The verdict

Bad Kleinkirchheim is a Carinthian ski area on two linked sectors, Kaiserburg above the village and St. Oswald to the east, with a thermal spa at the base. The operator markets 103 km of piste, of which 84 km is red and 11 km easy; we measure 67.4 km. The top is 2,055 m, so snow depends heavily on snowmaking.12345

Goes well for

  • Intermediates who want wide red pistes: 84 of the operator's 103 km are red, and our graph finds an 8.2 km descent that never rides a lift
  • Ski days combined with spa days: the same operator runs the Thermal Römerbad, and its Ski + Therme multi-day passes add four hours in the baths
  • Families with young children: a kidsslope, a funline, a snowpark, four ski schools and a ski kindergarten from age 3

Goes badly for

  • Beginners who want to leave the practice slopes: only 11 of 103 km is graded easy, and just 24% of the measured network can be reached on easy pistes alone
  • Reliable spring snow: the top is 2,055 m, half the piste length lies below 1,681 m and nothing is above 2,500 m, so the area relies on snowmaking
  • Skiing between the two sectors: the link from Bad Kleinkirchheim to St. Oswald runs through two slow Sonnwiesen chairs, and a forum visitor needed 1.5 to 2 hours

The operator publishes no elevations in its facts, so the top comes from skiresort.de (2,055 m), which matches the 'Kaiserburg 2055 m' label on the operator's own piste panorama. German Wikipedia gives the Kaiserburgbahn as 1,070 m at the valley station, 1,363 m at the middle station and 2,043 m at the top; the 1,070 m is used as the base. Skiresort.de lists the valley at 1,087 m, which is also Wikipedia's average height for the municipality, so the vertical differs by 17 m between the two.

Marketed vs measuredThe operator markets 103 km over 35 pistes, and skiresort.de gives the same total and the same 11, 84 and 8 km split. Our measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 67.4 km of piste in a single connected sector, so no part of the marketed area is detached; the 35% gap has no geographic cause. About 6.7 km of the measured length is the FIS K70 route, which the operator lists as a natural-snow ski-touring route with no alpine ski operation, so the groomed, lift-served figure is nearer 61 km. The rest of the gap we cannot attribute: operators often measure along the widest extent of a piste, and OpenStreetMap may lack some variants. OpenStreetMap also grades the network differently from the operator, at about 24 km easy, 39 km intermediate and 4 km difficult, with practice slopes and link paths counted as easy.

Lifts 24 4 types in the fleet
  • Drag lift 10
  • Chairlift 8
  • Gondola 4
  • Conveyor carpet 2

The operator counts 24 lifts, of which 4 are gondolas, 8 chairlifts and 12 drag lifts. Bergfex's lift list splits the drag lifts into 10 T-bars and platters and 2 conveyor carpets, and shows three of the eight chairs as two-seaters (Strohsackbahn and Sonnwiesenbahn I and II). The four gondolas are the two stages of the Kaiserburgbahn in Bad Kleinkirchheim, the Biosphärenparkbahn Brunnach in St. Oswald and the Nockalmbahn in Staudach. Our routing graph puts 23% of the climbing, weighted by vertical, on surface lifts.1

The mountain

These figures come from measuring the resort's actual piste and lift network rather than from its brochure. Measured from the SkiAllDay routing graph on 17 October 2026. Where the resort publishes a figure of its own, that figure is the one shown.

Piste km per lift km

1.51

Piste km opened by each kilometre of lift line. It measures how sparse the lift network is, not how good it is: a high figure means long runs off few lifts, so more skiing between rides but more traversing and more people funnelled onto each lift; a low one means dense lift service, quick laps and short waits, at the cost of repeating the same runs.

Guide

Bad Kleinkirchheim stretches along a valley that runs west to east, from the Kaiserburg and Maibrunn lifts at the village end, through the Sonnwiesen chairs in the middle, to the Nockalm and Brunnach gondolas toward St. Oswald. The pistes are wide and mostly red.

Two sectors, one connected network

German Wikipedia describes two ski areas: Kaiserburg/Maibrunn, with two valley stations in the village, and St. Oswald/Nockalm. The operator sells them as one area with five access points, and our measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds a single connected sector of 67.4 km of piste, so nothing in the marketed 103 km is detached. Crossing between the sectors on skis goes through the two slow Sonnwiesen chairs. A February 2023 SkiForum.pl visitor put the trip from Bad Kleinkirchheim to St. Oswald at 1.5 to 2 hours, and found the free ski bus quicker. Alpinforum.com threads from December 2025 and the 2016/17 holidays describe days when the Sonnwiesen lifts ran but the piste linking them was closed.614589

Mostly red, with four black pistes

The operator splits its 103 km into 11 km easy, 84 km intermediate and 8 km difficult. On the operator's panorama the black pistes are the Muldenabfahrt (3), the Buckelpiste Hirschsprung (4), the Weltcupabfahrt (8), which carries the name of Franz Klammer, and the Radentheiner Streif (21). Our measurement puts the length-weighted average gradient at 18%, with 35% of piste length under 10% and 14% steeper than 30%. Only 24% of the network can be reached from the base without descending something harder than an easy piste. A January 2026 Síelők.hu visitor found pistes 1, 7 and 11 unusually steep when hard or icy.210411

Snow depends on snowmaking

The top is 2,055 m and the median piste sits at 1,681 m, with no piste above 2,500 m. Bergfex quotes the operator as saying 97% of the pistes can be snowmade, with about 800 snow guns. Our measurement finds 56% of piste facing north, northeast or northwest, which suits the upper Kaiserburg pistes: a March 2025 Síelők.hu visitor found them frozen and superb while the southern lower pistes softened after noon. An r/skiing thread on a March visit calls the month a year-to-year gamble, contrasting poor valley coverage in 2024 with excellent snow in 2021.31241113

Gondolas up, slow chairs in the middle

Four gondolas carry most of the uphill traffic: Kaiserburgbahn I and II, Biosphärenparkbahn Brunnach and Nockalmbahn. The rest is eight chairlifts, of which Strohsackbahn and Sonnwiesenbahn I and II are two-seaters, and twelve drag lifts including two carpets. Our graph puts lift riding at 97 minutes for every hour of descent. A February 2026 Alpinfans visitor waited about five minutes at Nockalm at 10:00 and found the longest wait of that day at Maibrunn around 11:00.210414

SkierVerdictWhy
Confident intermediate excellent The network is 84 km of wide red pistes, and our graph finds an 8.2 km descent that never rides a lift. Intermediate is the level the area is built around.24
Ski and spa week excellent The Thermal Römerbad is run by the same company as the lifts and has 13 saunas. The Ski + Therme multi-day pass adds four hours in the baths on a ski day, at 280 for three adult days in peak season against 213 for ski only.27
Second-week skier good Most of the network is red at a measured 18% average gradient, and 35% of piste length is under 10%. The long wide pistes suit someone gaining confidence, but pistes 1, 7 and 11 can be steep when hard.2411
Family with young children good The operator lists a kidsslope, a funline, a snowpark, four ski schools and a ski kindergarten from age 3. Toddlers born 2021 or later need a pass at 6 for up to six days, and children get 10% off day tickets when travelling with an adult.17
First-timer fair The area has four practice slopes (Bach, Star, Sonnleiten and St. Oswald), a ski kindergarten from age 3 and a day ticket for the valley practice lifts at 42 for an adult. Beyond them only 11 of 103 km is graded easy, and 24% of the measured network is reachable without a harder piste.151724
Advanced skier fair Black is 8 km of the operator's 103 km and the pistes top out at 2,055 m. The black list includes the Buckelpiste Hirschsprung, a mogul piste by name, and the Weltcupabfahrt Franz Klammer, which our graph measures at about 30% average gradient over 1.8 km. There is little else to progress to.2104
Spring skier poor With a top of 2,055 m and no piste above 2,500 m, the area relies on snowmaking and the operator plans to close on 29 March 2027. An r/skiing thread calls March a gamble from year to year.34713

By car

From Salzburg it is about 170 km and 2:45 h by the A10 Tauern motorway to the Spittal exit, then the B98 and B88. From Munich it is about 300 km and 3:45 h by the A8 and the A10. From Vienna it is about 370 km and 4:15 h by the A2 to Klagenfurt-Nord, then the B95 and B88. From Ljubljana it is about 127 km and 1:40 h. By train

The nearest mainline stations are Spittal-Millstättersee (about 30 km), Villach Hauptbahnhof (about 35 km) and Feldkirchen in Kärnten (about 30 km). From there the operator points to the Nockmobil on-demand service, regional buses or a shuttle. Within the resort the free Ski-Thermen-Bus Line A runs daily from 08:30 to 17:00 and links the five valley stations and the Thermal Römerbad, every 15 minutes in peak season and every 30 minutes otherwise (2025/26 timetable).

What skiers say

Gathered from public discussions, last swept 17 October 2026. Every tip links to the thread it came from.

  • Be at the Biosphärenparkbahn Brunnach by about 08:40 and ride straight on to Spitzeck.177

A February 2026 Alpinfans report saw the Brunnach gondola loading at 08:45, although the operator publishes 09:00 as the start of the operating day. Treat the early loading as one visitor's observation, not a promise.

  • Ski the Wiesernock side before about 10:00 and be off the Nockalmbahn queue before midday.1485

A February 2026 Alpinfans visitor found five minutes at Nockalm at 10:00. The alpinforum.com thread for 2025/26 and a February 2023 SkiForum.pl report put the wait at 5 to 10 minutes, and Priedröf also draws clusters.

  • Schedule Maibrunn before about 10:30 on busy days.14

On a busy day in February 2026 an Alpinfans visitor waited longest at Maibrunn, around 11:00, while most other lifts that day took about a minute.

  • At Christmas and New Year, ride a base gondola once early, then lap Maibrunn, Strohsack, Spitzeck or Scharte instead of returning to Kaiserburg, Brunnach or Nockalm.81811

The holiday reports differ. Posts from December 2025 and December 2024 on alpinforum.com, Alpinfans and Síelők.hu include a Brunnach queue of about 20 minutes at 09:00 and, in another, almost no waiting away from the two base gondolas and Nockalm.

  • If you stay in Bad Kleinkirchheim, take the morning ski bus east to Brunnach and ski back west in the afternoon.519

A February 2023 SkiForum.pl visitor staying four days found the bus much quicker than skiing from Bad Kleinkirchheim toward St. Oswald, which took 1.5 to 2 hours through the two slow Sonnwiesen chairs. In 2025/26 the operator's free Line A linked the five valley stations every 15 minutes in peak season and every 30 minutes otherwise.

  • Use the free lift lots: Brunnach has 230 spaces, Nockalm 250 and Maibrunn 230, with 352 at Römerbad and 190 at Kaiserburg.2011

A February 2025 Síelők.hu visitor found the free lots less than half full. Brunnach suits a St. Oswald-first day, and Maibrunn gives direct access to the western sector.

  • Check the Sonnwiesen pistes as well as the lift status before planning a day across both sectors, and take the bus if the ski link is shut.8921

Alpinforum.com threads from December 2025 and the 2016/17 holidays describe days when the Sonnwiesen lifts ran while the connecting piste was closed or usable only as a lift-assisted transfer. Line A is the fallback between the valley stations.

  • Ski the Wiesernockabfahrt when it is open, and time it to miss the Nockalmbahn queue at the bottom.1422

Alpinfans posters in February 2026 and an alpinforum.com post in January 2026 rate it among the best-snow pistes in the area. The awkward return and the low capacity of the Nockalmbahn keep it quieter.

  • Ski the sunny Brunnach, Spitzeck and St. Oswald pistes on cold December and January mornings, and keep the north-facing Strohsack and Franz Klammer pistes for warm spring afternoons.23178

An alpinforum.com report of 12 March 2011 found Franz Klammer still hard and grippy around 15:00 while sunnier intermediate pistes had softened. Alpinfans and alpinforum.com posts from winter 2025/26 describe the sunny St. Oswald side as the more comfortable one in early winter.

  • Finish on the Millstätter See Bahn and Höhenlift for late laps in the sun.1724

An Alpinfans visitor in January 2026 ended there on purpose because the pistes stayed sunny after others had scraped off. A January 2010 alpinforum.com report found Wiesernock quieter than the sunny Scharte.

  • When wind closes the exposed St. Oswald ridge from the Höhenlift onward, switch to the forested Maibrunn, Strohsack and Kaiserburg sector.189

An Alpinfans visitor in January 2025 found the upper St. Oswald half closed while Maibrunn and the World Cup side kept running. The alpinforum.com report from the 2016/17 holidays also singles out the forested pistes in storms.

  • Ask your accommodation what passes it sells before buying online, and compare an all-Carinthia pass with the local one.117

In February 2026 a Síelők.hu guest was quoted EUR 202 for three days of the local pass, then bought a three-day all-Carinthia pass at reception for EUR 181. That price was specific to the accommodation and to 2025/26; the 2026/27 local three-day adult price is EUR 213 in peak season and EUR 198 off-peak.

  • Compare Ski oder Therme with Ski + Therme before buying a multi-day pass if you want the Römerbad.7

Ski oder Therme lets you use the ski area or the spa on a given day. Ski + Therme adds four hours in the baths on the same day, with the sauna extra. For 2026/27 the adult three-day prices are EUR 213 and EUR 280 in peak season.

  • For self-catering, a Billa and a Spar are about five minutes on foot from the Bachlift area.11

That is a February 2026 report from a Síelők.hu visitor, who also found the ski link from there to Maibrunn less convenient than the map suggests.

  • At the Kaiserburg mountain restaurant, ask whether the set menu is available before ordering à la carte.11

A March 2025 Síelők.hu visitor paid EUR 17 for a main course and dessert, against EUR 6 for a beer and EUR 4 for a coffee. Those are 2025 prices.

  • Do not treat pistes 1, 7 and 11 beside the Kaiserburgbahn and Maibrunnbahn as gentle reds.11

A January 2026 Síelők.hu visitor found these three unusually steep when hard or icy, while a March 2025 poster in the same thread thought many local reds would be blue elsewhere.

  • Do not share an ordinary multi-day pass between parents who take turns with the children.117

In February 2026 Síelők.hu posters reported groups stopped at the gate after photos linked a pass to a different person. The operator states that every ticket is personal and non-transferable, and sells a Jungfamilienticket for families with a non-skiing child under four, as a multi-day ticket at the adult tariff plus about 10%.

  • Do not assume the Bachlift area connects smoothly to the Maibrunnbahn on skis.11

A January 2026 Síelők.hu guest found the route blocked by the busy practice area and an asphalt road, so walking or heavy poling was needed.

  • Respect a closed Sonnwiesen piste even when most of it looks groomed from the lift.8

In December 2025 an alpinforum.com poster described a piste that looked finished but was officially closed because one traverse had narrowed to roughly one piste-machine track.

  • Keep March plans flexible and judge conditions by the piste report rather than resort-wide snow depth.1311

An r/skiing thread on a March visit calls the month a year-to-year gamble, contrasting poor valley coverage in 2024 with excellent conditions in 2021. A March 2025 Síelők.hu visitor found superb frozen north-facing pistes but soft southern lower pistes after noon.

  • Bring sharp edges after a warm day and a cold night, and leave lower Sonnwiesen once it is polished.111817

Síelők.hu posts from February 2024 and Alpinfans posts from January 2025 and January 2026 describe thin machine-made surfaces turning icy despite modest traffic, with the north-facing upper Kaiserburg pistes staying firm longer.

  • Treat the outer Mulde and other natural-snow variants as bonus terrain until real snow arrives.188

An Alpinfans visitor in January 2025 found only the central Muldenlift piste open, with stones showing and the outer lines unavailable. The December 2025 alpinforum.com thread also notes bare ground beside open pistes.

Questions

How big is the Bad Kleinkirchheim ski area, and is it one area?

The operator markets 103 km of piste, 35 pistes and 24 lifts, with 11 km easy, 84 km intermediate and 8 km difficult. Our measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds one connected sector of 67.4 km, so the western sector at Bad Kleinkirchheim and the eastern sector at St. Oswald are linked and nothing marketed is detached. The 103 km is the figure used for comparison; the lower one is ours.124

Is Bad Kleinkirchheim good for beginners?

Only partly. The area has four practice slopes, a ski kindergarten from age 3 and a day ticket for the valley practice lifts, but just 11 of the 103 marketed km are easy, and our measurement finds only 24% of the network reachable without descending something harder than an easy piste. Beginners who progress find mostly red pistes.11524

How much is a day ticket in Bad Kleinkirchheim?

For winter 2026/27 an adult day ticket from 09:00 to 16:00 costs EUR 73, a youth (born 2008 to 2011) EUR 55 and a child (born 2012 to 2020) EUR 36.50. Seniors born 1961 or earlier pay EUR 66, and tickets are valid from 4 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, according to the operator.7

When does the Bad Kleinkirchheim ski season start and end?

The operator plans to open on 4 December 2026 and to run to 29 March 2027, with lifts opening in stages. The St. Oswald side opens first, on 4 December, the Nockalm and ridge lifts follow on 11 December, and the Kaiserburg, Maibrunn and Sonnwiesen lifts in the village open on 18 December. All dates depend on snow and weather.715

How do you get from Bad Kleinkirchheim village to St. Oswald?

On skis the route runs through the two slow Sonnwiesen chairs, and a February 2023 SkiForum.pl visitor needed 1.5 to 2 hours for it.
