Open in SkiAllDayThe verdict
Ski Gastein's Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel circuit links Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein across three mountains. Skiresort.com measures 82.7 km of piste between 860 and 2,300 m, and the operator publishes no total for this area. About 60% of the piste is intermediate and only 3% is black, so it suits families and confident intermediates better than experts. The 180 km marketed for Ski Gastein includes two areas reached by bus.1234567
Goes well for
- Intermediate skiers who want long red pistes: 49.3 of the 82.7 km are graded intermediate, and the two longest listed pistes on the Schlossalm side, H31 Kasereben and H32 Käferstall, run about 7 km each
- Families and first-timers: the Angertal ski centre has a dedicated learning area and practice lifts, and 30.8 km of piste is graded easy
- Rail travellers: the Stubnerkogelbahn valley station is near Bad Gastein railway station, and the ski buses are free with a valid ski pass
Goes badly for
- Experts who want steep on-piste skiing: only 2.6 km of the 82.7 km is graded difficult
- Early-season and spring skiing on the full circuit: the link between Schlossalm, Angertal and Stubnerkogel runs only from 11 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, and the lifts close at 15:30 until 31 January
- Anyone expecting the marketed 180 km from one lift ticket without a bus: Sportgastein and Dorfgastein-Grossarltal are separate areas with no lift link to this one
Key facts
Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.
Elevation 1,461m vertical · 843–2,304 m
| Village | 859 m8 |
|---|---|
| Lowest piste | 843 m5 |
| Highest lift-served point | 2,304 m5 |
| Vertical drop | 1,461 m |
The base is the valley station of the Schlossalmbahn I in Bad Hofgastein at 843 m, and the top is the upper station of the Hohe Scharte double chair at 2,304 m, both from the lift table on gastein.com. Skiresort.com rounds this to 860 to 2,300 m, a difference of 1,440 m. The operator's own piste map marks Bad Hofgastein at 860 m, Bad Gastein at 1,002 m, the Skizentrum Angertal at 1,175 m, Schlossalm at 2,050 m and the Stubnerkogel at 2,246 m. The 2,686 m and 2,650 m figures in the operator's fact sheet belong to Sportgastein, which this page does not cover.
Pistes 82.7km measured, not marketed
- Easy 30.8km 37%
- Intermediate 49.3km 60%
- Difficult 2.6km 3%
Plus 1.3 km of marked ski routes, which are neither pisted nor patrolled to piste standard.
Marketed vs measuredGasteiner Bergbahnen publishes no piste total for Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel on its own pages, so the figure here is skiresort.com's 82.7 km, split 30.8 km easy, 49.3 km intermediate and 2.6 km difficult, plus 1.3 km of ski routes. Other aggregators differ: bergfex gives 84 km. The headline numbers the operator and the valley tourist board do publish cover more ground: 180 km across three ski areas on gastein.com, and 110 km in the operator's company fact sheet, which does not say which areas it counts. The operator's own figures for the other two areas are about 70 km for Dorfgastein-Grossarltal and 24 km for Sportgastein, which leaves roughly 86 km of a 180 km total for this one. Neither Sportgastein nor Dorfgastein-Grossarltal is reached by lift from this circuit, so their kilometres are not in the figure on this page.
Lifts 14 5 types in the fleet
- Chairlift 6
- Gondola 4
- T-bar 2
- Conveyor belt 1
- Practice lift 1
The lift table on gastein.com lists these 14 installations for the area, counting a two-section gondola once: Schlossalmbahn, Stubnerkogelbahn and Senderbahn (two sections each) and the single-section Kaserebenbahn. Counts elsewhere differ with the definition: skiresort.com lists 17 lifts and German Wikipedia lists 5 cable cars, 7 chairlifts and 7 drag lifts for the circuit. The operator's fact sheet gives 20 lifts for the whole company, which also runs Sportgastein and Graukogel.5

The ALL-IN Card White season pass covers five Ski amadé regions with up to 760 km of piste and 260 lifts; the early-bird bonus runs until 3 December. The SuperSkiCard covers 22 ski regions in Austria and Bavaria. Ikon, Epic and Magic passes are not mentioned on the operator's ticket pages. An ÖBB combination ticket works as a train ticket and as a voucher for the ski pass, exchanged on site. |
Box-office prices for a one-day Ski amadé LIVE ticket in the 2026/27 main season, 19 December 2026 to 26 March 2027, from the operator's price page. Online early-bird prices start lower, at 69.50 for an adult, 52.50 for a youth and 35.00 for a child. Adults are born 2007 or earlier, youths 2008 to 2010 and children 2011 to 2020; children born 2021 or later ski free. Before 10 December 2026 and from 5 April 2027 a one-day ticket is 59.00 for an adult, and the START and FINALE weeks, 11 to 18 December 2026 and 27 March to 4 April 2027, cost 76.00 at the window. The operator's price page lists the main-season ticket as valid on Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, Dorfgastein-Grossarltal and Sportgastein.

The mountain
These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.
Piste km per lift km
1.97
Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.
measuredLift minutes per ski hour
54 min
Time riding up for every hour spent descending, from the graph’s own traversal times.
measuredLongest continuous descent
8.3 km
The longest run of linked pistes that never rides a lift.
measuredReachable on easy runs only
44%
Share of piste a skier can reach from the base without ever descending something harder than an easy run.
measuredNorth-facing terrain
54%
Piste facing N, NE or NW, from the bearing of each descent. Shaded aspects hold snow longest.
measuredVertical on that descent
1,458 m
measuredUphill on surface lifts
7%
Share of climbing served by drag lifts and platters, weighted by vertical rather than by lift count.
measuredPiste above 2,500 m
0%
measuredMedian piste altitude
1,721 m
Half the piste length lies above this height and half below, weighted by length.
measuredSkiers per piste km
98
At full lift capacity — a ceiling for comparing resorts, not a forecast of your day. Derived from uphill capacity, lift ride times and the split between riding and descending.
measuredAverage lift capacity
2,238/h
People per hour, averaged across lifts. High can mean short queues, or a lot of people arriving on the same runs.
measuredMean piste gradient

Guide
Three mountains form one circuit: Schlossalm above Bad Hofgastein, the Angertal ski centre in the middle, and the Stubnerkogel above Bad Gastein. The Schlossalm side has the longest pistes, Angertal has the beginner terrain, and the Stubnerkogel side has the shorter pistes down to Bad Gastein.
Two valley gondolas and a middle base
Bad Hofgastein's Schlossalmbahn is a two-section 10-seat gondola from 843 m to 2,066 m, opened on 1 December 2018 in place of a funicular and an aerial tramway. Bad Gastein's Stubnerkogelbahn is a two-section 8-seat gondola from 1,096 m to 2,233 m, opened in December 2009. Angertal sits between them at 1,175 m with two more 8-seat gondolas, the Kaserebenbahn towards Schlossalm and the Senderbahn, which has run to the Stubnerkogel since 2008.5101112
Long reds on the Schlossalm side
Skiresort.com grades 49.3 km of the network intermediate, and the Schlossalm side holds the longest pistes in the operator's table: H31 Kasereben at 6.9 km and H32 Käferstall at 7.0 km, both skied from Schlossalm towards Angertal. The operator calls H1 Die Nord one of the longest valley descents in Salzburg, and the table lists 1,440 m of height difference for it. The Gastein tourist board's lift table puts the highest lift-served point of the circuit at the Hohe Scharte double chair, at 2,304 m.151314
Beginner terrain at Angertal
The Angertal ski centre holds the GASTI Park learning area, a practice lift at Judau and conveyor belts at 1,180 m, and the operator sells a Beginner Schnupper-Ticket for one Angertalbahn ride and one descent. Skiresort.com grades 30.8 km of the network easy, 37% of the total. A German trip report from February 2017 warns that several of the blue and red pistes would be graded one level harder elsewhere, so a weak beginner should check the connecting pistes before leaving the learning area.1559114
Stubnerkogel and the way down to Bad Gastein
The Stubnerkogel is 2,246 m high and carries a 140 m suspension bridge, a snow park and a fun centre in the mountain station. The B-series pistes on the Stubnerkogel and Angertal side run 0.4 to 3.8 km each in the operator's table, most of them shorter than the Schlossalm reds. The company's fact sheet gives 80% snowmaking cover, 1,000 snow machines and four reservoirs holding 300,000 m3, and does not split those figures by area.15513
The detached areas
Sportgastein, Dorfgastein-Grossarltal and Graukogel are not part of this circuit. The operator's winter pages describe three ski areas: this one, Sportgastein with about 24 km of pistes and Dorfgastein-Grossarltal with about 70 km. A free ski bus with a valid ski pass links them, and line 550 runs through Bad Gastein to Sportgastein. Graukogel's lifts appear in the same lift table, but neither the operator's winter ski-area list nor its 2026/27 operating hours include it.4752
| Skier | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Confident intermediate | excellent | 49.3 km, or 60% of the network, is graded intermediate, including the 7 km H31 and H32 pistes between Schlossalm and Angertal.15 |
| Rail traveller | excellent | The Stubnerkogelbahn valley station is near Bad Gastein railway station, and the winter ski buses are free with a valid ski pass.67 |
| First-timer | good | Angertal has the GASTI Park learning area, a practice lift and conveyor belts, and 30.8 km of the network is graded easy. The easy pistes are 37% of the area.1551 |
| Family with children | good | The operator lists a family park on Schlossalm, a fun centre in the Stubnerkogel mountain station and the GASTI Park at Angertal, and children born 2021 or later ski free.159 |
| Second-week skier | fair | Most of the network is red, and a German trip report from February 2017 calls many local blues and reds harder than the same grade elsewhere, while other visitors found them manageable for children.114 |
| Expert on piste | poor | Only 2.6 km is graded difficult, 3% of the network. Experts looking for steeper terrain are better placed at Sportgastein, which the operator describes as the freeride-focused area and the highest in Ski amade.14 |
By car
From Salzburg take the A10 Tauern motorway south to Bischofshofen, then the B311 to Lend and the B167 up the valley through Bad Hofgastein to Bad Gastein. The Schlossalmbahn starts in Bad Hofgastein, the Stubnerkogelbahn in Bad Gastein and the Angertal ski centre sits between them.
By train
Bad Gastein station is on the Tauern railway, near the lower station of the Stubnerkogelbahn. Bad Hofgastein station is about 3 km north of the town centre, with bus line 558 running hourly between the two. Winter ski buses are free with a valid ski pass: line 551 runs from the Schlossalmbahn in Bad Hofgastein to Angertal, and line 550 runs from St. Johann through Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein to Sportgastein.
Where to base yourself
| Bad Hofgastein | 859 m. The Schlossalmbahn valley station, at 843 m, starts the Schlossalm side. |
|---|---|
| Angertal | The Skizentrum Angertal at 1,175 m, between the two towns, with the learning area, the Kaserebenbahn and the Senderbahn. The ski bus line 551 connects it to the Schlossalmbahn. |
| Bad Gastein | 1,002 m. The Stubnerkogelbahn valley station, at 1,096 m, starts the Stubnerkogel side and is near the railway station. |
What skiers say
-
In spring, ski the sunny Schlossalm side in the morning and the north-facing Sender piste B18 after lunch.16
A March 2022 alpinforum trip report found the sunny Schlossalm-to-Angertal descent slushy around 13:30 while B18 on the Stubnerkogel side was still firm, softening only after 15:00.
-
On a peak holiday, start from Angertal or the Stubnerkogel instead of the Schlossalmbahn.17
An alpinforum report from Carnival Monday 2026 describes a 25-minute queue at the Schlossalmbahn at 09:30, with snowfall concentrating skiers on the sheltered Schlossalm-to-Angertal pistes.
-
When Bad Hofgastein is busy, enter the circuit at Angertal.18
A Gastein resident wrote on r/snowboarding in February 2026 that Angertal is the better way into the linked area on busy weekends, and that Sportgastein or Dorfgastein are the fallback when Angertal is crowded too.
-
Plan the day around a 15:30 last ride until the end of January.1917
The operator's hours run to 15:30 until 31 January and 16:00 after. alpinforum posters in November 2024 and January 2026 both mention the early close, so check the day's timetable before crossing between sides late in the afternoon.
-
Arrive by train at Bad Gastein and walk to the Stubnerkogelbahn.20
A February 2026 thread on r/Salzburg about travelling without a ski bus notes that the Stubnerkogelbahn valley station sits right beside the station, which removes the valley transfer.
-
Ask whether ÖBB is selling its Ski Gastein rail ticket before buying a regional fare.17
An alpinforum regular reported in November 2025 that the 2025/26 version covered rail travel from within Salzburg state at no charge. Treat it as seasonal and check the dates.
-
At the Schlossalmbahn, the outdoor car park is the free one.21
In December 2023 alpinforum posters reported the garage had become paid parking at 5 EUR a day or 30 EUR a week while the outside spaces stayed free. Confirm current rates.
-
In Bad Gastein, book near the station and Stubnerkogelbahn.22
A snowHeads thread warns that the town is steep and that lower accommodation can mean an uphill walk with ski gear each morning, unless the hotel runs its own shuttle.
-
Ski the Senderbahn's B18 and B18a when the central pistes are scraped.2316
A February 2025 alpinforum report called B18 and the black B18a the best and emptiest runs of the day, and the March 2022 report found B18 holding firm snow later than the sunnier slopes.
-
Ski H1 Hohe Scharte-Nord early in the day.1424
A January 2017 alpinforum report liked the varied terrain, while a December 2023 report found the shaded, tracked piste and flat light much less enjoyable near closing time.
-
Use the slow Hohe Scharte double chair to repeat H5 and reach H1.14
The January 2017 alpinforum report praised the secluded bowl above it and found the H5 variants grippier on natural snow than the busier machine-made pistes.
-
Link the Sender side through Burgstall into B11 for a long north-facing descent.2526
alpinforum reports from March 2013 and February 2017 call B11 a morning highlight, broad and good for large turns, with a flat final section that rewards carrying speed.
-
Bring lunch and use the self-catering room at the Stubnerkogel summit.24
A family visiting over New Year 2023/24 praised the room on alpinforum as unusually good and family-friendly.
-
For lunch on the Stubnerkogel side, try the Bergstadl just above the middle station.23
A frequent visitor on alpinforum in 2024/25 called it the standout newcomer for food and friendly staff, and the same thread also favoured the Stubneralm and the Hamburger Hütte.
-
Buy the day ticket online early if your dates are fixed.27
In the 2024/25 pricing thread on alpinforum, one early-bird price rose by 12 EUR within three days, and the window price was the top tariff.
-
Bring forgotten gear into the valley, and use a Gastein shop for fitting or urgent service.28
A December 2022 r/Austria thread reported resort clothing at roughly three times shop prices, and recommended Sport Schober for heat-fitting boots.
-
Choose between H31 and H32 on purpose when going from Schlossalm to Angertal.14
The January 2017 alpinforum report describes H31 as a very long, flat traverse and the red H32 Käferstall as steep, often slick and awkwardly narrow at the end.
-
Use the valley descent to Bad Gastein as a way home, and expect disagreement about it.2326
A February 2025 alpinforum report calls much of it an uninteresting forest-road traverse and prefers the upper Stubnerkogel, while a 2017 post enjoys the steeper middle pitch. Afternoon traffic is the main complaint.
-
Do not assume every blue and red is easy for a weak beginner.1429
The January 2017 alpinforum report says many blues and reds would be graded one level harder elsewhere, while a September 2021 r/skiing thread found the reds manageable for children.
-
Check the separate Skischaukelverbindung dates before planning the full circuit.1930
alpinforum season threads from November 2024 and April 2025 describe partial early-season operation, a link window shorter than the headline season, and a closure in early April while the upper pistes still had good snow.
-
In föhn or strong wind, start on the Schlossalm side.3119
An alpinforum report from December 2008 and another from November 2024 both single out the Stubnerkogel as the wind-sensitive side. In November 2024 its gondola ran for pedestrians only after wind stopped ski operation.
