachegg and Fellersbach.13
A February 2024 alpinfans report found these three firm during a thaw while lower Maria Alm and Natrun were heavy, and concluded that aspect mattered more than elevation.
-
Advanced skiers can lap the upper Aberg reds and blacks instead of following the Königstour.1411
A snowHeads thread (170423, undated) recommends the Aberg terrain off the route, and a March 2026 alpinforum report found both Aberg blacks excellent into the afternoon while the valley runs were soft.
-
On the way down to Mühlbach, take the black Karbach descent if it is open.1511
A February 2026 alpinfans trip report says a group abandoned the blue alternative as flat and traverse-heavy and preferred the black. A March 2026 alpinforum report notes the black is often among the first variants to close late in the season.
-
Use Natrun above Maria Alm as the fallback for sun and visibility.22
A 26 December 2025 alpinfans report found the Sonnbergbahn side sunny until nearly 16:00 and Natrun clear and uncrowded on a snowy, windy day, while visibility at Aberg varied and Gabühel was nearly whiteout.
-
For quiet natural-snow laps, try the separate Hochkeil and Arthurhaus area from Mühlbach.2013
A snowHeads poster (thread 78962, undated) praised its snow and small circuit, and an alpinfans thread for the 2023/24 season notes that operation can be partial and limited to certain days, so check before going.
-
For a quieter lunch, skip the Steinbockalm on Gabühel and continue to the Bürglalm at Wastlhöhe.22
A 26 December 2025 alpinfans report describes the Steinbockalm as busy with Königstour traffic and the Bürglalm as calmer and old-style.
-
In Maria Alm village, try Almer Bauernkastn rather than a hotel restaurant.21
A snowHeads poster (thread 136505, undated) with seven or eight visits called it the best food in the village, a few minutes' walk from Hotel Eder.
-
At the Mühlbach end, order the poppy-seed cake at the Karbachalm.13
An alpinfans poster in a February 2024 thread named it a favourite stop on a difficult snow day.
-
For a smaller hut on the Aberg side, find the Wastlalm via the drag lift and piste 15.21
A snowHeads poster (thread 136505, undated) named it a favourite Aberg hut, and its less convenient access keeps the through traffic away.
-
Treat the Königstour as a there-and-back day, not a one-way circuit.23179
The operator's panorama labels it in both directions between Maria Alm and Mühlbach. A February 2025 r/skithealps thread and snowHeads thread 150322 advise starting from Mühlbach when arriving from St Johann or Bischofshofen.
-
Recheck the Abergalmbahn before going from Dienten toward Maria Alm.1311
A February 2024 alpinfans report found the lift not running although the app showed everything open, and a February 2026 alpinforum report describes a storm closure that cut the link, with shuttle buses laid on.
-
Do not assume every Maria Alm piste under the Hochkönig name is lift-linked to the rest.814
Hinterreit is detached from the main network. The operator's own Hinterreit site says the ski bus from its valley station reaches the Hochkönig region in a few minutes, and a snowHeads thread (170423, undated) adds that it is a couple of drag-lift runs used for race training.
-
Do not send a cautious red-run skier down Gabühel piste 21 or the Natrun Steilhang because both are marked red.2425
A February 2019 alpinforum report and a December 2022 alpinforum report describe deep soft bumps and a scraped final pitch into Dienten on Gabühel 21, and one of them rates the Natrun Steilhang steep enough for a black grade.
-
Before a late-March Königstour, check the lower Schwarzeckalm link and Gabühel.11
A March 2026 alpinforum report names the nearly brown Schwarzeckalm section as the link most likely to break the traverse, and says the sunny Gabühel can be poor unusually early in the day.

Questions
How many kilometres of piste does Hochkönig have?
The operator markets up to 120 km of piste at Hochkönig, between Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach, served by 34 lifts. Skiresort.com splits that 120 km into 52 km easy, 41 km intermediate and 27 km difficult, with 8 km of ski routes. Neither source says how the total is made up.15
What is the Königstour at Hochkönig?
The Königstour is a marked ski circuit through the Hochkönig ski area, covering six peaks and 35 continuous piste kilometres with 7,500 m of vertical in total. The operator marks it with yellow and orange arrows and asks for skill on red pistes. It links Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach.2
How much is a day ticket at Hochkönig?
The Hochkönig day ticket for winter 2026/27 costs 81 EUR for adults, 61 EUR for youths born 2008 to 2010 and 40.50 EUR for children born 2011 to 2020 at the box office from 19 December 2026 to 26 March 2027. Online prices vary by purchase date, from 68.90 EUR for adults. Children born in 2021 or later ski free with a companion.4
Are Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach connected on skis?
Yes, the operator describes Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach as one ski shuttle, and the Königstour crosses all three. Two smaller areas on the same day ticket, Hinterreit and Hochkeil, are drawn apart from the main network on the operator's panorama. The ski bus does not run between Mühlbach and Dienten.32919
When does the Hochkönig ski season run?
For winter 2026/27 the operator schedules the whole Hochkönig area, including the Königstour, to open from 5 December 2026 to 29 March 2027. From 30 March to 4 April 2027 only the Aberg lift in Maria Alm is scheduled to run, and dates depend on snow and weather.3
Is Hochkönig good for beginners?
Yes for the ground around the villages, less so for the circuit. Skiresort.com grades 52 km of the 120 km as easy, with practice and baby lifts at Natrun and Hintermoos and a beginner park at Natrun. The Königstour needs skill on red pistes, so beginners will not use it.57122
How do you reach Hochkönig without a car?
Take the train to Saalfelden for Maria Alm and Dienten or to Bischofshofen for Mühlbach, then the bus. Bus 620 runs from Saalfelden to Maria Alm, Hinterthal and Dienten, and bus 590 from Bischofshofen to Mühlbach. Salzburg airport is about an hour away by road or rail.19
