The verdict

Nassfeld is the largest ski area in Carinthia, on the Italian border above Tröpolach, with lifts from about 600 m to 2,002 m and mostly red pistes. The operator markets 110 km of piste. Its own piste list adds up to 71.8 km and our measurement of the connected network finds 70.8 km. The 7.6 km Carnia valley descent is the longest run. Beginner terrain is a handful of small practice areas.12345678

Goes well for

  • Confident intermediates: the operator's own piste list grades about four fifths of its listed length medium, and the 7.6 km Carnia descent runs from the pass down to Tröpolach
  • Families who want ski-school terrain at several bases: practice areas at Tröpolach, Sonnenalpe Nassfeld and the Tressdorfer Alm, and a family rule that gives the third child a free ticket
  • Skiers who can pick their days: snowHeads and alpinforum posters say southerly storms can bring Nassfeld snow while northern Austria stays dry

Goes badly for

  • First-timers who want to explore: our measurement finds only 14% of the piste network reachable without leaving easy terrain
  • Advanced skiers: the operator's piste list shows a single black piste, the 2.1 km Trogkofelabfahrt, against the 11 km of difficult piste in the marketed figure, and the measured mean gradient is 20%
  • A full week for strong skiers: posters on r/Italia and snowHeads found the red terrain repetitive after two or three days
  • Late-season snow: the top lift station is at about 2,000 m, and a snowHeads thread warns that the area's extensive east- and west-facing slopes soften early in a warm spring

Skiresort.de gives 600 m at the base and 2,002 m at the top; the German Wikipedia article gives 610 m to 2,020 m, and our graph's single network runs from 613 m to 1,999 m. The operator's own pages do not publish altitudes, so the skiresort.de figures are used. The Nassfeld pass itself, where the border runs, is at 1,530 m.

Marketed vs measuredThe operator advertises 110 km of piste in blue, red and black, and skiresort.de repeats it with a split of 30 km easy, 69 km medium and 11 km difficult. The operator's own live piste list is much shorter: its 40 numbered pistes add up to 71.8 km, graded 12.6 km easy (13 pistes), 57.2 km medium (26 pistes) and 2.1 km difficult (one piste), which we summed ourselves. Our measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 70.8 km in a single connected area, close to the operator's list. We could not trace the other 38 km of the marketed figure to any published source, so both numbers are shown. The split used for the easy, medium and difficult cells is the marketed one, and it differs from the operator's own list.

Lifts 29 0 types in the fleet

The operator counts 29 lifts and cable cars; skiresort.de counts 30. No current breakdown by type is published in one place: the German Wikipedia list (five 15-seat gondolas, five six-seat and three four-seat high-speed chairlifts, one fixed four-seat chairlift, 15 drag lifts) predates the new Tröglbahn and Gartnerkofelbahn, so it is not used. The Millennium-Express runs in three sections from Tröpolach and is 6,001 m long, the longest cable car in Austria according to Wikipedia.1

Carinthian ski pass (Kärntner Skipass): 840 euros adult in presale, 884 euros after; the operator says it covers 24 ski areas in Carinthia and seven in East Tyrol.
Multi-day tickets in high season: 2 days 143 euros, 6 days 381 euros, 7 days 414 euros for an adult.
Family rule: the third and later child gets a free ticket when a family buys at least two full-price adult day tickets and two youth or child tickets, for children born up to 2011.
Night skiing: select slopes are floodlit on Saturdays in January and February for 10 euros (5 euros for a child), free with a Nassfeld season ticket.

From the operator's 2026/27 price list, high season (25 December 2026 to 13 March 2027), for a day ticket valid from 09:00. Seniors (born 1961 or earlier) pay 65.50 euros. In low season (4 to 24 December and 14 March to 4 April) an adult day ticket is 67.50 euros. Prices fall through the day: from 13:00 an adult pays 51 euros and from 15:00 31 euros. Age groups: adults born 1962 to 2007, youths 2008 to 2011, children 2012 to 2020; children born 2021 or later ski free with a parent on the same lift. A 5 euro deposit is charged for the electronic lift pass. Skiresort.de lists 69.50 euros for an adult day, which does not match the operator's list.

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.46

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

Nassfeld is one connected network on the Carnic ridge, entered from two sides: the Millennium-Express from Tröpolach in the Gail valley and the lifts at the pass itself.

Two ways in, one network

The Millennium-Express rises from Tröpolach in three sections, 6,001 m in total, and reaches the pass area in 17 minutes. The hotel zone at the pass, Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, has its own lifts, among them the Madritschen chairlift, the Trögl chairlift and the Gartnerkofel gondola. Skiresort.de also lists sub-areas at Sonnleitn and the Tressdorfer Alm. Our measurement finds all of it joined into a single network of 70.8 km between 613 m and 1,999 m, with no second sector.1043

The Italian border

The border runs along the pass, and OpenStreetMap tags the ski area to both Austria and Italy. The German Wikipedia article states that all lifts are on the Carinthian side, and a plan for a feeder cable car from Pontebba was halted in 2017. Skiresort.de notes that skiers can have lunch on Italian soil at the pass, and the operator describes the area as only a lift ride from Italy. No lift is on the Italian side, so this page treats Nassfeld as an Austrian area.10143

110 kilometres against 71

The marketed 110 km is not what the pistes add up to. The operator's live list has 40 pistes totalling 71.8 km, and our graph finds 70.8 km. The grading differs as well: the marketed split is 30 km easy, 69 km medium and 11 km difficult, while the list has 12.6 km easy, 57.2 km medium and one 2.1 km difficult piste, the Trogkofelabfahrt (75). Plan on about 71 km of piste and a mountain that is mostly red.123

The Carnia valley descent

The Carnia descent, piste 80, is listed as two medium sections of 5.4 km and 2.2 km, a combined 7.6 km. Our measurement finds the longest run of linked pistes at 7.1 km with 1,209 m of vertical. A November 2025 r/skiing thread warns that the red 80 turns long, mogulled and steep at the finish, and a snowHeads thread notes the Millennium-Express also runs downhill to Tröpolach for skiers who prefer not to ski it.23118

Where the easy terrain is

The operator's list has 13 easy pistes, 12.6 km in all, and most are short practice pistes or Skiweg link paths: the Übungswiese-Nassfeld (22), the Tressdorfer-Alm practice areas (55, 56, 57) and the Eggerboden practice area (53). Our measurement finds only 14% of the piste network reachable from the base without descending something harder than easy. A first-timer should plan on the practice areas at Tröpolach, Sonnenalpe Nassfeld and the Tressdorfer Alm rather than on exploring.23

Race and night pistes

The operator's list names a 3.6 km FIS-Abfahrt (1), a Trainingsstrecke (67) and a Hohe-Höhe-Buckelpiste (62), a bump piste, all graded medium. A 2023 skionline.pl report describes piste 77 as a public giant-slalom course and piste 70 as a speed-check course. Night skiing runs on Saturdays in January and February on select floodlit slopes.2129

Snow and aspect

The operator lists 540 snow guns, and Wikipedia credits Adriatic low-pressure systems from early December to mid-April for much of the snow. The top lift station is only about 2,000 m and the median piste sits at 1,638 m. Our measurement finds 56% of the piste facing north, northeast or northwest. Alpinforum and alpinfans trip reports describe corn snow on the east-facing Zweikofel side around 11:00 on spring days and a west-facing Gartnerkofel sector that improves later in the day.11031314

SkierVerdictWhy
Confident intermediate excellent The operator's list grades 57 of its 72 km medium, with long red pistes from the ridge to Tröpolach, and our graph measures 70 minutes of lift riding per hour of skiing.23
Second-week skier good Most of the area is medium-graded at a measured 20% mean gradient, and the 7.6 km Carnia descent is within reach once red pistes are comfortable.23
Family with mixed abilities good Practice areas sit at several bases, the Millennium-Express has a mid-station at the Tressdorfer Alm, which has a children's area, and the third and later child skis free when a family buys two adult and two youth or child tickets.29410
First-timer fair Skiresort.de lists beginners among its strengths and there are practice areas at Tröpolach, the Tressdorfer Alm and Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, but only 14% of the network is reachable on easy runs alone, and a November 2025 r/skiing thread warns that the red grading is not beginner terrain.23114
Advanced skier fair The operator's list has one black piste, the 2.1 km Trogkofelabfahrt (75), which alpinfans and alpinforum reports call the best snow on the mountain in good conditions and knobbly or icy after freeze-thaw. Posters on r/Italia and snowHeads found the red terrain repetitive after two or three days.2146
Budget skier fair An adult day ticket costs 73 euros in high season, but prices fall through the day to 51 euros from 13:00 and 31 euros from 15:00, and a snowHeads thread describes Tröpolach as a small settlement with few bars and shops.96

By car

From western Austria take the A10 through the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels (toll) to the Feistritz/Drau exit and follow the signs to Hermagor; from eastern Austria take the A2 to the Hermagor/Gailtal exit and the B111 to Nassfeld. From Italy, leave the motorway at Pontebba for the Passo Pramollo road over the pass, or continue to Tarvisio and exit at Hermagor/Gailtal. An alpinfans report describes traffic backing up from Tröpolach to the main road on 31 December 2025.

By train

The nearest station is Hermagor, reached by the ÖBB S4 from Villach hourly. A winter ski bus runs from the station to the ski area, ending at the Millennium-Express valley station in Tröpolach. A February 2026 alpinforum report found the Hermagor to Tröpolach bus free with ski equipment but the evening bus overcrowded.

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 17 October 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • On peak-holiday days, be at the Millennium-Express before 08:00, even when the published opening time is 08:30.14

On 31 December 2025 traffic reportedly backed up from Tröpolach to the main road, a queue existed by 08:11, and the resort responded by running cabins from roughly 08:00.

  • Use the restaurant rush as piste time, skiing from about 11:00 until 14:00 and taking your own long break afterward.1516

A local trip report found terraces already packed by 11:00 while runs emptied; another specifically recommends postponing lunch until after 14:00 in high season.

  • Prefer weekdays or March over Sundays and February if crowd avoidance matters.5617

A December 2025 r/Italia thread calls Sundays noticeably busy. A snowHeads poster describes February as the crowded month and December, January and March as much quieter. A January 2026 weekday report on Síelők.hu found no lift waits except at the morning Millennium-Express.

  • On spring or freeze-thaw days, start on Trögl, try east-facing Zweikofel and lower Carnia around 11:00, then finish on the west-facing Gartnerkofel sector.131814

Alpinforum trip reports from 2010/11 and 2016/17 and the December 2025 alpinfans thread found Trögl best early, a short corn-snow window at Zweikofel and below Gmanberg around 11:00, and Gartnerkofel improving later; Rudnigsattel can be fully shaded by about 13:15.

  • At the large Tröpolach base car park, accept a distant space and use the circulating parking shuttle instead of walking in ski boots or hunting for the closest row.1920

A January 2019 skionline.pl report describes a small shuttle collecting skiers throughout the car park, and a 2010 skijanje.rs thread also says the parking-area transport was free. Current operation should be checked.

  • If using train and bus, leave a generous connection margin in Hermagor for the return journey.21

A February 2026 skier found the bus between Hermagor and Tröpolach free with ski equipment, but the evening Bus 200 was overcrowded, left passengers behind and missed its S-Bahn connection because departing cars jammed the road.

  • Collect passes at your nearest access point instead of automatically driving to the Millennium-Express base.11

A November 2025 r/skiing reply lists sales at Tröpolach Millennium-Express, Sonnleitn chair, Trögl Skiplatz, the Sonnenalpe Madritschen chair and the Hermagor information centre, with rentals also available at multiple entrances.

  • For a fly-drive trip, compare Ljubljana before accepting a Salzburg package transfer.86

One snowHeads thread reports Salzburg to Tröpolach taking about three hours, while another poster found the roughly 130-kilometre drive from Ljubljana easy. Flight availability can still reverse the choice.

  • When approaching from Pontebba in winter, choose between the short Italian pass road and the longer Austrian approach using current road conditions, not distance alone.22

In a 2009 CamperOnLine thread Italian camper users disagreed: some found the Passo Pramollo road cleared and usable, while another warned of persistent ice near the tunnel and preferred going via Tarvisio and Arnoldstein. The discussion is old, so check conditions before committing.

  • Seek out the less-obvious left-hand piste alongside the Sonnleitn chair when the main sectors are busy.1813

An alpinforum repeat visitor calls it a Nassfeld secret and found fresh grooming marks there at 13:00 in high season. After severe freeze-thaw the same quiet run can remain knobbly with an icy final pitch.

  • Check black piste 75 under Trogkofel early, then lap it when it is chalky or lightly softened rather than assuming its quietness guarantees quality.141513

Alpinfans (February 2026), alpinforum (2012) and an alpinforum 2016/17 report describe it as scarcely tracked and the best snow on the mountain in good conditions, but also as knobbly, icy or hiding rocks beneath thin powder after poor preparation or freeze-thaw.

  • Make the full Carnia valley descent a before-lunch objective, and use the Gmanberg intermediate station for repeat laps of its lower section when conditions are good.231824

DoveSciare.it reviews single out Carnia as the resort's must-ski descent. An alpinforum report found the lower section superb around 11:00 but slushy, bumpy and crowded by late afternoon.

  • On a cold or exposed day, build your circuit around Millennium-Express, Trogkofel and Zweikofel gondolas plus the covered, heated Mössern and Rudnigsattel chairs.24

An alpinforum 2015/16 season thread describes using exactly this combination during strong north wind and severe cold, limiting time on open chairs without giving up much terrain.

  • Use piste 77 for the public giant-slalom course and piste 70 for the speed check if you want a structured technical lap.12

A 2023 report describes the GS as easy but fast, separated with nets and well prepared, with a convenient counter-slope for slowing after the speed course.

  • Do not arrive at Garnitzenalm between 12:00 and 14:00 if maximizing ski time matters.25

Italian reviews report 45-minute waits and abandoned orders during that window, especially over Christmas, although they generally describe the food and staff positively.

  • Use Rudnig Alm when speed and seating matter more than hut atmosphere.26

Reviewers describe ample peak-time seating, fast self-service and moderate prices, but opinions conflict on ambience and food quality, with complaints about loud music and microwave-style fare.

  • Before paying for a full workshop service in the valley, ask Kofelcenter at the Millennium-Express top station about its express service for passholders.19

A 2019 trip report paid €8 for a roughly ten-minute service and considered it unusually good value, but the price is historical and should be checked before relying on it.

  • Buy substantial self-catering supplies in Hermagor before heading up rather than relying on Tröpolach or the pass.8

A snowHeads thread describes Tröpolach as having only a small supermarket, an ATM, a few bars and hotels, so it is adequate for forgotten basics rather than a full week's shop.

  • Do not treat Nassfeld's red grading as beginner-friendly, particularly red 80 Carnia late in the day.11817

A November 2025 r/skiing thread describes only a few short easy learning areas, with red 80 becoming long, mogulled and steep at the finish. It points genuine novices to the Tröpolach base or Tressdorfer Alm teaching areas.

  • Do not leave Sonnenalpe or Sonnleitn until the last moment when your accommodation or transport is in Tröpolach.11

The cross-resort return takes several lifts and more time than the piste map suggests, so establish the day's final connection before committing to another lap.

  • Do not feel obliged to ski Carnia home when tired, visibility is poor or the lower snow has collapsed.8

The Millennium-Express downloads directly to Tröpolach and visitors sometimes found it quicker and easier than the single, circuitous home run.

  • Do not book Tröpolach expecting an Ischgl-style resort town after skiing.627

Two snowHeads threads describe Tröpolach as a tiny settlement with a small shop and only a few bars, although an older thread remembered a lively Cube nightclub and Bärenhütte, so nightlife reports depend on venue and era.

  • Do not assume the advertised kilometre count guarantees a varied full week for a strong skier.568

Posters on r/Italia (December 2025) and two snowHeads threads found the predominantly red terrain enjoyable but repetitive after two or three days, while others thought it sufficient for a week. Mix in a nearby area if variety is central to the trip.

  • In early season, inspect individual piste openings and carry older skis rather than assuming that open main lifts mean complete, stone-free sectors.14

On 31 December 2025 the FIS, Krone, Kanonenrohr and Trogkofel pistes were still closed, and the open Trogkofel, Zweikofel and valley routes contained significant embedded stones; with Trogkofel's black closed, its remaining piste was also overcrowded.

  • Judge Nassfeld from the Adriatic and southern-Alps storm track, not from snowfall reports in Tirol or Salzburg.67

SnowHeads posters and an alpinforum 2011/12 season thread say southerly systems can bury Nassfeld while northern Austria stays dry, and northwest storms can leave it with little fresh snow. One report documented 40 centimetres from a small Adriatic low while much of Carinthia remained bare.

  • Treat March as a sun-management problem rather than automatically writing the resort off for low altitude.8628

Two snowHeads threads and a May 2026 r/skithealps thread split on this: some regulars find early and mid-March reliable because most skiing is at 1,500 to 2,000 metres and the valley run faces north, while others warn that the extensive east- and west-facing terrain softens early in warm springs. Book late if snow quality is non-negotiable.

  • After a hard overnight refreeze, do not automatically chase the emptiest pistes because the busy groomers may become smoother by afternoon.13

A detailed March report found skier traffic breaking up troublesome frozen lumps on popular runs, while quiet favourites at Sonnleitn and Trogkofel remained almost unskiable all day.

Questions

How many piste kilometres does Nassfeld have?

The operator advertises 110 km of piste, but its own live list of 40 pistes adds up to 71.8 km and our measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 70.8 km in one connected area. Skiresort.de repeats the 110 km with a split of 30 km easy, 69 km medium and 11 km difficult. We could not trace the difference to a published source.1243

Is Nassfeld good for beginners?

Only partly. The operator's piste list has 13 easy pistes, 12.6 km in total, mostly short practice areas at Tröpolach, the Tressdorfer Alm and Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, and our measurement finds only 14% of the network reachable without leaving easy terrain. Skiers who have done a week of lessons will find more to ski on the medium pistes.23

How much is a day ticket at Nassfeld in 2026/27?

An adult day ticket valid from 09:00 costs 73 euros in high season (25 December 2026 to 13 March 2027) and 67.50 euros in low season, according to the operator's 2026/27 price list. Youths born 2008 to 2011 pay 55 euros and children born 2012 to 2020 pay 36.50 euros in high season. A 5 euro deposit is charged for the lift pass.9

Is Nassfeld in Austria or Italy?

Nassfeld is a ski area in Carinthia, Austria, directly on the Italian border at the Passo Pramollo, which is the Italian name for the Nassfeld pass. The German Wikipedia article states that all lifts are on the Carinthian side; the pass has Italian restaurants, and a cable car from Pontebba in Italy was planned but halted in 2017.104

How do you get to Nassfeld by train?

Take the ÖBB S4 from Villach to Hermagor, which runs hourly, and then the winter ski bus from the station to the Millennium-Express valley station in Tröpolach. A February 2026 alpinforum report found the evening return bus overcrowded and a connection missed, so leave a generous margin.3121

When is the Nassfeld ski season?

The operator's 2026/27 lift hours and ticket seasons run from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with lifts open 09:00 to 16:00 until 28 February and from 08:30 afterwards. Snow depends partly on Adriatic low-pressure systems, which Wikipedia says arrive from early December to mid-April.32910

Does Nassfeld have night skiing?

Yes, on Saturdays in January and February select slopes are floodlit and a night-skiing ticket costs 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children. It is free with a Nassfeld season ticket. Skiresort.de places the night skiing at Tröpolach.94

How much is a season pass for Nassfeld in 2026/27?

An adult Nassfeld season ticket costs 655 euros in presale until 8 December 2026 and 708 euros afterwards, according to the operator. It also covers the family ski areas Weissbriach and Kötschach-Mauthen, night skiing and a ski-service voucher. The Carinthian ski pass, which the operator says covers 24 ski areas in Carinthia and seven in East Tyrol, is 840 euros presale and 884 euros afterwards.33

Route Nassfeld as it skis today

SkiAllDay solves a way across the whole lift and piste network: held to the grade you actually want to ski, around whatever is closed, with the other ways round alongside it. Then it matches your day back to the runs and lifts you took.
