The verdict

Obertauern is a high snow bowl on the Radstadt Tauern pass, with 26 lifts in a ring around the village and a circuit, the Tauernrunde, that takes you round the whole area without repeating a lift or piste. Skiresort.com counts about 100 km of piste between 1,630 and 2,313 m, 61 km of it easy. It suits intermediates and families. Steep terrain is scarce and fog above the tree line is a real problem.1234567

Goes well for

  • Intermediates and growing beginners who want a lot of wide, varied piste: skiresort.com grades 61 km of the 100 km easy and 35 km intermediate
  • Skiers who want to see the whole area in a day: the Tauernrunde circles the village in either direction and can be joined at almost any lift
  • Families: the lifts are around the village, there is a family ski park at the Edelweissbahn and a children's version of the Tauernrunde, and children ski free until their sixth birthday with a parent who holds a pass

Goes badly for

  • Experts: only 4 km of the 100 km is graded difficult, and Gamsleiten 2, the steepest piste, first opened on 19 March in 2024/25 and in early March in 2025/26, according to forum posts
  • Bad weather: almost all the skiing is above the tree line, and a February 2024 forum post describes a whiteout at the Zehnerkar top station the winter before
  • Flexible tickets: a one-day pass is valid in Obertauern only, the partner area Speiereck is added from 1.5 days, and Ski amadé passes are not accepted here

Key facts

Every card opens. The headline number is the answer; underneath is how it was measured and where it came from.

The tourist board and skiresort.com both give the ski area as 1,630 to 2,313 m; the sources do not say which lift stations those two figures belong to. The village figure is the 'Passhöhe 1.738 m' printed beside Obertauern on the operator's 2026/27 piste map. Other pages differ: the tourist board's skiing page gives 1,752 m, and German Wikipedia gives 1,664 and 1,730 m for the two settlement areas. The same map labels higher summits above the lifts, such as Gamskarspitz at 2,411 m and Gurpitscheck at 2,526 m, which are not the top of the lift-served area.

  • Difficult 4km 4%

Marketed vs measuredThe page covers the Obertauern ski area only: the lifts and pistes around the village, which the Tauernrunde links into one circuit. The tourist board gives 'around 100 km' on its piste map page and 'more than 100 km' on its skiing page, and skiresort.com gives 100 km split 61 easy, 35 intermediate and 4 difficult; the lift operator's own pages publish no piste total. The Speiereck area at Mauterndorf and St. Michael, about 15 km away, is a separate ski area that passes of 1.5 days or longer also cover. Its pistes are not counted here.

Lifts 26 5 types in the fleet
  • Chairlift 17
  • Drag lift 5
  • Chairlift and gondola combination 2
  • Gondola 1
  • Magic carpet 1

The operator's live lift list names 26 installations: the Zehnerkar 8-person gondola, two combination lifts with chairs and cabins (Plattenkar and Grünwaldkopf), 17 chairlifts from two-seaters to the 8-seat Seekarspitz, five drag lifts and the Übungslift carpet. The cabins on Zehnerkar, Plattenkar and Grünwaldkopf carry pedestrians down as well as up, and the Edelweissbahn takes pedestrians uphill only. The lifts belong to 11 separate companies that sell one pass through Liftgemeinschaft Obertauern GmbH.2

Obertauern joins the Indy Pass in 2026/27. The pass is sold online only and gives two day tickets, collected at a ticket office in Obertauern.
Night skiing runs on Monday and Thursday from 19:00 to 22:00 on the Edelweissbahn pistes: 20.50 EUR from 19:00 and 18.50 EUR from 20:00 for adults and youths. Passes of 1.5 days or longer include it, one-day tickets do not.

Prices are from the operator's 2026/27 price list, read on 17 October 2026. A one-day pass costs the same in the operator's Season A (26 Dec to 8 Jan and 23 Jan to 2 Apr) and Season B (20 Nov to 25 Dec, 9 to 22 Jan and 3 Apr to 2 May). Youth means born 2008 to 2010 (photo ID required) and child means born 2011 to 2020. Seniors born 1962 or earlier and people with a disability of 70% or more pay 68 EUR for a day. Shorter tickets are cheaper: 2 hours 44 EUR, 3 hours 53 EUR, until 13:00 57 EUR, from 11:00 65 EUR, from 12:00 57 EUR. Every pass is issued on a KeyCard with a 2 EUR deposit that is not in these prices.

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.81

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

This page covers the Obertauern ski area: the 26 lifts around the village on both sides of the B 99. Speiereck, 15 km away, is a separate area that only longer passes include.

A ring of lifts around the village

The lifts surround the village, which is what makes the Tauernrunde work. The operator says you can start it at almost any point in the area and finish where you began, without taking the same lift or piste twice. It runs clockwise as the red Tauernrunde and counter-clockwise as the green one, both signed on the mountain and drawn on the piste map. Wikipedia adds that ski bridges carry the circuit over the B 99. The 2026/27 points table puts the full circuit at 280 points (red) or 282 (green).9104

Mostly easy and intermediate

Skiresort.com splits the roughly 100 km into 61 km easy, 35 km intermediate and 4 km difficult. The red and green of the Tauernrunde mark the direction of travel, and a snowHeads reviews thread reports that both directions mix blue and red pistes. The operator's 'Super Seven' are the seven lifts to its higher top stations (Zehnerkar, Hundskogel, Panorama, Gamsleiten 2, Plattenkar, Schaidberg and Seekareck), which it describes as long, steep and partly technical descents for confident skiers.191112

Gamsleiten 2 and the steep end

Wikipedia describes the piste beside the Gamsleiten 2 chairlift as the steepest in Obertauern and the second steepest in Austria. The lift is not always running. A poster on alpinforum.com wrote on 19 March 2025 that it was officially open for the first time that season, after a brief spell around New Year. In 2025/26 a post of 1 December 2025 lists it as shut while nearly everything else was open, and a post dated 2 March 2026 says it had opened that weekend. Check the operator's live lift list before building a day around it.10762

Above the tree line

Almost all the skiing sits above the tree line between 1,630 and 2,313 m, so there is little to read the terrain by in flat light. On alpinforum.com on 10 February 2024 a poster described a whiteout at the Zehnerkar top station, from the previous winter, as frightening. A storm-day report of 11 February 2024 in the same thread found the Seekarspitz and Seekareck sectors pointless and the skiing better below about 2,000 m, on lower Zehnerkar and the Grünwaldkopf valley piste 8e.35

Beginners and children

Children's terrain is spread around the area. The Bibo Bär family ski park is at the Edelweissbahn, Bobby Land at Schaidberg has a wave piste, a slalom and a 30 m wooden ghost-train tunnel, and the Monsterpark Kehrkopf is for older children. The operator also publishes a shortened Tauernrunde for children, the Bobby-Runde, and a My Track course of slalom and speed sections for older ones. Children ski free up to their sixth birthday with a parent who holds a pass. In January 2024 an r/snowboarding reply recommended Zehnerkar for a beginner who is progressing, because it is long and wide, and warned that the Edelweiss slope gets busy.139414

One pass, eleven lift companies

The 26 lifts belong to 11 companies, among them Gebrüder Krings Bergbahnen, Tauernlift GmbH and Obertauern Seilbahn GmbH & CoKG, and Liftgemeinschaft Obertauern GmbH is the shared office that sells the pass. Tickets of one day or less are valid in Obertauern only. From 1.5 days a ticket also covers Speiereck at Mauterndorf and St. Michael. Wikipedia lists the Lungo Skipass and the Salzburg SuperSkiCard as valid here and the Ski amadé pass as not valid.15410

SkierVerdictWhy
Intermediate cruiser excellent 96 of the 100 km are graded easy or intermediate, 26 lifts sit around the village, and the Tauernrunde strings a long day together without repeating a piste.129
First-timer good Skiresort.com grades 61 km of the piste easy, and the operator runs three children's areas, a practice lift (the Übungslift) and a shortened Bobby-Runde. The Edelweiss slope gets busy, according to an r/snowboarding reply.11314
Family with children good Children up to their sixth birthday ski free with a pass-holding parent, and the Bibo Bär park, Bobby Land and the children's Tauernrunde are on the lift system itself.1349
Advanced skier fair Only 4 km is graded difficult. The Super Seven lifts and the Zehnerkar red pistes give the best terrain, and Gamsleiten 2, the steepest piste, first opened on 19 March in 2024/25 and in early March in 2025/26.11276
Budget skier fair An adult day ticket is 72 EUR in 2026/27 and covers Obertauern only. The 3-hour ticket (53 EUR) and the night-skiing ticket (from 20.50 EUR, Monday and Thursday) cost less.416
Spring skier fair The operator plans lifts until 2 May 2027. Early April 2026 posts on alpinforum.com describe sticky slush from midday, stones across the area, and Kehrkopf piste 7b and Sonnenlift 3 closing by 9 April.176

By car

From the north, take the A10 Tauern motorway to Radstadt (exit 63) and the B 99 over the pass; the tourist board gives two hours from Munich. From the south, leave the A10 at St. Michael (exit 104) and drive through Mauterndorf. The lift car parks are closed from 22:00 to 07:00, camper vans included, and only P2 (Zehnerkar) and P7 (Schaidberg) take coaches.

By train

The nearest station is Radstadt, about 20 km away, with Postbus or taxi on from there. In 2026/27 a valid ski pass (not a season or points card) gives free bus travel across the Lungau and from Obertauern to Radstadt between 08:00 and 18:30. Season-pass and points-card holders ride free between their lodging and the lifts while dressed to ski. From 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027 a free Village Shuttle runs inside Obertauern only.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 17 October 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • On a busy day, be on the first lift and finish your best laps before about 09:30.6

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2025/26 thread (28 November 2025) found everything calm when Grünwaldkopf opened at 08:20, a traffic jam in the village an hour later, and the pistes tight from about 09:30 to 10:00, with waits mostly short. Another post (1 December 2025) found the Schaidberg car park access backed up to the B 99 by 08:30.

  • When the Tauernrunde lifts queue, lap Zentralbahn, Sonnenlift, Monte Flu or Kehrkopf instead.5

In the alpinforum.com 2023/24 thread a poster on 11 February 2024 recalled Carnival week the year before: Zentralbahn and Sonnenlift almost always without a wait, Monte Flu and Kehrkopf even emptier. A post of 13 February 2024 puts the longest waits at Edelweissbahn, with Kringsalm and Plattenkar sometimes busy.

  • On a limited-terrain opening weekend, be in the car park before 09:00 with your pass already bought.6

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2025/26 thread describes 23 November 2025, with four lifts open: the Grünwaldkopf, Zehnerkar and Sonnenlift car parks were full by 09:00, Gamsleiten and Plattenkar by 09:45, and buying a season pass at Grünwaldkopf took about 40 minutes.

  • In warm March weather, ski Seekareck, Sonnenlift and Zentralbahn in the morning and move to the north-facing Zehnerkar reds after lunch.6

A trip report of 10, 11 and 13 March 2026 on alpinforum.com found every sunny slope bumped and slushy from midday, the Zehnerkar north slopes holding best, and the Grünwaldkopf valley piste and afternoon Plattenkar pistes the worst.

  • In April, expect stones and early closures at the edges of the area.6

Posts on alpinforum.com from 7 to 10 April 2026 report sticky slush after midday, stones on pistes across the area, and Kehrkopf piste 7b and Sonnenlift 3 closing around 9 April, with the Tauernrunde planned to run to 19 April.

  • Approaching from Radstadt or Untertauern, park at Zehnerkar; from Tweng or the Lungau, stop at Schaidberg.1819

Posters in an April 2018 alpinforum.com thread on Saturday parking recommended these two as the entry points that save driving through the resort. The operator confirms P2 (Zehnerkar) and P7 (Schaidberg) as the two car parks that take coaches.

  • Drive up to Obertauern itself instead of parking in Untertauern.20

A January 2024 thread in r/Salzburg warns first-timers not to park in the valley expecting a gondola connection, and says the day-skier car parks are a few hundred metres from a lift.

  • If the obvious car parks are full, try both sides of Seekarstrasse between the Ringstrasse junction and the crossing of piste 16d above Zentralbahn.5

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2023/24 thread (16 February 2024) parked there shortly after 10:00 and notes the spaces carry the usual ban on overnight parking and are not marked on the piste map.

  • For a progressing beginner on a snowboard, use the Zehnerkar gondola and its blue pistes rather than staying at the Edelweissbahn.14

A reply in a January 2024 r/snowboarding thread calls Zehnerkar long and wide enough for progression and says the Edelweiss slope gets very busy.

  • On a low-cloud new-snow day, try Grünwaldkopf piste 8e, Zehnerkar 1d or 1b, and Sonnenlift 15a or 15b before the crowded 8a.5

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2023/24 thread (11 February 2024) found 8e lightly used with better visibility lower down, firm ground under 1d and little traffic at Sonnenlift, while 8a was crowded slush and new-snow chop.

  • When Gamsleiten 2 is shut, strong skiers can lap the Schaidberg black piste and the Zehnerkar reds.7

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2024/25 thread, with Gamsleiten 2 shut, skied the Schaidberg descent 15 times, found pleasant space on the few black pistes against crowding on the usual blues, and called Zehnerkar's variants the remaining alternative for strong skiers.

  • Use a points card only on a day with few lift rides.214

A January 2025 thread in r/skithealps worked out that a day pass paid for itself at about 11 rides a day on the higher-point lifts. The 2026/27 operator list charges 67 points for Zehnerkar and 15 for Hochalm.

  • Before buying points for a partial day, compare the timed tickets.422

    The operator's 2026/27 list has 2-hour (44 EUR), 3-hour (53 EUR), until-13:00 (57 EUR) and from-11:00 (65 EUR) adult tickets. A February 2024 alpinforum.com post also points to these timed options.

  • Book the Pernerei for dinner in the village, and choose Dikt'n Alm on the hill if farm-sourced meat matters to you.23

A January 2026 r/skithealps thread recommends both, and warns that the Pernerei is small enough to need a reservation.

  • For a straightforward lunch on the piste, try Schaidbergstüberl at the Schaidberg base or Sonnhof/Sonnenalm.67

A trip report of 10 to 13 March 2026 on alpinforum.com recommends Schaidbergstüberl by the Schaidberg valley station, and a poster in the alpinforum.com 2024/25 thread says Sonnhof/Sonnenalm gives a good balance of quality and price.

  • Do not read the red and green Tauernrunde as difficulty grades.911

The operator defines red as clockwise and green as counter-clockwise, and a snowHeads reviews thread reports that both directions mix blue and red pistes.

  • Check Gamsleiten 2 on the live lift list before planning a steep day around it.762

In 2024/25 an alpinforum.com post says it first opened officially on 19 March 2025. In 2025/26 a post of 1 December 2025 lists it as shut and one of 2 March 2026 says it had opened that weekend. An April 2026 post found very little snow at the start of its last pitch.

  • Do not take the Plattenkar cabins as a sign of beginner terrain.5

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2023/24 thread (15 February 2024) calls the Plattenkar sector almost entirely red and black, apart from the traverse towards the Edelweisshütte, and not the usual goal of beginner groups.

  • Do not assume a Ski amadé pass covers Obertauern.10

Wikipedia lists the Lungo Skipass and the Salzburg SuperSkiCard as valid in Obertauern and the Ski amadé network pass as not valid.

  • Treat low cloud as an operational problem, because almost the whole area is above the tree line.5

A poster in the alpinforum.com 2023/24 thread (10 February 2024) describes a frightening whiteout at the Zehnerkar top station the winter before, and says the lack of trees leaves no orientation points in fog.

  • When cloud caps the upper mountain, skip Seekarspitz and Seekareck and ski below roughly 2,000 m.5

On a storm day (11 February 2024), two attempts at those sectors were pointless, while lower Zehnerkar and Grünwaldkopf piste 8e skied better. Another poster in the thread found Zauchensee clearly better than Flachau in a foggy week.
