The verdict

Saas-Fee is a car-free glacier resort at 1,800 m in the Saastal, Valais, with lifts up to Mittelallalin at about 3,500 m. The operator quotes 100 km of piste for the village area and 150 km for the whole valley; we measure 44.9 km in the connected network around the village. It suits skiers who want altitude, early snow and a long glacier descent. It suits less those who want varied terrain below 2,500 m or easy blues.1234567891011

Goes well for

  • Skiers who want snow reliability and altitude: 52% of the measured piste lies above 2,500 m, the season starts on 31 October, and a small glacier area skis in summer
  • Confident intermediates: the measured network is almost evenly split between blue and red, and the descent from Mittelallalin to the village is 10.2 km long with 1,803 m of vertical
  • Anyone who wants a car-free village: Saas-Fee keeps cars at the village entrance, and posters on r/askswitzerland and r/skiing put most lifts within about 15 minutes on foot

Goes badly for

  • Beginners who want to ski home: forum posters describe the true blue pistes as disconnected, and only 27% of the measured network can be reached without skiing a red
  • Cold, shaded skiing in mid-winter: 73% of the measured piste faces north, northeast or northwest, and community reports say the village gets very little direct sun in December and January
  • Tight budgets: an adult day pass is CHF 84 for 2026/27 and posters on snowHeads and Tripadvisor describe food on the mountain as expensive

Key facts

Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.

The village is at 1,800 m per the operator's own resort page and the 1,800 m label on its piste map. Skiresort.com gives the ski area as 1,800 to 3,573 m, which is the range used here. The operator quotes 1,500 to 3,600 m for the whole Saastal, which includes the lower villages of Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen and the Hohsaas side, so it is not a Saas-Fee figure. The Metro Alpin top station at Mittelallalin is at 3,456 m per German Wikipedia and is labelled 3,500 m on the operator's map; our graph's highest ski point is 3,561 m.

Marketed vs measuredThe Saastal Tourismus AG Erlebniskarte for winter 2025/26 gives 100 km for Saas-Fee, 34 km for Saas-Grund, 15 km for Saas-Almagell and 1 km for Saas-Balen, which adds up to the 150 km the operator advertises for the whole valley. This page uses the 100 km for Saas-Fee. Skiresort.com lists 101 km of piste plus 5 km of ski routes for the same area, split 21 km easy, 60 km intermediate and 20 km difficult. Our routing graph covers the Saas-Fee area only, as one connected network, and measures 44.9 km of marked piste. Easy pistes agree closely (21.2 km measured against 21 km), so the gap sits in red and black: 21.5 km measured against 60 km, and 2.3 km against 20 km. We have not identified which pistes the OpenStreetMap data lacks, so treat our 44.9 km as a floor rather than a rival total. Two pistes in that figure carry '(Sommer)' in their OpenStreetMap names, which suggests summer-glacier lines are counted too.

Lifts 22 5 types in the fleet
  • Surface lift 11
  • Gondola 5
  • Cable car 3
  • Chairlift 2
  • Funicular 1

The operator publishes no lift total. English Wikipedia counts 22 lifts: three cable cars, one funicular, five gondolas, two chairlifts and the rest surface lifts. Skiresort.com counts 23, so expect a difference of one depending on what is counted. The funicular is the Metro Alpin, which runs from Felskinn to Mittelallalin and is described by the operator's own map as the highest funicular in the world. Our measurement finds 28% of the climbing, weighted by vertical, is on surface lifts.12

Summer skiingSaas-Fee operates a summer ski area on the Feegletscher above Mittelallalin and advertises 20 km of prepared piste. German Wikipedia describes the summer skiing as usually served by three lifts on the glacier from Mittelallalin, and notes that in summer 2022 the pistes closed for the first time for lack of snow. The operator announced a partial reopening from 3 October 2026, with only the two upper lifts, Allalin 2 and Allalin 3, running; the two lower ones could not open.

Saas-Fee is car-free. The operator points drivers to the car park at the village entrance, and offers a 25% discount on the BLS Autoverlad Lötschberg car train in several of its packages. Community posters report that on peak Christmas dates the car park fills and day visitors are sent to Saas-Grund to take a bus up.

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 16 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

0.81

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

The ski area is one connected network above the village. Five lifts leave the village: the Alpin Express, the Felskinn cable car, the Spielboden gondola (with the Längfluh cable car above it), and the Plattjen and Hannig gondolas. The Metro Alpin carries skiers from Felskinn to Mittelallalin.

Glacier skiing above 3,000 m

The Metro Alpin funicular runs 1,749 m through a tunnel from Felskinn at 2,980 m to Mittelallalin at 3,456 m, and the Allalin drag lifts on the Feegletscher serve the highest pistes. Our measurement puts 52% of the piste above 2,500 m, with a median piste altitude of 2,637 m. This is the sector that keeps the area open from 31 October and, in summer, supports the glacier skiing.1341415

The long descent to the village

The longest run of linked pistes without a lift in our graph is 10.2 km, dropping 1,803 m. German Wikipedia gives the descent from Mittelallalin to Saas-Fee as 14 km with 1,778 m of vertical, so the vertical agrees and the length differs. A December 2021 skipass.com thread presents it as the signature descent, with the upper station feeding the Felskinn, Längfluh and Spielboden side. The operator's timetable distinguishes days with and without the valley run, so the lower part is not always open, and it notes that the second section of the Alpin Express runs when Morenia is open without the valley run.4161714

Plattjen, Morenia and the village side

Plattjen has a gondola from the village, opening on 19 December, and a red piste of the same name. A black piste called Galen and a red Galen also appear in our data. Morenia is a chairlift built in 2006. Hannig is a gondola that also opens on 19 December, but our graph holds no marked piste leaving its top station, so it counts here as lift access and not as ski terrain. A snowHeads poster singles out the Egginerjoch drag and the rollers on red 9, and warns that the broad red below Morenia narrows at the bottom.1441618

Where the easy terrain is

Skiresort.com rates 21 km as easy, and we measure 21.2 km of blue, but only 27% of our measured network can be reached without skiing a red. The village has its own lifts, the Dorflifte, with a separate pass from CHF 64 for two days. A snowHeads thread titled 'Saas Fee advice, Beginners' and a 2009 'Saas-fee with family' thread describe the true blues as disconnected from each other, with a risk that a closure turns the way back to the village into a red.345619

Snow, sun and wind

Our measurement finds 73% of the piste facing north, northeast or northwest, which keeps snow cold at the cost of sun. An r/skiing thread from March 2023 and a snowHeads thread both say the village gets very little direct midwinter sun, and the same posters point to west-facing Plattjen for afternoon light. A snowmaking system went into operation in 1998. Upper lifts hold for wind: a February 2016 snowHeads trip report recorded several wind closures and days when the whole system stopped.47181620

SkierVerdictWhy
Confident intermediate excellent Skiresort.com rates 60 of the 101 km as intermediate, and the glacier reds, the long descent and the Egginerjoch rollers all sit at this level. A mean gradient of 22% measured across the network is moderate.3418
Early-season or summer skier excellent The season starts on 31 October, 52% of the measured piste lies above 2,500 m, and the glacier skis in summer with 20 km of prepared piste, although only two upper lifts reopened on 3 October 2026 and the pistes closed in summer 2022 for lack of snow.241516
Second-week skier good The measured network is split almost evenly between 21.2 km of blue and 21.5 km of red, so there is room to move up. The long descent from the glacier is a goal for this level once the reds feel easy.4
Family with children good Children up to 5.99 years ski free, and children up to 8.99 ski free when a parent buys a 6-day pass and holds the SaastalCard. The village is car-free and the village lifts have their own tariff.5
First-timer fair The village lifts have their own cheap pass and Skiresort.com rates 21 km as easy, but only 27% of the measured network is reachable without skiing a red, and posters describe the blues as disconnected.5346
Advanced skier fair Skiresort.com rates 20 km as difficult but we find 2.3 km of black in the OpenStreetMap network, so the marked steep terrain is limited whichever figure is right. Posters warn that the sidecountry around Spielboden, Längfluh and Felskinn carries hidden rocks and large crevasses and recommend a guide.342122
Budget skier fair An adult day pass is CHF 84 and the cheapest ways down are the Magic Pass, the Sleep and Ski Flexpass and the multi-day tariffs. Posters on snowHeads and Tripadvisor describe mountain food as expensive and suggest buying lunch in the village.52823

By car

Saas-Fee is car-free. The operator points drivers to the car park at the village entrance, and offers a 25% discount on the BLS Autoverlad Lötschberg car train in several of its packages. Community posters report that on peak Christmas dates the car park fills and day visitors are sent to Saas-Grund to take a bus up.

By train

There is no railway station in Saas-Fee. Trains run to Visp, where PostAuto line 511 leaves for Saas-Fee every 30 minutes. The operator gives 3 hours from Zurich and Basel and 2 hours from Bern, and about 3.5 hours in total by rail and bus from Zurich, Geneva or Milan airports.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 16 October 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • During Christmas and New Year, be through the Alpin Express gates before 08:30; by then the queue can already reach the turnstiles or door.27

A December 2025 post in the alpinforum.com thread 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2025-26' found the queue already at the turnstiles at 08:30 over Christmas and New Year. Above the base most waits stayed under ten minutes except from about 10:30 to noon, and the post named the Längfluh piste and the afternoon Morenia home run as the recurring crowded spots.

  • On limited early-season weekends, use Morenia as soon as it opens instead of automatically joining the Metro Alpin queue for the glacier.28

A November 2023 post in the alpinforum.com thread 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2023/24' reports a 40-minute Alpin Express wait at 08:50 and another 25 minutes at Metro Alpin, while the first Morenia laps after its 09:45 opening were empty.

  • After a major storm, do not assume blue skies mean immediate glacier access: Alpin Express commonly restarts first, followed progressively by Morenia, Plattjen and Längfluh.27

A post in the alpinforum.com 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2025-26' thread describes roughly one metre of snow in March 2026: everything stayed shut on Sunday, reopening began around 09:00 on Monday, Morenia's first ride was about 10:30, and the newly opened pistes deteriorated quickly while still soft.

  • Drive to the single parking complex at the village entrance and choose the open-air spaces nearest the village if available to shorten the walk in ski boots.1011

Threads on r/askswitzerland (April 2024) and r/skiing (April 2026) put most lifts within roughly 15 minutes on foot of the car-free core, with electric taxis and small buses available.

  • On peak Christmas dates, be prepared for the Saas-Fee garage to fill and for day visitors to be diverted to Saas-Grund Zenlauinen for a bus uphill.27

A post in the alpinforum.com 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2025-26' thread describes the 2025 holiday surge: some passengers farther along the valley reportedly watched as many as five full buses pass, and evening waits reached 30 minutes.

  • For a rail arrival, book the journey through to Saas-Fee Busterminal and make the train-to-PostBus change at Visp rather than arranging a separate resort transfer.19

In a 2009 snowHeads thread, 'Saas-fee with family', visitors describe the station-to-bus connection at Visp as straightforward and coordinated, and Saas-Fee itself has no railway station.

  • When it is open, take the Egginerjoch drag and ski red 9 for its rollers rather than treating the lift as merely a link.1827

A repeat visitor in the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee - completely conflicting reviews!!' singles out the rollers on red 9, and a post in the alpinforum.com 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2025-26' thread called Egginerjoch the standout of a March 2026 day for grippy, powdery piste snow.

  • Commit to the Mittelallalin-to-village descent when the lower pistes are still sound for a continuous run of more than 1,700 m of vertical.17

A December 2021 skipass.com thread, 'Saas Fee (Valais) - Présentation', treats the upper station as the start of the main Felskinn, Längfluh and Spielboden side. We measure the longest descent at 10.2 km with 1,803 m of vertical.

  • On the broad red below Morenia, resist drifting down toward skier's right and preserve speed for the narrow exit at the bottom.18

A repeat visitor in the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee - completely conflicting reviews!!' warns that the right side funnels skiers into a crowded low point, making the final constriction awkward although the piste looks extremely wide at the top.

  • For a proper piste-side lunch, follow the signed side track from blue 4b to Gletschergrotte and enter with enough speed to clear its uphill sections.1929

Repeat visitors in the snowHeads threads 'Saas-fee with family' and 'The Ultimate Saas Fee Thread' recommend the rösti, the home-style food and the service; they note that the approach contains an uphill, a dip and another uphill that become a walk if entered slowly.

  • Buy lunch supplies at a village bakery, Coop or Migros before lifts open instead of paying for every meal on the mountain.823

Posters in the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee how much does food cost on the mountain' and the Tripadvisor Saas-Fee forum found on-mountain food expensive and named supermarket or bakery sandwiches as the practical budget option. Descending at lunchtime is possible but costs ski time.

  • Use the heated lockers at the bottom of the piste to avoid carrying skis and wet boots across the car-free village every day.30

A December 2023 r/snowboarding thread reports CHF 12 for a 24-hour double locker with dryers for boots and gloves. That is a historical price, so check the current rate.

  • If Saas-Fee is part of a longer Swiss season, compare the Magic Pass with separate day tickets before buying resort passes.3132

A snowHeads thread on the Swiss Magic Pass and a January 2025 r/Switzerland thread describe using the pass for longer Saas-Fee stays and short local mornings. The pass terms and Saas-Fee's winter-versus-summer validity have changed since, so verify the current terms; the operator lists Saas-Fee as included from 31 October 2026.

  • If anyone in the group is only just comfortable on blues, download from Morenia or Felskinn instead of promising them an easy ski home.619

In the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee advice, Beginners' and the 2009 'Saas-fee with family' thread, posters disagree about the overall beginner friendliness but agree that the true blues are disconnected, that run 8 steepens at its end, and that closures can turn the village return into a red.

  • Do not choose accommodation far from the lifts on the assumption that the little electric ski buses will solve the walk.1927

Posters in the 2009 snowHeads thread 'Saas-fee with family' and the alpinforum.com 'Saas-Fee/Saastal 2025-26' thread report that the small electric buses are most likely to be full around the 08:30 opening and the 16:30 closing; accommodation near the nursery slopes or the overnight equipment lockers was more dependable.

  • Do not plan Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell as piste-linked sectors; they require a bus or road transfer and are poor use of a single ski day.1118

An April 2026 r/skiing thread and the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee - completely conflicting reviews!!' confirm that winter buses connect the valley; the operator's price page lists a ski bus between Saas-Almagell and Saas-Fee with the SaastalCard. Older posts report thinner service before the season starts, so check the timetable.

  • Snowboarders should not reject Saas-Fee solely because of the glacier drag lifts: plan a chair-and-gondola circuit and accept that reaching the highest Allalin terrain requires a T-bar.22

In a February 2026 r/snowboarding thread titled 'Snowboarding in Saas-Fee, Switzerland with t-bar phobia', riders said most or all lower terrain can be covered without drag lifts, with some differences over whether every connector can always be avoided.

  • On the upper glacier, stay strictly between the piste markers rather than stepping a few metres aside for untouched snow.17

In the December 2021 skipass.com thread 'Saas Fee (Valais) - Présentation', a poster stresses that the heavily crevassed glacier moves and reopens after grooming work, and warns that even two metres beyond the markers can be dangerous.

  • Treat the obvious-looking sidecountry as serious terrain and hire a guide rather than improvising around Spielboden, Längfluh or Felskinn.2122

A January 2021 skipass.com conditions thread flags hidden rocks below Spielboden, very large crevasses to skier's right of Längfluh and quickly tracked lines near Felskinn, and the February 2026 r/snowboarding thread likewise warns riders not to leave groomers without local knowledge.

  • At Felskinn, climb the platform steps before boarding Metro Alpin and take an uphill carriage so you avoid climbing the corresponding stairs after exiting near 3,500 metres.1918

Repeat visitors in the snowHeads threads 'Saas-fee with family' and 'Saas Fee - completely conflicting reviews!!' found the stair climb at Mittelallalin disproportionately tiring at altitude.

  • Before a lift-assisted tour above 3,000 metres, acclimatize, reduce pack weight and be conservative about how piste fitness will transfer to off-piste snow.33

A January 2021 r/Backcountry post, 'Lessons learnt from recent ski tour', describes a fit skier's planned 3,000 to 3,795 m Saas-Fee tour that unravelled through altitude gain, cold, an oversized pack, painful equipment and underestimating off-piste technique.

  • Check MeteoSwiss and the live lift board before committing to the glacier, because upper lifts regularly wind-hold and the whole network can close during severe snow or avalanche-control days.2022

A February 2016 snowHeads trip report ('Saas Fee Feb 2016') met several upper-lift wind closures and days when the entire system stopped, and a February 2026 r/snowboarding thread recommends MeteoSwiss over foreign weather services.

  • On clear December and January days, save west-facing Plattjen for the afternoon rather than skiing it first.71834

An r/skiing thread from March 2023, the snowHeads thread 'Saas Fee - completely conflicting reviews!!' and a Liftlines trip report from 27 March 2026 say the village gets very little direct midwinter sun and identify Plattjen as the sector that catches later light; the March report used it for a final 15:30 lap to the village.

  • After a small föhn-blown snowfall or when upper visibility is poor, test the Längfluh–Spielboden–village line before following everyone to Morenia or Plattjen.35

A January 2026 alpinfans.com post on the Saastal 2025/26 thread says the Längfluh to Spielboden to village line received almost no new snow and became the best afternoon piste, while Morenia and Plattjen held more windblown accumulation; it adds that the Längfluh cable runs roughly every 15 minutes.

Questions

How many piste kilometres does Saas-Fee have?

The operator's own map gives 100 km for Saas-Fee and 150 km for the whole Saastal, which adds Saas-Grund (34 km), Saas-Almagell (15 km) and Saas-Balen (1 km). Skiresort.com lists 101 km for Saas-Fee. Our routing measurement of the connected Saas-Fee network finds 44.9 km of marked piste, with the shortfall in red and black pistes.123634

Only as far as the village entrance. Saas-Fee is car-free, so visitors park in the car park at the village entrance and walk or take the small electric buses. Without a car, PostAuto line 511 runs from Visp station every 30 minutes.29

Route Saas-Fee as it skis today

SkiAllDay solves a way across the whole lift and piste network: held to the grade you actually want to ski, around whatever is closed, with the other ways round alongside it. Then it matches your day back to the runs and lifts you took.
