Routable 3D map
The whole lift and piste network of Andermatt–Sedrun is routable in the app: difficulty limits, live lift and piste status, alternative ways to the same place, and a 3D view of the terrain.
Open in SkiAllDayThe verdict
Andermatt–Sedrun is a Vail Resorts-operated Swiss ski area that links Andermatt's Nätschen and Oberalp slopes to Sedrun over the Oberalp Pass, plus the separate Gemsstock massif reached by its own cable car straight from Andermatt village. The two together are what the operator calls SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun: over 120 km of piste between 1,444 m and 2,961 m. A joint ticket with the neighbouring, separately run Disentis resort markets roughly 180 km as one area, but Disentis is reached by cable car or train, not by piste.1
Goes well for
- Confident intermediates and freeriders drawn to Gemsstock's long, north-facing red and black terrain
- Skiers on the Epic Pass, since Vail Resorts operates the lift company
- Travellers without a car: Andermatt sits on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn
Goes badly for
- Absolute beginners: most terrain sits above the treeline and the resort's nursery slopes are small and split from the main lift network
- Anyone wanting Disentis in the same day without a long linkup: it takes a cable car or train, not a piste, to get there
- Skiers chasing the marketed 180 km figure on piste alone: our own measurement of the two piste-linked sectors is well under half that

Marketed vs measuredThis page covers SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun as the operator itself scopes it: the piste-linked Nätschen–Gütsch–Oberalp–Sedrun network plus the separate Gemsstock massif, both run by Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG and sold on one ticket, together over 120 km of piste between 1,444 m and 2,961 m. Our own routing graph, built from OpenStreetMap, measures 44.2 km of groomed piste on the Nätschen–Oberalp–Sedrun side and 17.0 km on Gemsstock — 61.2 km in total — because it counts graded piste only, not the extensive off-piste and ski-route terrain the operator's figure includes (the operator alone states 34 km of piste on Gemsstock against our 17.0 km, and Gemsstock's reputation is built on ungroomed terrain like the Guspis descent). Gemsstock has no piste link to the rest of the area: it is reached by its own two-stage cable car from Andermatt village, not by skiing across from Nätschen or Oberalp. The graph also finds two much smaller pieces near Sedrun that connect to neither sector — 1.6 km of piste and lift, plausibly the small Valtgeva family area the operator lists a kids' restaurant at, and a related 2.1 km fragment of ski-tagged track with no piste or lift of its own — together under 2 km and not folded into the headline figure. Disentis is not piste-linked to Sedrun at all: Bergbahnen Disentis AG is a different lift company, reached from Sedrun by the Salins–Cungeri–Cuolm da Vi cable car (opened 2019) or by a shuttle train, and its slopes are not in this page's graph. The joint SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ticket markets all three as roughly 180 km on one pass — that is the ticket that covers more, and it is the right choice for a visitor planning to ski Disentis too, but it describes three separate lift networks, not one you can ski across.
Lifts 22 5 types in the fleet

Operator's own count of 22 covers SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun only (Gemsstock included, Disentis excluded). The by-type breakdown below, also from the operator, sums to 23 because its 3 gondolas include the two-section Gütsch-Express (Andermatt–Nätschen and Nätschen–Gütsch), which our routing graph stores as one continuous line. The joint Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ticket covers 33 lifts once Disentis's own network is added.1

The mountain
These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 September 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.
Piste km per lift km
1.46
Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.
measuredLift minutes per ski hour
43 min
Time riding up for every hour spent descending, from the graph’s own traversal times.
measuredLongest continuous descent
11.9 km
The longest run of linked pistes that never rides a lift.
measuredReachable on easy runs only
45%
Share of piste a skier can reach from the base without ever descending something harder than an easy run.
measuredNorth-facing terrain
37%
Piste facing N, NE or NW, from the bearing of each descent. Shaded aspects hold snow longest.
measuredVertical on that descent
1,557 m
measuredUphill on surface lifts
12%
Share of climbing served by drag lifts and platters, weighted by vertical rather than by lift count.
measuredPiste above 2,500 m

measuredMedian piste altitude
2,112 m
Half the piste length lies above this height and half below, weighted by length.
measuredSkiers per piste km
128
At full lift capacity — a ceiling for comparing resorts, not a forecast of your day. Derived from uphill capacity, lift ride times and the split between riding and descending.
measuredAverage lift capacity
1,778/h
People per hour, averaged across lifts. High can mean short queues, or a lot of people arriving on the same runs.
measuredMean piste gradient
21%
Length-weighted across every piste. Comparable between countries in a way that piste colour is not.

Guide
The area splits into two pieces that share a ticket and a village but not a piste: Nätschen–Gütsch–Oberalp–Sedrun, a lift-linked network running east from Andermatt over the Oberalp Pass, and Gemsstock, a separate massif reached by its own cable car straight from the village. Plan a day around one or the other rather than trying to link them on skis.
For beginners
This is not an easy resort to learn on. Most terrain sits above the treeline on open, wind-exposed slopes, and the small nursery area at Valtgeva, near Sedrun, is not connected by piste to the main lift network. A first-timer's day involves more transfers than at a resort with base-area beginner slopes.13
For intermediates
The Nätschen–Oberalp–Sedrun side is the gentler half, with wide, south-facing cruising on the Andermatt side and long red runs down toward Milez and Sedrun. Gemsstock's reds are longer and steeper than the name suggests — a community report from a competent North American intermediate described being nervous on sections of them.45
For experts
On-piste black terrain is modest for the resort's reputation. The Bernhard-Russi Run at Gemsstock, named for the Swiss downhill champion, is the signature piste, but forum reports describe it as icy and wind-scoured as often as it is good, with red piste 70 and the Lutersee piste sometimes the better summit descents on a given day.16
Freeride and ski touring
This is what Gemsstock is actually known for. The north-facing mountain holds snow into May, and the ungroomed Guspis descends around its back toward Hospental — a point-to-point outing that needs a climb back to a col and a bus or taxi from the valley road, not a lift-served lap. Treat everything beyond the marked piste as unpatrolled high-alpine terrain and hire a guide unless a group is self-sufficient on glaciated ground.789
Snow reliability
Gemsstock's north aspect is the resort's insurance policy: it is shaded most of the day and skis on into spring after the sunnier Nätschen–Oberalp side has gone soft. The trade-off is exposure — almost all the terrain sits above the treeline, so an active snowfall day can mean flat light and whiteout rather than sheltered skiing.51011
| Skier | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong intermediate / advanced | excellent | Gemsstock's north-facing pistes and the Bernhard-Russi Run give real vertical and consistently colder snow.6 |
| Freerider | excellent | Gemsstock's off-piste, including the Guspis, is the reason the mountain has a reputation beyond its piste count.7 |
| Improving intermediate | good | Wide cruising on the Nätschen–Oberalp side; Gemsstock's reds run longer and steeper than elsewhere.4 |
| Non-skiers | good | Andermatt village, the Schöllenen Gorge railway and the Gotthard Pass history are all reachable without skis.1 |
| Expert on-piste | fair | Marked black mileage is limited; most of what draws strong skiers here is off the groomed piste.1 |
| Families | fair | The Valtgeva kids' area sits apart from the main lift network, and much of the terrain is high and exposed.13 |
| First-timer | poor | Terrain is mostly above the treeline and the one small nursery area is not linked to the main network.13 |
By car
Andermatt is reached year-round through the Gotthard Road Tunnel, from Göschenen in the north or Airolo in the south — the Gotthard and Oberalp passes themselves close for winter. The Gemsstock base has limited paid parking (Parkingpay / Twint) at the village edge.
By train
Andermatt station is on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, reached by a short branch line up the Schöllenen Gorge from Göschenen, which sits on the main Gotthard line. Sedrun and Disentis are on the same railway further east.
Where to base yourself
| Andermatt | Village base for Nätschen/Gütsch and for the Gemsstock cable car |
|---|---|
| Sedrun 15 km | Cheaper base on the Graubünden side, at the east end of the linked piste network |
| Göschenen 10 km | One train stop below Andermatt; quieter and cheaper, but shuts down early in the evening |

What skiers say
-
For a powder or limited-opening weekend at Gemsstock, aim for the base around 07:30 rather than 08:00, because the first section sometimes loads before its nominal 08:30 start and an 08:00 arrival has already meant waiting several cabins.13
A November 2024 report calls the 60-person Andermatt–Gurschen tram the mountain's enduring bottleneck; operating times vary, so confirm the published schedule.
-
Put Gemsstock on a weekday when possible, especially after fresh snow, because one discussion reported four or five summit cabins of waiting on Sunday but walk-on access Monday.144
A season-long instructor in a newer thread likewise identified Gemsstock as the resort's main source of serious queues.
-
After each Gemsstock tram unloads, either clip in immediately or wait roughly five minutes for the wave to disperse instead of skiing in its middle.10
A four-day trip report found that this produced nearly empty pistes; its quieter repeat-lap option was the Lutersee surface lift.
-
If finishing on the connected side, reach the Gütsch Flyer before the closing rush rather than making it your last-minute return lift.4
A resident ski instructor said the only consistently long queue outside Gemsstock was at the Gütsch Flyer near the end of the day.
-
A low-friction car-free setup is to stay in Göschenen, commute by train and leave skis and boots in the Gleis 0 lockers at Andermatt station.4
The skier recommending this warns that Göschenen is very quiet after dark, so eat or shop in Andermatt before taking the train back.
-
Set up Parkingpay before driving to the Gemsstock base, because recent visitors found no barrier and only a Parkingpay number plus a Twint QR code.1516
Twint is inconvenient for many foreign visitors; reports conflict on whether a physical terminal still exists, with one skier recalling a well-hidden terminal two years earlier.
-
To transfer from Gemsstock to Gütsch, take the Dorf branch of the valley run to the Brücke stop, then use bus 421 to Oberwiler or bus 423 to the Gütsch Express base.6
Walking from Brücke to the lift takes about ten minutes; these route numbers were reported for 2025/26 and should be rechecked against the current timetable.
-
On a cold clear midwinter day, use south-facing Nätschen–Oberalp for sunshine and save north-facing Gemsstock for preserved snow.510
A January report found Gemsstock almost continuously shaded, while a spring report abandoned the sunny side when its snow deteriorated and stayed on Gemsstock instead.
-
On the Sedrun side, lap the Milez descent before rushing west through the Oberalppass–Gütsch link.17
A German-language trip report called Milez excellent and worth immediate repeats, but found much of the westward connection short or dominated by traverses.
-
When the Bernhard-Russi Run is wind-scoured or icy, try red piste 70 or the Lutersee piste before writing off Gemsstock.6
In February 2026, a skier found the Russi entrance brutally slick while piste 70 was the best summit descent and Lutersee skied well; this is condition-specific, not a permanent ranking.
-
Inspect the right-hand branch after the middle steep pitch of the Bernhard-Russi Run before committing to it.5
A January 2020 skier found that branch reduced to an unprepared, one-groomer-wide ice channel and regretted choosing it over the left branch; conditions can of course reverse.
-
If skiing two or more separate days, price the resort's CHF 69 half-price pass before buying ordinary day tickets.18
A 2025/26 discussion reported CHF 45 day tickets when booked by midnight the previous day and said the pass paid for itself on the second day; verify the current season's deadlines and ticket rules.
-
Use the Andermatt Coop for breakfast, drinks and pocket food instead of automatically buying every meal on the mountain.1920
Recent visitors explicitly used Coop snacks to offset expensive resort food, while another Andermatt discussion priced a supermarket breakfast at under CHF 5 per person in 2023.
-
At the arena's self-service restaurants, ask whether a half portion is available and request tap water.5
A German trip report found free tap water, many regional products and genuinely reduced half portions, such as one schnitzel instead of two.
-
For a better-value evening meal and après atmosphere, check the bar menu at The River House before booking its full restaurant menu.10
A 2016 report found the bar unusually good value for Switzerland and preferred it to exploring elsewhere, although prices and the format may have changed.
-
Consider sleeping in Sedrun rather than Andermatt when accommodation cost matters, but budget the transfer time if Gemsstock is your priority.21
A repeat Gemsstock visitor described Sedrun as cheaper; competent skiers can cross to Andermatt, but the village transfer still takes roughly five minutes by bus or fifteen minutes on foot.
-
Do not treat Andermatt–Disentis as a casual out-and-back, because one-way travel has taken about four hours even without lift queues.1911
Reports mention flat connectors, uphill walking, surface lifts and cable cars running at roughly 15-minute intervals; ski it one way with a rail return or dedicate separate days to each end.
-
Verify whether the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn segment you need is included in your exact pass before deliberately ending the day in another village.222318
Discussions conflict by season and product: a 2019 lift ticket included the return train, a 2022 visitor warned that it cost extra, and a 2025/26 commenter described rail coverage with a particular discounted ticket.
-
Do not trust the interactive piste status alone during limited early-season operations.13
In November 2024, Lara-Gut-Run and Österreicherloch were marked open while grooming was still underway and actually opened almost two hours later; check the webcam and signs at the base.
-
North American intermediates should not assume Gemsstock's red pistes are gentle cruising terrain.45
A competent visitor reported being nervous on sections of the reds and described the blacks as much more serious, while German reports repeatedly call the mountain long, steep and demanding.
-
Avoid committing to Andermatt on an active snowfall day if poor visibility bothers you, because nearly all of its skiing is above the tree line.111024
Multiple visitors describe whiteout, vertigo or losing terrain definition; flexible skiers recommend booking late enough to see the forecast.
-
Carry the rail timetable when crossing Oberalppass, because wind or mechanical holds can sever the lift link during the afternoon.65
A February 2026 party lost the Oberalp Flyer and joined a busy 16:00 train back to Dieni; an older German report likewise treats the railway as the dependable fallback between Andermatt, Oberalp and Sedrun.
-
For late March, make the decision from recent snowfall and freezing levels rather than assuming the entire linked resort shares Gemsstock's snow preservation.1911
One late-March report found mashed-potato snow low down and heavy chopped powder higher up, while another skier found March 24 nearly perfect after fresh snow and cold temperatures.
-
Treat terrain beyond the pistes as uncontrolled high-alpine backcountry and hire a local guide unless your group has the avalanche, glacier and navigation skills to be self-sufficient.914
Discussions specifically characterize Gemsstock terrain as potentially glaciated and high-consequence with no general avalanche control, despite its easy lift access.
-
With a guide and suitable conditions, put Felsental high on the list because it descends from near the Gemsstock summit almost directly back to Andermatt village.10
A four-day trip report singled it out as the standout valley route rather than just another short lap beside the pistes.
-
Plan Guspis as a point-to-point outing: descend the Gemsstock backside, climb roughly 30 minutes to Gafallenlücke and finish near the closed Gotthard road above Hospental for a bus or taxi return.8
The route description is old, so use a current guide or map and verify snow, protected-area boundaries and the exit rather than following historical tracks.
-
If the objective is Disentis's bootpack-accessible couloirs above the high surface lifts, start the day in Disentis instead of spending most of it traversing from Andermatt.25
An expert snowboard group found Gemsstock and Disentis the two technically worthwhile ends of the arena and regretted consuming a day on the mellower Sedrun–Dieni connection.

Questions
Is Andermatt-Sedrun good for beginners?
Not really. Most of the terrain sits above the treeline on open, wind-exposed slopes, and the one small nursery area, at Valtgeva near Sedrun, is not linked by piste to the main lift network. A first week is better spent somewhere with beginner terrain at the base.13
How much does an Andermatt-Sedrun lift pass cost?
The resort uses dynamic pricing rather than a fixed day price. A main-season 2025/26 walk-up adult ticket was CHF 99, with online rates as low as CHF 45 when booked the day before.2
Is Andermatt-Sedrun on the Epic Pass?
Yes. Vail Resorts owns a 55% stake in Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG and operates the lift company, and the Epic Pass gives unlimited, unrestricted access to Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis.2830
Can you ski from Andermatt to Sedrun?
Yes, on the Nätschen–Gütsch–Oberalp side of the resort, continuously linked by piste since March 2018. Gemsstock, the other half of Andermatt-Sedrun, has no piste link to this side — it is reached by its own cable car from the village.26
Is Disentis included in the Andermatt-Sedrun ski area?
Disentis is a separately operated resort, run by Bergbahnen Disentis AG rather than Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG. It shares a joint ticket and is reached from Sedrun by the Cuolm da Vi cable car or a shuttle train, but there is no piste connecting the two.27
Do you need a car for Andermatt-Sedrun?
No. Andermatt station is on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, reached from the Gotthard main line via a short branch through the Schöllenen Gorge from Göschenen, and Sedrun and Disentis sit further along the same railway.26
